I hear that The Witcher is an utterly fantastic role-playing game. And so far with my 14 hours of Mass Effect, I can still say that Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines has superior role-playing. Mass Effect still suffers a bit from the "light-side/dark-side" effect which is very noticable in KotOR. At least now they toned it down a bit and have given you more than just two choices, one pure evil and the other angelic (like in KotOR).

Yeah. I prefer The Witcher to Mass Effect. None of the choices you make in Mass Effect count in the long run.

Thought you meant The Witcher didn't have choices. I've heard though that the choices you made in ME 1 will effect ME 2 and ME 3 (SPOILERS: like whether you saved the council or not).

Meh, that just feels like a dev cop-out. We'll have to see closer to ME2's release. Keep in mind you'd have to continue playing the game on the same system as well, which would ultimately ruin the experience for some people (I'm definately switching to PC version for 2&3).

I like The Witcher because it tied itself together nicely, and presented some pretty tough decision-making that actually counted towards the story in some significant manner, rather than just giving you points in "paragon" or "renegade." Storyline-wise I forgive ME for being cliche, and the story is incredibly well told. With The Witcher, it feels more like a classic WRPG experience. The storytelling is less streamlined and more open, but it's a lot more original (unless you count the fact it's based on a book by an acclaimed polish author).

Mass Effect didn't really have any important choices besides allowing certain teammates to die and that final choice in the end. It may do what KotOR2 did and have a dialogue box show up saying
"Hey, do you know if Shepard saved the council or not?" and "What allies did he lose during the war?"
You are able to import your character to ME2 and ME3, right?

I've never played the Witcher, though I did play many of ye classiques in the RPG genre, and I must say that, though ME is neither a particularly good RPG nor a particularly good TPS, the synergy of these two that Bioware captured produces something that, to me, is truly special.

Yeah, the only one that really affected gameplay was lost allies choice (none of the allies in the decision making had distinct, vibrant backgrounds either).
Saving the council barely changes the ending. Just a few lines of dialogue and that's about it.
GTAIV's storyline is considered the best of all time by many reviewers. I don't necessarily agree with critics on most things.

I know it doesn't change your character, and I'm fine with that. I just wish it had an impact on the story, or at least some of the decisions did, or they affected relationships between you and certain characters, etc.

KotOR II The Sith Lords actually had some good "influence" aspects with characters. Depending on what kind of character you played and how well you interacted with certain characters, you could influence them in certain ways. I really did like it. It's too bad BioWare didn't take that and integrate it into Mass Effect.

The Witcher > Mass Effect.

Mass Effect has some inspired moments but is mostly copy and paste outside of 14 hour story. The Witcher is fresh and feels very original.

It's only boring if you were expecting a pure shooter and got a RPG hybrid. It is a fantastic game.

...Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines...foxhound_fox

That game would have been the best game ever if it didn't have the last third of gameplay. And that boss battle... that was a joke. They made the game so you could avoid most combat for the first 2 thirds of the game, then all of a sudden all you were doing was fighting. Completely ruined the game.

EDIT: And the game was almost impossible to finish unless you put every single stat point into firearms, which meant you had to go through the game with a semi-retarded character and miss all the brilliant dialogue and such.

well i mean on my first playtrough, i played a lot of the game with a male character and was all badass, like i'd go with lots of decisions that got me into lots of trouble and had to fight my way out.

then on my second playthrough, i played a female and played the game a little more passively. What i found was that i avoided a lot of fights than in my first play, and also chose much different conversatins options etc.

i know it doesnt particularly affect the way you intereact with other caharcters but w/e.

Indeed. It should have been like Fallout where you could avoid combat all the way to the end. I was unlucky in that I played it like that most of the way through and had to cheat in order to beat the boss because I couldn't do it with my character.

I was expecting an RPG, I didn't get much :?Couth_

I never actually played KotoR or the sequel, I probably should though. I wouldn't mind if the decisions affected more than just your character though (it can go both ways, sometimes there's good examples of influence, and other times it just doesn't work, like Fable in my opinion).

ok, now this for me is a really hard one. I love the witcher, i love Mass effect. They are both great in different ways.

Mass effect has a better story imo, i loved it. The witcher has better gameplay imo, i like the combat more, its more rpg like. The witcher is far deeper and involving but at times becomes boring, Mass Effect seems to keep me hooked.

The witcher is a monster of a game, Mass effect can be completed in no time at all.

Personally i love them both, for different reasons. Once the enhanced version of The Witcher is out i may feel differently.

Its like this for me

The Witcher = Mass Effect PC >>>>>> Mass effect 360.

The influence in the second KotOR was actually quite good. It made certain characters, depending on your alignment, like or dislike you more the further you went to the left or right. It's not D&D alignment (two alignments instead of nine) but it's pretty damn good. That was one of the few things that was superior in the second one over the first, which made the characters much more likable.

It's missing for a good portion, not really 85% but it's certainly not there during the middle portion. Uninspired characters pretty much fuel the game from start to finish, without any sort of development at all. Jeff Gerstmann himself heralded it as the "greatest storyline in gaming." I can't exactly link you to giantbomb right now, seeing as the site is about to go up (officially).

Yeah, there's small instances like that, which don't really end up affecting your character or the storyline in general. It's similar to (don't shoot me) Oblivion in that aspect. It's not a bad game by any means, but in comparison to The Witcher it's far less of a WRPG, and that comes down to personal preference.

I thought that Mass Effect was one of Bioware's worst RPGs (far worse than Jade Empire, almost as bad as Neverwinter Nights), and that The Witcher was essentially the greatest story-driven RPG of the past 8 years.

I've started Mass Effect and I like it a lot so far.

But The Witcher... I just want to play it so badly! Its my most wanted title to play on the PC and it sucks that I don't have one to play it. :( That and Stalker are the two titles I really want to play.

I've already decided that if I get a job and don't plan on getting a new car soon that if Project Offset does not go to 360 or PS3 and stays PC exclusive, I will have a friend build a PC for me. Three major titles that I'm interested in plus the gazillion other titles that I would probably really enjoy (Oblivion with mods... ) and I think it would be a good decision.

yup. Oblivion with mods is amazing. Once the enhanced edition of The witcher is out it could well become the best RPG of recent times. Stalker is not for everyone, i loved it, amazing atmosphere. How i love the PC.
