So, when graphics arguments come up, I always ALWAYS see the argument "Nuh uh, Mario Galaxy has better graphics than Crysis because Crysis is boring realism while Mario Galaxy is artistic."

But here's the thing, Mario Galaxy's graphics aren't much better than Mario Sunshines. In fact, in these shots, I can't really say that either is better, just different settings.

Mario Sunshine was a LAST GEN game. And thus, Mario Galaxy has last gen graphics.

In conclusion, if Mario Galaxy was on the PS3 or 360 or PC, it'd be better. The Wii really needed higher resolution, and it sucks that the hardware is so bad.

Screenshots do not tell the whole picture. PLlaying Sunshine, then Galaxy and you'll see the difference. Better textures, lighting and backgrounds, at least to my eye. But I'm not obsessed with "teh graphix".

Uh, Mario Galaxy is MUCH better looking, you'd have to be insane to think otherwise. The only thing i've noticed though, is that Sunshine has better water effects. And not to sound like a typical sheep(which i'm not btw) but graphics don't make a game.

Honestly, i could barely tell the difference. People overuse the term 'artistic' a lot. The irony is that artistry encompases even realism itself. Crysis is artistic in realism. I just don't see why Okami is more artistic than Crysis. It's just artistic in a different aspect.

There is not a big upgrade in graphics between them. It is a shame that the Wii is so underpowered, but with the way the Wii has sold, I think Nintendo has found it's path to huge profits. Last Gen graphics in next gen box.

I am a huge fan of Nintendo games it is just a shame that they have to be on such an underpowered machine.

Jaggies are not the first thing people look at when it comes to comparison. It's the textures and detail. In that aspect, it's roughly the same. I never played sunshine before, and only played a bit of Galaxy. I had to pay quite a bit of attention to distinguish the two

I much prefer SMS over SMG but graphically its no contest. SMG is far superior to sunshine. And in all my years on SW i have never ever heard anyone say SMG looks better than Crysis. Not once. So i dont know whats going on there. Maybe you were fooled by a fakeboy? i remember there was a person saying the conduit looks better than crysis so its possible.

I'd still like to know how SMG would be improved on another system or PC. It works best with IR pointer, the gameplay wouldn't change, music the same quality. To me it's a great experience that would only improve with a little increased difficulty, not better lighting effects, frame rate or more detailed backgrounds.

guess you dont know what 'artistic' graphics means....

its not about jaggies or anything technical... they are just going by s t y l e

in your example, crysis is realistic looking, therefore one can say it really has no s t y l e

mario has a certain s t y l e

'artistic' graphics are mostly subjective

Not what I ment, I ment that I don't care about pixel count, jaggies, resolution because it doesn't make the game better or worse gameplay wise. Visually appealing? Sure but I can easily play any game and not worry about the graphics, I grow tired of all these comparison.

Your right SMS was ahead of its time when it came to graphics. The gap between the 2 games is distinguishable but not radical.

Honestly, you probably used some of the best Sunshine pics. And considering SMG still looks better, AND runs at 60fps, Sunshine has nothing on it.

It may not look that much better, but the game has a much larger scale to it. Like, when you go to fight Bowser and those meteor's rain down and deform the stairs you're climbing.. There's LOADS of them. SMG can get pretty hectic in places and the frame rate never drops. Never even stutters. It's locked 60fps. I remember Sunshine having frame rate problems occasionally... and that's with much less going on.

Played both. I liked Mario Sunshine more for the gameplay. I haven't played sunshine for a while, but besides Mario Galaxy being more "Shiny" I didn't think that Mario Sunshine is better. As for people saying that Mario Sunshine is better than Crysis, it happens in every freaking "Crysis is the man" thread. Maybe not in those exact words but the "artistic versus technical" argument always comes up, and Crysis vs Mario Galaxy always seems to be the comparison.

No, it definitely has a s tyle. But maybe it lacks character or personality. I don't know, I'm really not that familiar with it.

But if you told me a realistic game like Siren 2 or MGS3 had no s tyle, character, or personality I would tell you that was ridiculous.

I just don't understand why the games have such rough edges. That's all. I noticed this particularly in the Final Fantasy Crystal whatever game coming up for wii. Maybe it's not noticable in game, but ... it just seems strange to me.

Just focus on Mario in each of those pictures and you can see a significant difference the quality and detail of the character model, clothing, lighting etc.

other games 'can' but few rarely do, but we are specifically talking about crysis here

crysis just goes for straight realism... trying to make it look like a picture = very little to no s tyle

No, it definitely has a s tyle. But maybe it lacks character or personality. I don't know, I'm really not that familiar with it.

But if you told me a realistic game like Siren 2 or MGS3 had no s tyle, character, or personality I would tell you that was ridiculous.

mgs3 and siren 2 have a realistic 'look' in terms of design, but add s tyle with color filters (mgs) and grainy looking textures (siren)

I think the only considerable difference is on the lightning system:

spinecaton

I think the draw distance is also a huge difference.

and the textures.

and character models.
