Mass Effect 2 is the Game of the Year. Heres why...

Experience- The game is an incredible hybrid of action/rpg and delivers heart pounding moment after moment mixed with true emotional experieces between player and NPC's. The very scope of the game pulling so much litterally from the game before it (ME1) to add so much in this game is a stroke of genius that was executed with presicion. The story, the relience of characters on succeeding and failing, the bond between you form with them... there is nothing, notta, nope, that compares to what this game put in the players hands over the past 365 days... maybe ever.

Upgrades- Massive improvements in most every way over its predecessor. from DLC to game play mechanics. (not that this is a determining factor in Game of the Year) but it does show an over all dedication to listening to the fans and critics and getting it right. Mass Effect got it right in most every way, Mass Effect 2 was even better. While there were few who yearned for more rpg elements in the game, the overall gameplay experience was that of a perfect hybrid of outstanding action and rpg that few games will ever tread to this level.

Longevity- Its been out almost an entire year and people are still praising the brilliance of this game as compared to what comes out every tuesday. its the 2010 industry standard of awesome....

Competition- I wont stoop to bag on a game that is up for game of the year... I'll just be honest from my own perspective and my experience with the game.

Super Mario Galaxy- played it and enjoyed it... my issue with it being GOTY is i got a very big SMG1.5 feeling from it. THAT ISNT A BAD THING, just not what id expect to be GOTY. also, (people are gonna hate me for saying this) I feel like the 10 was a lifetime achievment award...

God of War 3- Played it and enjoyed it... kinda. The big moments were great, the in between were run of the mill for me. let me put it to you this way. where Mass Effect 2 raised the bar on the franchise, God of War 3 did not on its own. can we agree? great game, not GOTY.

Red Dead Redemption- Honestly this game is friggin amazing. I loved every minute of it and in all honesty i feel like in a way it saved rockstar to my perception. (I hated GTA4) compelling characters, great story, cool new universe to roam. I really enjoyed this game and wont cry in my pillow if it wins GOTY. My only issue when comparing it to ME2 is that it is more of a meat and potatos type of game where ME2 has an elegance about it that raises it higher for me. ME2 feels like the more "blood sweat and tears" type of game that the devs insisted on everything being perfect before release. the WOW experience from cover to cover... that is my opinion and i know some will share and some wont.

Bottom line... Mass Effect 2 is GOTY. please discuss and do so in an intelligent way... snappy one liners will be disreguarded. Thanks.

Actually had you read the entire post and not read the title and posted a snappy one liner you wouldve seen that this thread is very relevant to system wars as I have included other games that will undoubtadly be up for the award and asked for discussion in comparing this game to the competition. I guess being super fast at the "second post snappy one liner" is more important.

Was the first level supposed to a "heart pounding moment?" because it definitely was not for me.

I'll tell you in a week if it's my GOTY, if i ever decide to play it again.

I found the tale of RDR as well as the gun play to be much more satisfying. The whole fact that Marsten is a bad ass ex criminal "helping" people who are supposed to be "better" then him, but are actually just a different color **** stain is by far my favorite game story in quite some time.

Says volumes for me since i'm much more of a sci fi guy then an old westeren type. I also like the refined GTA style multiplayer with the free roam/standard options. For me RDR is GOTY. Period.

ME2 while a great game for sure played like an above average 3PS with a dialog tree full of b/w options all leading to almost the same exact conclusion. Also didn't help that ME1 had a much better story/pacing even if the gameplay was a little worse. I really couldn't have cared less about most of ME2 characters, and the T-800 at the end was such a stupid move I can't believe Bioware green lit that. Might as well had it say "Come with me if you want to live....."

New Vegas has ten times the more variables ME2 has. Not everything can be polished. Besides the game has been patched up by now. On the PC version, i didn't experience much bugs even without the patches, besides an occasional crash. And i seem to remember being stuck in the air floating for about five times during my ME2 playtrough.

OK. I have to put this out. SHUT UP. Sorry i just had to get it out of my system. But see, your "opinion" isnt the final word. And i just hate how you did not include Starcraft 2. I agree with you on that mass effect 2 was a fun and enjoyable game, but no, it is not MY GOTY. After i finished the game, i had no use of playing it again. So im not trying to be mean, but not everyone agrees that mass effect 2 is goty.

I just got the sense that he had no connection to the first game when he said the opening of ME2 did nothing for him. the opening was incredible if you had any connection to the first game. as for FNV... Its in my top 3 of the year. Im 70 hours in on my first playthrough, playing hardcore mode and I love it. the 7.5 score was a joke. its a 9+

Dragon Quest 9 was definitely an epic RPG, and all those group events with the game, sharing maps, etc. were epic too. DQ9 definitely deserves some special recognition itself, and GOTY would be perfect, especially since it's my personal GOTY. It would be a joy to see it nominated, and even more so if it wins.

But I have a feeling many people don't think handhelds games are worthy of that title for some reason. They seem to think the graphics are inferior, and hence the games are inferior and unworthy of being included. That's the impression I get anyway. And that's a real shame because they're missing out on so many great games. But I know, it needs more than just great gameplay. It needs "the graphics."

Oh well, just my personal pick.

Yes, andI own them all bar Civ V. I shall repeat for those who may have overlooked it.

SC2 - Meh, Pretty version of SC1.

RDR - Snooze-fest

FNV - Pretty damn good. Pretty damn glitchy.Pretty damn inconsistent.

God Of War - Rubbish. Simple.

Bayonetta - Makes God Of War rubbish.

I could go one, but i'm sure you're bored of my opinion.

See above post... 70 hours into FNV. It is a better rpg and is in my top 3 of the year. Mass Effect 2 is a better game. period. just because a game is MORE rpg it doesnt make it king. there are many other elements at work. dont you think its a little closed minded to just base a game on its rpg elements? I enjoy the hardcore mode in FNV but it doesnt make it great... in fact sometimes it annoys me.

[QUOTE="TheEroica"][QUOTE="GeneralShowzer"][QUOTE="TheEroica"] I just got the sense that he had no connection to the first game when he said the opening of ME2 did nothing for him. the opening was incredible if you had any connection to the first game. as for FNV... Its in my top 3 of the year. Im 70 hours in on my first playthrough, playing hardcore mode and I love it. the 7.5 score was a joke. its a 9+

It wasn't that incredible. Besides they brought him back in like five seconds. What was the point in the beginning, there was no point. Just an excuse to separate you from the characters from the first game.

watching the normandy getting ripped apart and everything you know getting thrown into such shambles isnt exciting? you talk like you were around for the crucifixion of jesus and nothing else compares. jeeze. actually, please enlighten me with a more viceral moment for 2010's crop of games.

I have to think about it, really. But what comes to mind is... Every boss fight in GOW III.

[QUOTE="GeneralShowzer"][QUOTE="TheEroica"][QUOTE="badtaker"] playing first game would confirm that ME2 has meh RPG elements. Play NV which RPG elements are much improved over Fallout 3 not dumbed down compared to ME1

I enjoy the hardcore mode in FNV but it doesnt make it great... in fact sometimes it annoys me.

and that is why i love fallout games... but it doesnt make it a better game. I banged 4 people on the normandy. that was pretty cool too.

Was the first level supposed to a "heart pounding moment?" because it definitely was not for me.

I'll tell you in a week if it's my GOTY, if i ever decide to play it again.

TheEroica

um... i get a feeling you never played the first game. i really hope you dont give up on this game. sad.

i played it. Never beat it. The Mako sections made the game unbearable. I played a good amount too, i think the last achievement i got was the specter status.

I agree with u even though I haven't played ME2. What I mean is that I also want games to go in the direction of better story telling and less stereotype characters that u may actually grow to care about. I really enjoyed RDR in that sense. I guess I'm getting old :)! I do think it would be a bit sad if SMG2 was awarded GOTY, because that would signify that the industry hasn't evolved, which is totally unfair. Not that these awards carry that much weight, but still.

That's nice. Here's why it shouldn't be GOTY:

  • It streamlines the gameplay to an unnecessary degree. The removal of driving around planets with the Mako and replacing it with planet scanning makes Mass Effect 2 kind of lack in terms of expansiveness, which is unfortunate for a game with such a fantastic universe. It was far from perfect, but it's something BioWare should have improved on instead of removed. It also unnecessarily weakens the impact of your dialogue choices and or actions. The paragon/renegade interruption system they added in was great, but it could have been used towards more impactful actions.
  • The side quests are lame. There's really no way to spin this one. They're no more than simple objectives that despite being varied, aren't engaging in the slightest.
  • The lack of a climb option with your weapon holstered is just confusing. It's always odd to take out your weapon just so you can climb over an object. (This is nitpicking, but still)

I mean the game is great and all (I wouldn't have finished it four times if otherwise), but after the initial impression, you slowly but surely start to see some very noticable cracks.

You talking about the distuction of the normandy or the first missions? Beccause it's clear the tc is refuring to the fall of Normandy.

I agree with you on the Mako point. I really missed that. otherwise, i preferred the streamlining. The side quests are AMAZING. Cmon. It's not about the gameplay, its about the back story. I loved each one of them Umm, what?? don't you like climb up from cover? ME2 is my GOTY. It has absolutely no compretition in any department.
