http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/mario-party-10-sales-outsold-by-psp-game-31823

The staying power of older systems in Japan sets it worlds apart from North America and Europe. While one is busy watching new-gen software outsell the older versions, Japan is going through the opposite situation. PS3 versions of games are consistently outselling PS4 versions, despite the situation going much the other way abroad. Even just this past week, Wii-U's Mario Party 10 was outsold by the PSP's latest Uta no Prince. I thought Mario Party was a lock for the top three.

Well, when you're right 52% of the time, you're wrong 48% of the time, right? Here's the software chart for March 9-15, according to Media Create.

1. (PS3) Yakuza 0 – 145,823
2. (PS4) Yakuza 0 – 90,506
3. (PSV) Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth – 76,760
4. (PSP) Uta noPrince-sama: All Star After Secret – 67,237
5. (WIU) Mario Party 10 – 50,212
6. (PS3) Dragon Quest Heroes – 33,448
7. (3DS) Assassination Classroom – 25,494
8. (3DS) The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D – 15,941
9. (PS4) Dragon Quest Heroes – 14,744
10. (PSV) Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 6 – 13,601
11. (3DS) Yo-Kai Watch 2: Shinuchi – 11,701
12. (3DS) Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire – 10,768
13. (PSV) God Eater 2 Rage Burst – 10,406
14. (PSV) Higurashi: When They Cry – 9,879
15. (3DS) Super Smash Bros. for 3DS – 6,965
16. (PS3) Winning Post 8 2015 – 6,943
17. (3DS) Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate – 6,100
18. (3DS) LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins – 5,993
19. (PSV) Winning Post 8 2015 – 5,933
20. (PSV) Samurai Warriors 4-II – 5,729

Those Yakuza sales are kinda so-so for the series, and the PS4 version didn't do much better than last year's PS4 launch title Yakuza Ishin. Digimon, on the other hand, enjoys the franchise's highest ever debut week. Higurashi got a PS3 version, but it failed to chart. And yeah, again for emphasis, there's a PSP game sitting in fourth place.

Here are the hardware sales:

PS4 – 33,826
Vita – 20,103
New 3DS LL – 19,668
PS3 – 7,221
New 3DS – 7,164
Wii U – 7,054
3DS – 2,666
3DS LL – 2,590
Vita TV – 688
Xbox One – 307

Unfortunately, PSP hardware is no longer tracked by Media Create, as the system went out of production. I have a feeling it outsold the Xbox One, though. Lord knows there's more demand and still enough stock sitting around.

The PS4 and Vita are showing a little bit of stability. Perhaps Sony's marathon approach is starting to pay off?

You know who's approach isn't paying off? Microsoft's.

-----------------------

Sony taking the reign in Japan. If only Vita was as popular in the US :(

There's like what, 40+ million PSPs vs 5 million Wii Us in Japan?

Vita outsold each 3DS SKU individually! #masterrace

@Blabadon: More like ~20 million (give or take a couple of million) PSPs vs 2.something million WiiUs. Not really a fair fight in any case :P

I'm actually fairly surprised at how the PS4 hasn't simply dropped off a cliff after DQH.

Mario Party 10 is meh.

1)Too short - only 5 maps and i finished a whole game with 2 hour

2)Too few mini games - really. I finished 1 map and never had to play any mini game. And even if you have to play mini game then it´s always same and mini game selection is too linear.

3)cart mechanic - why the hell???

4)Game is based on luck than skills. Yes, even mini games don´t need any skills. It´s all about random luck.

5)It has no online multiplayer - this means 99% game you have to play single-player since nobody dosent invite friend home everyday. You are not allowed play with friends online. year 2015 and it has no online. Its same if Battlefield 4 had no online.

And how long are the sales for that PSP title going to last? A week? Mario Party 10 will still be on shelves for a few years, and still sell regularly.

Mario Party 10 had every opportunity to revitalize the series with proper amiibo use, online multiplayer, and the new bowser gameplay element.

Instead they pooped the bed and made the most generic boring party game ever made. Way to go Nintendo.

Uh did you forget about the Xbox 360 in the U.S.? (And the PS3 in Greece)

@charizard1605: but the four 3DS SKUs combined are still less than the PS4's.

I was gonna pick this up but getting all the info. I'll wait for a price drop later on. No online was a big mistake. At this point, this should be the last Mario Party game if you ask me and I settle for a Mario Party Collection down the road with all Mario Party games in one disc.

The only country where Mario would be beaten by a boy-band dating sim for teenage girls... But at least Yakuza came out on top.

Mario Party with online multiplayer even with just friends would probably end terribly, rage quitting friends and unstable connections would kill any fun with it.

Exactly the answer to the question I was going to ask.

This whole lack of online multiplayer reminds me of when Galvatron said something to Starscream about a "bad comedy" way back in '86. Nintendo acts as if we are in the year 1997 when MP mainly consisted of four people sitting around a console in a bedroom or living room. People grow up yet still want to game and someone needs to forward the memo to NOA, NOJ, etc.., that we have the technology to play the same game with people from all over the world and the tech far exceeds what Nintendo is utilizing. Can you imagine of Nintendo Land had online MP?
