Man Sentenced for Killing Toddler Over Broken Xbox

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A man who killed his 17 month-old daughter in a rage over a broken Xbox has been sentenced to more than 20 years in prison.

Philadelphia prosecutors say 27 year-old Tyrone Spellman killed Alayiah Turman in September 2006 with at least five blows to the head when she pulled down his Xbox console. The force of the blows cracked the toddler's skull.

Spellman was convicted in January of third-degree murder and child endangerment. He was sentenced Thursday, March 13, 2008, to the maximum 22½ to 45 years in prison.

Spellman confessed to police but defense lawyer Bobby Hoof says the statement was coerced and that he was just trying to protect the child's mother.

But at Thursday's hearing, Spellman expressed remorse.

The couple's other child, born after the killing, is in city custody.

God that sad....If I lost either of my two kids, well I just don't know what I would do. It sad because he though his games were more important than his kids. I would sell all my gamesystems in a heart beat if I needed to help my kids.

Gaming addiction is becoming more of a problem for some people :? so it's only natural the media will cover crimes related to it.

But then again, alcohol addiction and alcohol-related crimes are much greater problems.

Yeah because there haven't been cases where a kid has been beaten or killed over wrecking daddies car. This doesn't happen just because of gaming. Its more so a mental disease that people do this then it is being "to serious" about something.

Seriously, we should have much stricter punishment. Killing a 17 month old kid? Over a broken game system? This sort of thing should inquire the death penalty. He just deprived a child of their life. Their LIFE. He is unable to ever brig that back. The child has no opportunity to live. He's had 27 years. And what does he do with it? He just killed his daughter. Seriously, this man deserves the death penalty in my eyes.

How anyone can actually try to make a defense on this is absurd. To claim that he was protecting the child's mother is beyond absurd and probably fits somewhere in the realm of bat $(#@ crazy...
