Mario Kart 8 Deluxe had a very successful launch on the Switch, selling 459,000 units on launch day in the US, making it the fastest selling Mario Kart game ever.

And Jefferies equity analyst Atul Goyal believes the game’s success is more than just sales numbers, it shows the Switch as a viable console.

In a note to investors, Goyal advised them to buy Nintendo shares, and said about the success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe:

“No, this is not just any ordinary success. The scale of this success is many times bigger than what is visible with ‘MK8D sales of 459K units exceeded MKWii sales of 405K’. Analyzing the scale, we realize that like-for-like, MK8D is mega-hit on a different scale altogether (maybe 5-10x better).”

Analysts like Goyal did not expect Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to be a huge success on the Switch, mainly because it was already released on the Wii U. Goyal, among other Wall Street analysts, now believe that Nintendo’s shares will see a rise in 2017.

No Caption Provided

It is pretty crazy though. I knew it would do well, no shit, it's fucking Mario Kart lol.

But I had no idea it would be this much of a hit.

Do you understand people who are buying the Switch right now are buying it cognizant of its lineup as it stands? In other words, people who bought the Switch bought it knowing that MK8 and Zelda are the top games to play at the moment. It's not like they just bought the damn thing and are now looking for things to play, they knew what they were getting into for the first few months when they bought it.

In other words, the praise is not premature.

@charizard1605: Yes it is. For all anyone knows this will be another wii wiiu, aka dust collector. Until it proves otherwise it is nothing more. Its the same nintendo crap, Zelda tp was a gc game, released as a main game fore the wii. Its history repeating itself this just reminds me why I grew out of systemwars so many years ago. Delusional, irrational fanboys that are pointless to talk to.

Wait and see for once, blind praise is for fools

I love how the "They bought it because it's the only game!" argument seems to assume that all these people only own a Switch. Like there's this ocean of starved Switch-only gamers out there who couldn't be spending their money on other titles for other platforms.

Just one of the many holes in that kind of argument every time it comes up.

And of course in this case it's ignoring the fact that it's fucking Mario Kart.

Mario Kart 8 = Mario Kart 7 HD

These games never really change.

Switch will fizzle out somewhere around 5 million, and it will be tough to get it move higher.

Just wait.

I remember playing the "wait for ....." game with the Wii U and nothing moved that needle after a certain point.

Pro Tip: Wii U outsold the Wii at first, and it ended up selling around 90 million less in the long run.

Yeah, and those good games didn't move units.

Why is this all of a sudden going to change?

Tell me.

Keep locking my threads, you know that the Switch is going end up flopping no matter what. It'll fizzle out and die.

You probably think Splatoon 2 is going to push units.

Switch is a portable Wii U, nothing more.

It's laughable seeing you all giddy about Wii U ports, casual.

@brah4ever Switch demand is greater than Wii U's piss poor marketing, message is much clearer as the outside gamers thought the Wii U was just an extention or an extra accessory to the Wii. Nintendo put on a message that this is a new device with a new look and a different design that isn't a Wii like console.

So when they say "mega-hit on a different scale altogether" what they mean is "compared to the last Mario Kart." Doesn't really sound all that great once the context is back.

Thing about Mario Kart games is that they're in it for the long haul. They usually come out fairly early in a console's life cycle, and their ultimate sales #'s are limited or enhanced by how well the console does as a whole.

With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the Switch has a Kart game earlier than any previous console, home or handheld. And with the Switch doing very well, it has the potential to be among the biggest Mario Kart games of all time, provided there isn't a Mario Kart 9 any time soon.

No, because the article is saying it's doing well compared to Mario Kart Wii, by far the best selling Kart game of all time (36.95 million), which launched later in the Wii life cycle to boot. The context makes its sales more impressive, not less.

Mario Kart Wii became a bundle title, first with the racing wheel then with the entire console at the $150 price reduction. Next you're going to try to convince me Wii Sports is a big seller.

It's day 1 and expanded sales up to the point where it became a bundle are high for a mainline AAA game, I don't deny that, but it also sold not even half of it's lifetime sales by the time the 150 bundle was released. Also, when compared to many big titles, it's day 1 sales, and by extention the day 1 sales of 8D, were pretty much just decent. For comparison's sake. Halo 3 sold 2.5 million copies day 1, in America alone. Let's not get started on the last 2 GTA titles, or bring up CoDs. The game was a hit, but your everyday ordinary hit, nothing more.

It also didn't launch "later" in the Wii life cycle, it was launched not even a year and a half into the Wii's life, and then essentially launched again as the console reduced priced in 2011. Even if it did launch later in the life that wouldn't be a good argument for 8D. 8D is launching very early in the consoles life with a much smaller install base, multiplatform, with no bundled hardware, and with waaaay less competition in terms of other games on the platform. The situations for launch between these two titles are completely different.

I won't be holding my breath expecting 8 to even touch those kinds of lifetime sales unless it also becomes a bundle game.

Mario Kart 8 is absolutely not going to sell over 37 million units lol, that's crazy talk. That said, 15-20 million units lifetime should be easily within reach for it, that's what Mario Kart DS and 7 did too.

I say that it WILL outsell Mario Kart 7, the Switch attracts a bigger market than the 3DS did.

Yeah, I'm not saying it won't. I'm saying it won't outsell Mario Kart Wii, it took GTA5 being on five different platforms with three staggered releases to manage that.

Replay Double Dash some time lol. It was my favorite until 8, but it decidedly does not hold up well at all.

Yeah, Double Dash was my most played Mario Kart game by far.

But 8 is just better in every way.

Double Dash does that whole party game chaos thing fantastically. There is so much insanity in that game, it's incredible.

8 is on a whole another level though.

Nice. The Wii U version was pretty awesome initially and Nintendo made it more so with the new additions to the Switch version. Looking forward to playing it myself.

Just got my copy, not sure when I'll get around to it. Still deep into Breath of the Wild, haven't even shut it down since the first day I fired it up.

It's fantastic. So easy to pick up and play but very difficult to put down. The levels are gorgeous and there are so many of them.

Easily my favorite mario kart ever. So worth the price. And to be able to make it portable and play in both the living room and in bed, priceless. This game is so jam packed with content!

While I think the Switch is successful, I can't see how it will continue to be so. The meteoric initial sales are simply Nintendo fans who have always bought Nintendo consoles, just buying them faster and sooner and the people buying the Switch as their second console to PS4 or XO are not going to buy 3rd party games and leave competent multiplayer/friends/high fidelty behind to play on the Switch. The mobility advantage is also the curse. The console will never be powerful enough to have AAA multiplats. You'll get these indies like Snake Pass and Sports games that are lesser, and void of achievements. The scenario where the Switch has a high non-Nintendo attach rate simply is highly unlikely.

Mario Kart 8 selling well is not surprising but in no way should it be indicative of success.

Or Switch owners are just ready to buy another AAA game after Zelda. It might mean something, it might not. It's hard to say this early on because attach rate of early games tend to be very high, especially on systems which have little else to offer on AAA games.
