Maybe not SW material so much, but...have you ever made a video game, or helped make one?

A while back I started to build an RPG on RPG Maker. It was a surreal death-dream set in a quasi-random generating forest filled with phantasmic denizens hellbent on not letting you escape to the next realm. Put in heaps of hours of work on it, but ultimately shelved the project, as I didn't have time, or motivation, honestly, to complete it. I might go back and finish it some day, we'll see.

What about you bros. Ever built a game, or worked on one in some capacity?

No, making games is a good way of taking a hobby and turning into a job, and thus taking all the enjoyment out of gaming, for me anyway.

Doesn't have to be that way, but understand it might be for you. Personally I had a blast making the game, or at least what I finished of it. Honestly felt like I was playing it as I was making it, weirdly. It was a cool escape, while it lasted. Makes me want to go back to it.

Did several microgames through the years, just because coding is super fun.

Recently I've been working on a bigger project which I decided to do every single aspect like, coding, visuals, sound, etc. Not a wise decision but once I have a good vertical slice I'll start looking for help. Mostly with characters and animation, which I truly hate working on.

Dipped my toes in it a bit. Made a pong clone on an Arduboy a while back.

I'm currently messing around with Godot/Blender/Krita to make a 3D game (because i'm a glutton for punishment :P). I haven't even looked into the sound side of things. I need to get back into it though. I've been distracted by playing actual games.

Man they are a shed load of work though. Programming, 3D modelling, rigging, weight painting, texturing/materials, animation, sound effects, Music, Gameplay design, level design, puzzle design, writing and so on. Many of those have many sub tasks too.

Then you need to take all that and make it actually good. Look good, play good, sound good. They really are a huge undertaking. On the one hand I get frustrated at the lack of technical progress with the new gen games. It's last gen tech running on steroids. On the other hand though...I'm in awe that they work at all.

Yes, and still working on developing games (most are not my own). Most gamers don't realize the work involved.

Yeah, it's nuts. Just to run a basic script across a quadrant would take me hours...and hours...and hours. Granted, I'm really detail-oriented, so basic to me is definitely not basic to everybody else.

Do broken, unfinished text adventures in BASIC count? If so, yessir! I was a highly prolific dev. 😎

@nod_calypse: I made an arcade game in college. It was a Robotron 2084 clone.

Fun project.

No, but I would love to. Or at least have the funds to pay someone to make it for me.

I've been building a boardgame for the past couple years, and even that is quite the undertaking. Creating the actual game isn't that bad, but keeping people focused on getting it done is. So is getting people to help with play testing, getting art done, all the layout and small details, etc. All of that can definitely become a chore, but it HAS to get done. But when it all works, it feels awesome! Hopefully it all pays off in the end.

I developed Elden Ring. Without me, this 96 Metacritic banger wouldn't be a thing.

Kinda, I worked on a 2D space invaders clone using javascript, html and css.

Very basic stuff and probably the fullest extent of me ever developing a game. 😅

No, as I am not technically-inclined and felt that anything involving computers or technology is mind-numbing. This is why I do not work in a technical occupation.

Years back, helped design some games that never really got off the ground. Mostly level design and aiding in mechanics design.

But as a 3d artist, yes I've contributed to a lot of games, more than I can remember tbh. Been some years since I've contracted direct with a studio, think my last go was with Ubisoft back in 2018. Closest I've done to anything game related recently was with the guys at Kitbash3d. But that stuff isn't exactly game specific, VFX studios use those kits as well.

The closest I ever got was being the lead moderator for H Hour Worlds Elite. David Sears asked me to join the team and SOCOM is my favorite online franchise of all time, so I couldn't refuse. One of these days I would like to release a game of my own. My dream job would to be a creative director, but I went to school for game 3D game art and animation.

I like teaching myself things, so with AI being the way it is now I might be able to teach myself coding with some higher learning at my side.

No. Probably wouldn't enjoy it.

Be a part of, design and come with ideas that are being implemented? That would be incredibly fun. Programming shit? Coding? Ugh.

I'd basically want to be Miyamoto to work with games..

I went though the whole Amsoft basic book that came with the CPC 464 and used to go through coding books from the local library. Everyone thaught I was some wierd geek and my parents never supported me in it, told me ill never get anywhere in life sitting on computers all day, it was commonly frowned upon back then to play videogames or have an interest in computing, so much so that youd be embarassed to tell people you were into it. I made my first video game when I was nine years old on my Amstrad CPC, a text based adventure game that I called Space Comb, inspired by Star Trek and the first ever (i think) DIscworld game that was called The Colour of Magic.

Most recently I was working on a Streets of Rage esque beatemup in Unity, set in a post opocalyptic mining town in Yorkshire, England. It got canned though.

I was into RPG Maker back in the early 2000s. Made a few demos and was working on a few indie RPG projects, but eventually shelved them after I got busy with university.
