Seems many new titles of this gen are not sticking or having major impact- low sales, poor review scores, easily forgettable, etc.

Driveclub, The Order: 1886, Ryse Son of Rome, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, No Mans Sky, Recore, Devil's Third, The Division all come to mind.

Some have sequels, like Knack, Watch Dogs, and Titanfall, but still these games werent critically acclaimed or making a huge impact....they are no Gears of War, Uncharted, or Mass Effect.

What is going on with new IPs? Or are we just too high standard in the gaming industry? At least Watch Dogs 2 and Titanfall 2 were better than their predecessors.

I agree, everything has been released to lackluster fare. Splatoon is probably the only one that was able to deliver on its hype and sell millions upon millions.

Everything else that has done well was pretty much a guaranteed sell anyways. Call of Duty, Battlefield, Uncharted, Halo, Gears of War, etc.

There are more new IPs coming such as Horizon and For Honor next month. I'm looking forward to both.

Me too, but don't expect huge sales numbers because gamers are institutionalized to want samey sequels. They are always crying for new and original content, but when it comes down to it, they only buy what's familiar, like remasters for instance.

Well not only new IPs flopped, many established IPs flopped as well. This gen is pretty bad IMO. I just realized that the other day when someone asked me which current gen console he should buy. I really couldn't give him an definitive answer.

Knack was basicly a tech demo. The Order 1886 needed more content, Ryse is niche, Recore had too many issue, No Mans Sky needed more content, Sunset Overdrive would have solld on Playstation, The Division was disappointing, Watchdogs another disappointment , Titanfall 2 released at a horrible time . Many of these games were short of success or niche. Some had great ideas but executed poory. Ubisoft games are always disapointing and and never come close to the gameplay trailers.

Notice many of the games I listed above made silly mistakes especially Titanfall 2. The Order 1886 would easily be successful with more content. These developers fall short in one silly way another.. It's ridiculous.

Far as Ubisoft let's not get into their issues. lol I could write a book on that company.

Knack, The Order, Ryse: all garbage so it's no wonder they didn't sell. Liking that shit is setting some really low new standards.

Same with movie industry... its all about risk. Why risk wasting money on a new project when they know they can guarantee sales by using established brands. We really have no one to blame but ourselves... we seek comfort in brands we trust, and are quick to be critical on anything new.

Yeah. AAA releases have been pretty meh. Seems like they've been going down hill for a while. As the market grows these larger publishers want to appeal to everyone which usually ends up making for a bland game that does nothing new. Not to mention the trend of selling unfinished games.

People seem to forget that No Man's Sky sold extremely well. And I enjoy it quite a bit. It also did alright with some critics. Even made a best of 2016 list or two. The scandals don't change that.

Knack has a few issues but I wouldn't say it's a bad game. From what I noticed the main character is unappealing and it needede more content. Knack 2 actually looked pretty fun though. The Order 1886 could easily be GOTY with MP and more single player contenti, t's far from trash. Ryse is niche but it's not a bad game at all. lol

Ive enjoyed the games listed more than the established multiplats. I can only speak for the xbox one games. Quantum Break was short and sweet but playing with the time powers was a lot of fun. Sunset Overdrive was really good and i still play it occassionally because its co-op mode Chaos Squad is a lot of fun and action packed when you get to show off your lvl'd up weapons n amps. Ryse was decent but the hack n slash was so visceral and an occasional romp in the arena co-op is a blast. The Division was okay and good for the co-op.

With the titles listed in your thread, i think there good for one off series so id like more new ip one offs in the future. I would however like to see Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, The Order(didnt play but looked like a sequel with more content/game modes would be nice) and QB get another game.

The issue is AAA games have mostly become just like blockbuster movies. All flash no substance.

I dont know about you but I don't even goto most blockbuster movies anymore I just wait for them to come on cable because they arent worth the price of admission.

The reason the trend continues is because every so often a decent one comes along so it justifies the practice.

You have to blame gamers too. People here complain about DLC and preorders, but the reality is it's mostly only games they don't like. When it's games they do like they are preordering the $99 ultimate edition. Hypocrisy.

Almost sure it was highly successful. The player base dropped by 90% on PC within a month but what did you expect from a Ubisoft game on PC? It's very popular on consoles.

@Juub1990: Was called Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars.

"The game is played by one or more players, locally or online, using their car to hit a soccer ball, which is much larger than the cars themselves, into the opposing goal."

Changing your game from a shatty name does miracles sometimes.

Don't know how you should judge this game. Ubisoft intended it to have a long life span and as things stands, it doesn't look like it will. Initial sales have been very good and it broke most of Ubisoft other records set by heavy hitters like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry. I regularly play at my friend's house on Xbox and I find players rather quickly. Same thing on PS4. Even on PC I'm surprised how quick it is to find players. Got no idea about online figures so I can only go by reported numbers which are very good.

Some of these new IPs turned out to be horrible which is sad. Back then we use to always have new IPs that would become awesome and turned into a series and yet this gen not so much.

No. I mean a genre defining masterpiece that does something new, transcends just videogaming and truly becomes something special in the hearts and minds of gamers.

Its not something you can comprehend clearly.

yeah. it does nothing new. just another cover based shooter.

and also space setting has been done many times before

With the exception of Sunset Overdrive n Titanfall, the other new ips aren't good games for starters in most cases, and overly safe. Sunset n Titanfall aren't the most inventive ideas, but they also have enough going for them to at least stick out. Titanfall 2 got the raw end of the deal on the release date, and Sunset happens to be an Xbox 1 exclusive. So bummer city there.

The triple A space in general has been overly dull. A few exceptional outings, sure, but its been creatively boring. No one has really took any major risks with their games.

Sunset Overdrive is a good game, it's problem is that it is an Xbox One exclusive, and it didn't sell well because I guess the user base for the One just aren't into those types of games.

I'd love to play it, maybe it'll be on PC soon.

too many people only care about the COD, BF, GTA, Sports, etc. too many established franchises and so many games that new IPs aren't a big draw like they used to. On top of that the "fanboy exclusive" wars where one side of fans trashes a new IP just because it isn't on their system. Not to mention the quality of most of the games you listed were average to below average. The only 3 games from that list that were above average are titanfall (but 2 sucks) SO and QB. Some of them sold well despite being turds like watch dogs (ok wasn't a turd but was just decent), NMS, and The Division.

Because new IP needs some time before they started making money.

It's like these publishers throw untested games in front of the sharks and expect them to sell like the first AC/Gears of War, or long lasting series... It's just a wrong mindset and I wish publishers hade more fate in games and IP that didn't start racking in millions day one.
