Reports are today reaching us (thanks to CVG) that Mass Effect is facing a ban in Singapore, the delicate sensibilities of the city state's sensors having apparently been offended by the game's depiction of lesbian love and sex.

Blog GameAxis report the ban, which means gamers in the city will miss out on one of the Xbox 360's most important RPG releases. If your character is female you still have the option of a short-lived bedroom fumble with a blue alien lady-friend, and such content has already earned the game a mild '12' rating in the UK.

That said, the likes of BioShock and GTA have previously been banned in Singapore, leading us to suspect that the local sensors take a decidedly grim view of any adult content.

More shortly.

I think its stupid to ban it but with the same breath, whats the point of that scene? The game would have been equally as good without the sex scene. It just feels to me like Bioware decided to use the sex card to get more ppl interested.

Sex is a natural part of life - it defines relationships and marks a transition to maturity. It's a central theme in books (Choke) and movies (Chasing Amy) - why should game developers have to shy away from sex in their stories?

[QUOTE="Jenova_Flare"]Lol. That is pathetic.Chutebox

Why?

As someone above has already stated, sex is a part of maturity and adulthood. Banning games due to sex is ridiculous if they carry the supposedly necessary ratings. Sex shouldn't be demonised it should be celebrated.

If it has been banned for being a same sex relationship then not only is that pathetic but homophobic and wrong.

I agree to a certain extent, but it doesn't make sex any less natural in their culture. They are human after all.

Oh, I know that. But I'm sure you understand, places are just much, much more conservative than others. That's why I don't find it silly. I for one don't want sex in games or movies. I know I'm the minoriy here, but I know what sex looks like and I don't care to see others doing it.

I mean fad as in homosexuality...kind of. I know there are plenty homosexuals out there that are legit. But there is a sudden increase in them all of a sudden, mostly female that I can see. It's like the cool thing to do. Just people trying to gain attention because they know they will get it.

Actually animals do it too.

But anyway, I found that sad but not so surprising, luckily it hasn't been censored elsewhere like The Witcher.

Are you referring to the certain type of monkeys that do nothing but have sex with anything that moves? I can't remember their name, but it's really funny to watch.

im not saying that they should shy away...and i cant guarantee this till i play the game, but im almost certain that if they had just had the two characters go into bed together without being so suggestive it would have had the same effect. I mean we dont need to see the Sims having sex on top of the bed to know its happening. Think of mafia, the sex scene in that game. It got the point through without having to go far. Im not against sex and nudity in media but i think it should be used for artistic purposes unless its porn. In movies u can have sex to show intimacy between characters through emotions, subtle actions tone and music. And as much as i would luv to believe thats what ME was trying to achieve, it didnt come through very well. It just feels like the sex was there to make it controversial.

Well I haven't heard of those. :P But there are many other animals too which do it I think, something like sheeps, birds etc. I remember hearing about gay penguins in a zoo or something, not that it means anything in relation to the topic.

I really don't thin theres many people that would sleep with the people of the same gender if they wern't attracted to them just for attention. The reason you are seeing more gay people in todays world is because its not as scary coming out as it was some years ago. However there are still people who are still scared to do so, so you will probably see more emerge as the years go on since it is getting better.

Going back to your attention point. I certainly wouldn't say coming out is the cool thing to do. There are people out there that think its wrong and will try and make your life as hard as possible, some to the point of cornering you by yourself and beating you up. So I really can't see too many pretending to be gay to get noticed.

Well, what I meant as a fad wasn't going as far as to sleeping with them. Girls making out with other girls is still an act of homosexuality. That's what I was referring to.

I watched the scene and it's really lame anyway. The girls are ugly and nothing really happens. This is just a PR ploy by Bioware. They know the X360 fanbase well I guess. I personally don't think it adds anything to the game anyway. We aren't playing a romance novel here. sheesh

Dont be ignorant. Homosexuality is not a fad. The 'increasing' numbers of homosexuals is a product of the media marketing homosexuality as a 'hip' thing. Because aparently being gay makes one more fashionably aware... Yeah... Sure it does... Whether or not there ARE actually MORE homosexuals these days is unimportant.

This parts for everyone:

Whether you like it or not, its occuring on a biological level. Call it unnatural if you will, but you cannot deny it if you believe in science. Im not talking evolutionary theory, Im talking accepted science. And whether you like it or not, it has its place in modern media. Because some people dont like homosexuality doesnt mean it should be banned or excluded from media (games in this case). There are markets that welcome it. Having someone censor a game based on content that they like is not only unfair but its F***KING INFURIATING. What right does ANYONE have to tell someone else what they can and cant watch.

Its pathetic. In this era, Rockstar can make games that include incredible levels of physical violence and yet the very thought of including proper sex scenes into video games is somehow seen to be inviting the Antichrist himself into our homes. God forbid the idea of even CONSIDERING putting homosexual content into games.

Also, I cant help but feel that if the scene in question here, was a scene involving 2 male characters this game would have been shot down in just about every western country. People who are inherently homophobic seem to not mind the idea of lesbians as much as gay males.

Ahhh but whats the point of complaining. Its not as if videogames will ever be a truly free medium in this lifetime...

You are referring to the Bonobo, which is THE most sexually active thing on the planet, with humans in a not-so-distant second place.

I hate to get into this, but I'll bite. What is natural about lesbians?

Edit: Please don't turn this into a huge discussion. Just curious.

Chutebox

You can't help who you find attractive, it is just part of you. Try and see it from their perspectives.

While I can agree with that, it still doesn't explain the natural part. You don't see animals doing it either.

Little Offtopic; but did you know that dolphins engage in orgies?

The majority of the population is apt to be aroused by seeing a sexual scene or act being commited, it's just human nature. Sex sells.

You are referring to the Bonobo, which is THE most sexually active thing on the planet, with humans in a not-so-distant second place.

Yea, that's the name lol.

[QUOTE="-Serpahim-"]I think its stupid to ban it but with the same breath, whats the point of that scene? The game would have been equally as good without the sex scene. It just feels to me like Bioware decided to use the sex card to get more ppl interested.lowe0
Sex is a natural part of life - it defines relationships and marks a transition to maturity. It's a central theme in books (Choke) and movies (Chasing Amy) - why should game developers have to shy away from sex in their stories?

Choke was a great book. Survivor and Fight Club were better though.

Apparantely, the sex scene has context within the plot of the game. So - it's not like it's gratuitous or anything.

It's not gratuitous at all. It's lame. I've seen it, trust me two ugly chicks and no action. And it really doesn't involve the plot of the game. There's a minute or two of dialogue first then a hug and a hand goes up in the air. End scene. Pretty boring.

This is especially funny because they have a nationally funded red light district.
