Not trying to be disruptive or anything but Ive recently come to the conclusion that the Master Chief is really only a "hero" in one regard (I was going to post this in the Greatest hero section but it seemed better here since hes been out for a while) and that one regard is not even in the games. I mean look at this.

Halo (also Halo: The Flood): does he really do anything besides save his own ass? oh he almost activates the ring... he doesn't stop the flood from leaving (they clearly couldnt leave, because Ill be damned if the entire flood was only locked up by a single door) I mean he destroys the ring... and thats it... which didn't really do anything.

Halo 2: he wasn't even on the same side of the galaxy as Tartarus, Arbiter won this one.

Halo 3: He stopped all the rings from firing.... by pushing a button... are you telling me that Sergeant Johnson wouldnt have deactivated them? (and arbiter would have saved Johnson) and finally He activates installation 04 (the new one) but couldn't the arbiter have picked up Johnson during the last of johnsons life and activated it...

The only time he really does something of importance is when he saves Johnson in Fall of Reach...

I mean they are fun games and stuff its just that.... hes not a great hero.... at all... other people do most of the work...

Actually, he helped save quite a few marines from the Pillar of Autumn shortly before it crashed. He singlehandedly took on the flood and destroyed the Halo ring. Granted, it didn't make much of a difference since there were other rings, but I'd still say that's pretty heroic.

Halo 2: he wasn't even on the same side of the galaxy as Tartarus, Arbiter won this one.

Phelix806

But he did manage to take down the Prophet of Regret...alone...

Phelix806

That's still quite an achievement. He, with the Arbiter and Johnson, finally managed to finish off the Covenant and destroy the Flood once and for all.

Just because someone else could have done it, doesn't take anything away from the person/character who DID do it.

Master CHief is awesome..... I don't care what the haters say, I love his strong silent attitude... he doesn't need to talk a bunch of smack talk like most other heroes.... he knows what he's capable of, and doesnt give a **** what anyone else thinks, he gets the job done.

oh and Master Chief rides an alien nuke out of a space ship into space.... delivering it back to the covenant.

also, The Chief falls to earth from space without a ship and lives. He's a tough motha-*********.

His actions destroyed the majority of the largest Covenant fleet humanity had ever seen. He turned utter defeat (the Pillar of Autumn vs. several superior Covenant capital ships) into victory, and provided humanity with invaluable intelligence on the Covenant, Flood, Forerunners and Halo system.

Remember how Guilty Spark deceived him? What if he had died and another human was tricked by another Monitor? His victory ensured humanity were the only ones in the galaxy who knew what the Halos did. Without that, humanity would never have known to oppose the Covenant in Halo 2 at the firing, never had the keen insight to instantly seek the Index and never been able to spark the Covenant Civil War.

Halo 2: he wasn't even on the same side of the galaxy as Tartarus, Arbiter won this one.

Phelix806

The only reason Johnson and the Arbiter were able to stop the rings being used in Halo 2 and Halo 3 was because the Master Chief had

A) Gone through the process himself

B) Told them exactly how it worked, what to expect, how to stop it.

The Flood had taken over the Truth and Reconciliation ship from Halo 1 and could of easily escaped from Halo if you did not destroy the ring. Master Chief has saved not just Earth but the Galaxy Multiple times during the series. I think that's enough for him to be called a Hero.

I always did like Arbiter better, he had more development. Master Chief on the other hand was basically the one to go head-on and even then, he didn't do anything in particular to make him memorable in my opinion.

firstly no normal man could have achieved what MC has, how many characters do you know that could fall from the sky as far as he did and survive (beginning of halo 3) besides, read this wikipedia entry and you will clearly see that MC's heroism goes way beyond what you see in the games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Chief_(Halo)

Halo 1: he did not destroy the covenant fleet (at least most of it) the flood did that, he also didnt stop the flood from taking the Truth & Reconciliation, it was the leftover ODSTs from the Pillar of Autumn who did that (in the books, this is not shown in the game as it happens after the chief enters the T&R the second time)

I will take the argument that just because someone else could do it doesnt detract from his hero status argument as that makes sense. and again they are great games, I ust came to this conclusion.

Another argument could be said that he stopped the flood from leaving the original halo by destroying the Pillar of Autumn (thus making sure the flood couldn't take it)

In the end I have to say he is a hero, but I dont think hes the MAIN hero... the games just seem to focus on him when others do just as much/more.

actaully it was decided the other day that MC would kick solid snakes backside, isent one cow to this wikipedia entry about MC and he came back with the statement 'wow, god of war boss confirmed', let me recap, master chief is 7ft tall and weighs 1000 pounds in his armor, without his armor he stands 6ft 7 in tall and weighs in at 287 pounds, as somebody said the other day masterchief walks away from tactical nuclear missle strikes, he can fall several kilometres and survive, and he doesn't need to stealth kill a hundred troops, he will just take them head on and win, he is a hero, in every sense of the word, MC is insanely stronger and better at warfare than solid snake is, snake couldn't even reach MC's throat to strangle him from behind, and MC could take one of snakes stinger missiles and laugh it off,lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Chief_(Halo)

A hero isn't defined by who else could've done the job. A big part of the hero archetype is that it's a character that puts himself in the right place at the right time. Sometimes to defeat a major enemy character. Other times to play his part in a larger scheme. Or... sometimes to just push a button when no one else is there to do it at the time.

For both Gordon Freeman and Master Chief, the intention of having these characters be silent is to allow the player to better feel like they ARE the main protagonist.

MajorGamer531

Right. The Warren Specter school of thought for character design has a silent protagonist so the player can interject some of his/her own personality into the character. That's why so many people find it easy to empathize with characters like the JC Denton, Freeman and the Chief,

Agreed. Plus, you have to understand that the Chief is a valuable source for the UNSC, and also, arguably, the greatest Spartan. . . if he did not save his own *** at times that could have been terrible for everyone (he had to think of all mankind) . . . it is better to have one Spartan, rather than none . . .
