Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - surprise hit of 2017?

I had some time recently to play this game, and I find it to be really polished and oozing with charm. Not to mention that it's actually fun! I love turned based tactical games especially in the same vein of XCOM so this was right up my alley. It's definitely one of the biggest surprises of 2017 for me, SW. Have you had a chance to play it? Any other games you can think of that surprised you?

Yeah I’m only about 2 hours in but I’m really enjoying it. Never played a Rabbids game but I do love tactical turned based games so this is fun for me.

Mario + Rabbids is a fun game. Whoever likes those types of games should give the game a shot.

It is one of these games that people easily dismiss at first because of some questionable elements (e.g. Rabbids), but turn out to a good game upon further look. It is one of these Wind Waker momments.

I was considering making a thread a while back after I beat the game but I forgot to. But yeah, I completely agree. I mean, I don't think there really is many other games that came out this year - if any at all - that people initially cringed shouting "DO. NOT. WANT." to "GOTY Contender" in a single stroke. Mario+Rabbids did a rather unimaginable and that is getting gamers to actually look at Rabbids more seriously than the shovelwear they debuted on during the Wii era.

I'm personally not the biggest fan of strategy games, and it suffices it took me a moment to sink into this game - but when I realized how much I kept wanting to play it - I realized how much I was really loving it. It also has one of my favorite moments in any game this year that has a... Great Mighty Poo-esque influenced boss battle that turns into a Mario roast.

It was a lot of fun. I just have i think 1 or 2 more ultimate challenges left to 100% it.

you getting the DLC? or are you done?

It's pretty fun, but it didn't take me long to get quite bored with it. I'm 5 hours in or so and have no urge to go back. I'll probably force myself to play it some more, but it's my least favourite Switch game I own.

It's always like this with Ubisoft's games. I'll be extra wary of them in the future.

a very nice surprise indeed. i wasnt aware of it before E3 and when i saw the initial reveal i just thought "oh...its just a mario & sonic at the olympics type cheap cash in" and wrote it off. but it won me over the more i saw it at E3. it was also the tipping point for me to get a switch. i bought one when mario&rabbids launched (i also knew that odyssey and xenoblade were coming and decided to avoid any chance of a shortage).

on a completely unrelated note: i have had a switch for a month and have a few games for it. none of those are games from nintendo (mario&rabbids is ubisoft of course). i have yet to play a nintendo game on a nintendo gaming device...how odd is that? :P. anyway that ends on the 27th of course.

It was overall a great game, I would probably give it an 8. It was way too easy for me as a veteran in SRPGs. I really liked the world they created and even though I usually hate Rabbids, they were acceptable in the game. I love the love to Detail and how they implemented movement. It is however way to shallow for a SRPG, I would have loved it to be more in the region of Disgaea.

The 2nd world is by far the coolest. World 3 began to become boring until the boss of the 3rd world shows up which was fantastic. World 4 was so boring, I had to force myself through it. End boss was okay. Some of the challenges were pretty cool, especially those designed around moving and/or special abilities. Others were horrible (especially some of the escort challenges which took 10+ turns because Toad or the Rabbit with the headset had such a short movement range). After finishing the challenges in World 4 and finding every treasure I left the game. Didn't care about the ultra challenges after seeing the first one which was just filled with those explosive boxes and a lot of random enemies. Felt really lazy.

Eh i thought it would be good. I'm probably one of the only people that were keen on the collaboration when I heard about it.

Dont think it's the biggest surprise. Alot of out of nowhere surprises that came out.

Thought PUBG was gonna be an Early Access fad that wouldnt last once Lirik stopped streaming it. But it's the biggest game and the biggest surprise this year.

Surprise hit for sure.

But biggest? Nah Chicken Dinner is the biggest Surprise Hit by far. Becoming a phenomenon.

Totally hate that I missed getting it at launch. Now it's on the back burner because of Mario and then "take my money switch" November. But hopefully, I'll get it for Christmas.

PUBG probably takes it for Biggest surprise hit

Horizon Zero Dawn probably takes it for the most amount of surprised people and to the degree it shocked them.

It’s probably one of the big surprises of the year. Game is really fun and love the humor of the Rabbids as well. On world 4 right now. World 3 boss phantom was awesome. I would say PUBG is probably another big surprise as well though haven’t played it.

PUBG with X1X Kotor a close second. lol :P

That janky crash bandicoot remake is a surprise hit to me, since crash bandicoot games are trash and especially since the remake is also capped at 30fps on ps4, being its a platformer at that.

It's a good casual Nintendo game i guess. Calling it a surprise hit would be quite a stretch.

I'm not sure. I guess it depends on what the DLC has, but I haven't checked yet to see if there was any info on it.

Naaah. Might be cute and cool and all but we had other games far more surprising games where ended up being awesome for the average joe. Sonic Mania, Cuphead, even Resident Evil 7 was a surprise for horror fans , and few more if you ask me.. Game is up there though i guess, everyone says its great and all, from what ive seen not for me but still.

I go the game when it came out and on world 4. I had stop for a while and played Sonic Mania and Steamwolrd Dig 2 and now back to playing it.

What is surprised for a Zelda game to be great ? Nothing .. Same case with Mario odyssey, you know it will deliver with one way or another, being 10/10 or 9/10.

New IPs like PUBG, Horizon, Cuphead and many others for 2017 were suprising because noone could tell what are all about or if theyll deliver in the end etc.

To me clear winner for 2017 is PUBG by far then Sonic mania and Cuphead.

It was pretty fun in worlds 1 and 2. I'm in world 3 now and it feels like this is as deep as the combat gets. I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm not wrong, the game isn't worth $79.99 CDN to me.
