"As most of you know by now, this evening an accidental leak occurred of some early Mass Effect 3 beta code. Microsoft has advised us that through human error at their end, content which was meant for internal beta testing was flagged incorrectly and released to individuals who had signed up for the beta of the Xbox Live dashboard update. It has since been taken down and deactivated.

We'd like to stress that the leaked code is in a rough, unfinished state and was not meant for public release. The content is not final, and is not reflective of the quality of the finished, polished game due for release on March 6, 2012 (March 9 in Europe).

One feature that was present in this early build is a set of game play modes that are in development. In the beta code they are referred to as "action mode", "story mode" and "RPG mode". We want to stress that these features are still in the early stages of development and will receive considerable iteration and refinement. These modes are designed to give players an even finer degree of control over their game experience than ever before. Whether it be someone who finds the combat difficult but wants to experience the amazing story, someone who wants to focus on the action and combat game play, or fans who want the rich, story-driven RPG Mass Effect experience they've come to love - Mass Effect 3 will support all of these options. We'll have more info in the days ahead!"

sounds awesome. Im going to try all modes once the game is out.

So...

They've essentially found a way to rip out all of the RPG elements left in the game for those that want straight up gunplay? And some people still call this an RPG. :P

That wouldn't be too difficulty if ME2 was any indication. Although I think this move maybe for the best. That way they can cater to everyone's playstyle and hopefully end up making a product with everyone in mind.

Is story mode, by chance, a showing of key cutscenes so I don't actually have to play the game? That's really what I've been looking for. :P

We also end up with a game that doesn't have much of a genre. How will people know what genre to list it under? :P

  • The leak reveals a number of new gameplay mode options including an 'Action Mode' that places a heavy focus on combat and keeps all things related to story to a minimum by automatically replying for the player during conversations.
  • A 'Story Mode' reduces the difficulty of combat while
  • an 'RPG Mode' gives players the best of both worlds through manually-selectable replies and normal combat difficulty

Story Mode = Lower combat difficulty.

So I assume RPG mode is the actual game in its entirety while action mode is just pew pew lasers and automatic dialog. Does that mean that story mode sets the action sequences to super easy mode or just skips them entirely to let you just watch cutscenes and make choices? Honestly I'd probably pick story mode if the combat is still as bad as the first two's.

Riveting tale, chap! Different strokes for different folks, don't forget. Many people like the Mass Effect series, though you don't. And both sides have their own reasons.

What the... then Action Mode is definitely not for me. Hope RPG Mode is similar to what the earlier two games were like, cause Story Mode sounds like the "fast forward button" that was discussed in a thread earlier. :?

Sounds abit wierd to me having to pick from those options... I just want a normal campaign like the first 2 games. I guess it would probably be out of RPG or Story for me.

That would be RPG mode. Story mode just lowers the difficulty for combat, still not sure if it automatically replies for conversations.

Letting people choose to skip a massive part of the game (The story and choices) Seriously? BioWare how insane do you have to be to let people optionally skip such a massive part of the game?

That's actually a brilliant idea, and if executed properly Bioware could revolutionize gaming. Imagine if a game was able to cater to different types of people simultaniously like that :o

This is coming from a non-Mass Effect fan, btw.

I agree, if it's done right, games can be treated as movies (optionally), could bring more people into gaming, maybe if a story only mode was for sale, for like 10-15$, like a movie ticket, then you could just chose to buy the whole game (would probably have to scale down with sales...)

« mass effect fan.

Hold on. This isn't anything new. What about Deus Ex 1 all those years ago? The difference was that they didn't simplify it down to a menu or take things out. They let the player in the game think for themselves and adapt to their own styIe while playing. You don't have to watch all the cutscenes. You can apply all your skill points to weapons, making it an "action mode", stealth or whatever.

even on RPG mode. its not RPG. if mass effect 3 count as RPG. why not uncharted 3?

Uhh, does UC3 have Any stats, Any leveling, Any progression(items)? Not sure how much of the story you actually have a choice in, but does it have a dialogue wheel of some type? (I've not played the UC series)

The ME series may not be some sort of 'hardcore' RPG, but it's not That shallow where it should be completely re-classified as a non-rpg, like a pure TPS.

It falls under the genre the player chooses it to be. Disregarding quality of particular parts of the game, since it's not out yet, my guess is:

Action Mode - Third Person Shooter; only important cutscences and no conversation choices, or only majo choices.

RPG Mode - Same as the previous ME games.

Story Mode - Visual Novel? Movie? I'm curious if this mode will attract a completely new crowd to gaming.

so forza 4 has stats, leveling. progression. if its not RPG then what is it?

It is in no way designed to have a role you're playing as specifically (you're just race driver 053e), when you play ME, you're Commander Shepard, when you're in UC (I assume) you're Nathan Drake. But, UC doesn't fulfill the other requirements.

Just so people know, the definition of a role-play game is: "A role-playing game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting, or through a process of structured decision-making or character development." Assuming roles of characters in a fictional setting? Check. You assume the role of Commander Shepard. Take responsibility for acting out... through a process of structured decision-making? Check. You make plenty of story-related decisions in the course of ME games, and the story is narrated. Mass Effect is a RPG.

What do you mean by a movie exactly? There still has to be some semblance of a game remaining. The point I'm making is that Deus Ex 1 makes all your options, stealth, shooting, focusing on the story by looking for details etc, all seamless in the world. You adapt as you like rather than pressing a button on a menu.

Hm... actually, that's quite possible too. I do remember reading descriptions like "people who have experience with RPG" for Normal, and "people who only want to enjoy the story" for Casual in ME2.

Wow you really wish people would dislike the game as much as you do don't you? The shooting is fine and yeah the RPG elements aren't the deepest but it has one of the best stories this generation.

What I mean andhow I'd execute this:

Make options for a story only mode, settings being |paragon, neutral, renegade| gender | love-interest.| Then strip All the gameplay (sounds crazy, but it's just for one mode) and it would just play itself as a movie, have to do some combat scenes, as cinematics to bridge the story and never switch to the dialogue selection wheel, it would just be done by the developer.

Or, strip all the gameplay and leave the dialogue wheel in, and just have it otherwise like that.

I think it could cause people to, who aren't gamers, if they were to'watch'this, maybe think "wouldn't it be fun to control this ::restarts game, and'assumingcontrol'...:: Then bam, non-gamer becomes Gamer, Success!

Also, what you're talking about in Dues Ex, not really relevant... The settings aren't there to remove your potential choices, they're to change the game completely. So people who aren't interested in gameplay(weirdos) can just play(or watch) the story, and people who aren't interested in the story(weirdos) can just play it as a pure game.

[QUOTE="SNIPER4321"][QUOTE="AAllxxjjnn"][QUOTE="SNIPER4321"] even on RPG mode. its not RPG. if mass effect 3 count as RPG. why not uncharted 3?

I don't understand the problem? Why does it fitting neatly into some genre matter?

like i said its terrible action/shooter. with bad gunplay if i want to play shooter why i play mass effect. there are shooters out there. in the end its poor RPG and poor shooter

someone has been drinking some hardcore haterade.
