A game that plays like a broken gears of war with animations so unrealistic and hialrious it looks like some frames are missing. I'm basing this more on ME3, how is this game enjoyable to others? I laughed in tears with the melee system in this game. Where is the effort to match the games outstanding story/enviroments? It seems the quality isn't there. IMO.

It's seem like a mess to me, originally playing differently and then taking more of an action route. Now with options to play more rolebased/action etc.

Thoughts?

To be fair gears of wars is just boring aim and shoot. At least ME has the biotics/classes going for it.

i am enjoying the combat more in this one than the second, but the combat in 1 was better i think, it seemed to suit the slower pace and less "wave based" action. the kinect voice commands help a little, you dont need to pause the action with the wheel much.

with the second i wanted the combat to be over quickly because i wasn't really enjoying it much, with this, its more exciting but i am into the end game and the onslaut is getting tiring, i just want to finish it now.

Gears 3 is still the best example of cover based third person shooting, its pretty faultless IMO. though Mass effect does everything else so much better.

oh and yeah, completely agree with the melee in this game, it TOTALLY sucks, i have missed about the same number of times as i have connected, it seems weird, it shouldn't be an insta-kill, but the fact that you can miss by miles does seem like it was half assed.

well said and thank you.

The animations are pretty bad, I'll give you that, but everything else works just fine. I like playing with the biotics and mixing various ammunition. You don't even have to shoot in ME3 if you don't want, I played a few rounds on co op with a player that only used Vanguard biotic powers and it was pretty bad ass.

I don't really think it's fair to compare the shooting/cover system to Gears anyway. Gears = Combat. And? If Mass Effect's budget went completely towards combat too it'd be a different story, but that isn't the primary focus. Probably the biggest, but there's a lot more that needed attention too.

Paper thin rpg mechanics and lackluster combat seems to plague every single game that is described as an action rpg. There are some exceptions, though ME like other action rpgs before it seems to get excused for having bad gunplay just because you can lvl your character.

Why does everyone hate on the combat in the first game? It is exactly the same as the other two. At least on PC. You take cover and shoot things. If you upgrade the weapon to not overheat, overheating is not a problem. Also, I think the combat is better because you have to level up weapons to be good with them. Its more of an RPG like that.

SW doesn't know the definition of hyperbole, thus it gets used so often.

The animations are indeed horrible. A step backwards from ME2. I don't really understand this, I mean, they showed they could do it (ME2 animations weren't great, but they were okay). In ME3 characters act like dolls with sticks up their bottoms.

Gameplay > Stats, or Stats > Gameplay. They never meld perfectly. And leveling weapons sucks, it's just tedious(in general) and specifically doesn't fit the story, Shep isn't a grunt who's never held a gun before.

And the gameplay is rather poor in ME1, it's clumsy and shallow. 'Least Me3 isn't clumsy... too bad BioWare can't do ai for beans.

Post it in the sticky.

freedomfreak

Stickies suck, 5 different conversations happening on top of one another, much better to have seperate coversations in different threads.

As for the topic bad animations =/= bad gameplay.

I'd take the third person combat in Mass Effect 3 over, well, pretty much every other TPS out there. Why? Well, the guns feel great to shoot, powers are much more useful this time around and lead to some really awesome moments when you combine powers from youself and both squadmates.

Different weapons within classes are very different from one another. Great enemy variety this time around. ME 2 kinda had boring combat (almost as boring as Gears of War), but I think they nailed it in ME 3.

I do truly hate how many functions were bound to the space key on PC (i'm sure they used a different button on consoles); ie. cover/roll/sprint/interact. Nothing like trying to roll or sprint away from a firefight you cant survive only to latch on to the wrong side of a wall and get killed.

Other than that, the combat is fantastic. I agree, the opening level is truly awful with how they cram the bad animations down your throat, but after that they are easily ignorable.

Inconsistancy

Gameplay > Stats, or Stats > Gameplay. They never meld perfectly. And leveling weapons sucks, it's just tedious(in general) and specifically doesn't fit the story, Shep isn't a grunt who's never held a gun before.

And the gameplay is rather poor in ME1, it's clumsy and shallow. 'Least Me3 isn't clumsy... too bad BioWare can't do ai for beans.

Don't forget the leveling in ME1 is super linier.

Post it in the sticky.

Stickies suck, 5 different conversations happening on top of one another, much better to have seperate coversations in different threads.

Doesn't change the fact that this belongs in the sticky.
