I am quite sure Sony's marketing people are hard at work planning the early stages of Move. Some of them might even read this forum often to gauge gamers' perception of motion control. If any of you marketing people are reading this, call your peers to stop everything! Read what I have to say first.
You see, Microsoft has been spending enormous sums of money to market Kinect. Celebrities like Steven Spielberg came on E3 stage to promote Kinect. Every Xbox Slim commercial promotes it as being Kinect ready. Some Macy stores offer anyone a chance to try Kinect. Basically, Microsoft is trying to pre-empt Move's launch by implanting Kinect into the minds of as many people as possible. At this point in time, there is no doubt that Kinect is a more hyped product. So, with this in mind, how can Sony market Move so that Move will come out the victor?
First and foremost, Sony needs to dictate the public's perception of motion control. What should Motion control do for gamers? It is not about precision. It is not about the price. It is not about the milliseconds of lag. It is about the fun, the experience, the overall enjoyment--the more the better. And so, here is my recommendation for the Sony marketing department:
1) Create a slogan: Playstation Move, More Is Better! (The exclamation point is substituted with an upside down Move controller).
We all know how brilliant the It-Only-Does-Everything campaign was. It steers the public's perception to Sony's advantage--the value and versatility of the PS3. My recommended slogan for Move shares the same theme. It encourages the public to think about motion control in terms of what the user can experience, the more the better. So, when displaying Move in stores like Gamestop, Best-Buy, etc., the slogan More is Better! should be the biggest words gamers see when they look at pictures of Move.
2) Make a clear case why More Is Better! You do that by creating the following banners below the slogan:
a) More Types of Games: Move controllers can be used for camera-based games, party games, sports, strategies, shooters, fighting, adventure games, casual games, hardcore games, etc. (This highlights Kinect and Wii's weaknesses)
b) More types of graphics: HD graphics and 3D graphics (This highlights Kinect and Wii's weaknesses)
c) More hours of playtime: Move doesn't require constant, tiring body motions to control the game. You can therefore play hours and hours without getting tired. (This highlights Kinect's weaknesses)
d) More playing positions: Sitting, lying down, standing up, hands completely separate from each other, etc. (This highlights Kinect and Wii's weaknesses. We know Kinnect current have some issues with sitting and lying down. The Wii, because the nunchuck is connected to the Wiimote with a wire, both hands are somewhat tired up to each other)
e) More fun: Because of a, b, c, and d above, Move is simply more fun!
The slogan, PLAYSTATION MOVE: MORE IS BETTER! and the 5 supporting banners will make it hard for Microsoft to market Kinect in a way that harms Move's image. It is a slogan that kills two birds with one stone, highlighting Move's strengths while pointing out the competitions' weaknesses.
Should Sony follow my advice, there is no doubt that Move will be more successful than Kinect and position Move for long term profitability.
