Ok, I don't own a Wii but I do know someone who does and I have played SMG for probably 6 hours and I've played Mass Effect for around 8 hours. Sure I haven't beaten either game, but it's quite enough to get the concept of both games and to make a decision on which is better. Now before I get into this, don't tell me I can't compare the two they are so different...well I just did, now you can either accept and read or get out. Someone might say that if you think one game is better than the other it is due to personal taste, and I agree with that but both of these games do a great job at attracting new people who haven't experience either genre. SMG did a great job for me a person who is really into shooters but when I played it, I felt that gaming had finally come back alive. Mass Effect might get people who are into JRPG or fast action games into the genre too. So it's a toss-up.
Story:
Lets get one thing clear...SMG's story is laughable. The beginning was so uninspiring and bogus, I almost thought it would take me out of the game. Now you may say that Mario games have always had crappy stories. Now I'm sorry but that's not excuse, I'm not going to excuse that, this was a really good chance of Nintendo to change that and they blew it. I swear I felt like I was playing Mario Party's storyline and though Bowser at one point is going to come and take my stars away. It just didn't fold very well and for the most part it seemed to be meaningless. Some levels or planets when playing, they were so off the story that I felt like I jumped from single player to multiplayer. Thank god though the planets were fun.
Mass Effect's story is obviously the better one. It's so amazing, my favorite all time game is Kotor and it was mostly due to its story, so I wasn't expecting to like Mass Effect more...wow what a surprise. The story is 5x better and more appealing. I couldn't believe how much I was into it. Can easily be turned into a great book or movie no doubt. Nothing beats it, it is the best story in a video game to date. The way the characters, cities, etc take into place...absolutely perfect.
Summary: Going to give the nod to Mass Effect, the story is just amazing and it's laughable that I'm comparing this to SMG's story.
Gameplay:
Now this is a hard one, very close contest. I loved Mass Effect's gameplay, I think it was done perfectly except that I can't help but feel that I've done it before. It is mostly due to the shooter aspect. I wasn't as nearly impressed as I was with SMG's gameplay. When playing SMG for the first time, I though wow I can't believe games can still be as fun as the used to be. SMG really did give me a fresh feeling towards games. It was so new, so fun. The puzzles, the gravity, the spherical design on the planets. So well-done. Going to have to give major props to Nintendo to be back and innovate the industry in the best possible way. Mass Effect while it was innovative too, it just didn't feel very new to me, maybe it's because I've been playing too many shooter games, I don't know. I guess gameplay will be personal taste this time because someone who is used to playing platformers may feel the exact opposite.
Summary: SMG's gameplay was just way too damn fun and had great lasting appeal to it. I went home wanting to play it more and more.
Sound:
Nope, sorry SMG fans. Didn't like it, I mean I guess I can understand Mario 64 fans liking the fact that they used a lot of the sound effect from Mario 64 but I don't. I loved Mario 64 but I feel that they might have been a bit lazy on this department. The sound effects are fine, but way too much alike sometimes. The audio in this game is also fine, but lol sometimes the music will get dramatic and I would think, what are they trying to do? Make a cartoony fun game dramatic? That just doesn't work for me. It would be like Dorra the Explorer being dramatized by College students, it just doesn't work. With that said, there isn't anything wrong with the sound in SMG, I just didn't like it.
Mass Effects sound was AMAZING! I love it, the weapon sounds, the powers, the voice-acting, the music. All top-notch. They really did try with this game, it's probably the best sound in a video game I've played. The audio is amazing, I can't explain it, you will just have to go watch a gameplay footage, but it really puts you in the mood that you are in this planet and you are in an epic battle. It really works great.
Summary: Sound goes to Mass Effect, I just didn't like what they did with SMG, maybe I didn't understand it.
Graphics:
Ok, so why would I be comparing a 360 game to a Wii game? Well at a technical standpoint, Mass Effect is obviously better, so I won't compare that. Going to compare the art-**** I think SMG does a really good job of making itself standout, the vibrant colors, the lively characters and animations. It feels like I am 8 again watching my favorite Saturday morning cartoon. Not only does it look good, but it also looks happy and fun. Anyone watching it would immediatly want to take a crack at it. I can't say the same about Mass Effect's art-**** Unlike SMG's, it doesn't standout very well. Don't get me wrong, it looks great in the technical aspect of it, but in the end it looks dull, boring, dead, what a shooter looks like, you name it. I am disappointed that they didn't try to make their game look apart from others, perhaps it can be due to the Unreal Engine 3(are they using that one I'm not sure).
Summary: Mass Effect looks better technically, but SMG looks better artistically and that my friends is enough to draw anyone to the game.
Overall/Replayability/Conclusion:
I probably can't say which one has better replay value since I haven't finished either but since you will be able to go back to the planets and collect things you haven't before, discover secrets, etc...I can say that they are probably both equal in this. Overall I think that both games are equal, to a technical standpoint, Mass Effect is the better game but to just plain out fun SMG is. I can't say which is better because they both have a place in my heart. But it is all up to you, I think the true winner is the person who owns both games. 360 fans may consider that Mass Effect is the best game of this gen, Wii fans may think SMG is the best, but in the end they are both right.
