This is really starting to bother me.  People are always laughing at the name Wii.  I want to just mention the reasoning behind the name change, and the meaning of the name.

Change from Revolution:  Not only was the name Revolution already copyrighted, but when people googled Nintendo's console, Ninty wanted them to find the console, not a news story about a civil war in some third world country.  Also, the name Wii doesn't need to be translated, because it's a nonsense word (actually it's not, but I'll get into that later).

Meaning of Wii:  Neither "Nintendo" or "Wii" are nonsense words.  They do have a meaning, but in a language that is obsolete.  In Japanese Ancient Kanji, Nintendo means "Luck from Heaven".  And here is the clincher.  The Wii was called the revolution after all.  In Ancient Kanji, Wii literally translates to "Overthrow the Gods" which in my opinion is an incredibly meaningful name, that truly mirrors the Wii's success this generation.

Just wanting to get that out for.

And for those too lazy to read, Wii=Overthrow the Gods

Even without an actual meaning, Wii sounds better IMO than Revolution...

I agree... there really is nothing like "Wii" either. Everyone knows what you are talking about when you mention "Wii."

I think I know the major reason why it was changed... lay-bo-lu-shi-an is hard for the Japanese to say.

Did you ever think that they wanted the name "Wii" so they could just say in their dang commercials, "Wii, would like to play."

wii may have a back story of what it means, and what it stands for. But do you think many consumers will go out of their way to find what it is (or even think their is a meaning behind the name), rather than just seeing "Wii" as "Wii"?

yeah, its a good thing nintendo is at least original this way, rather then then calling their console for something cheesy like xbox or let alone xbox 360

This might be one of the best names for a video game console in the history of video game consoles. The only ones that beat this are Sega platform names (not including Master System or Game Gear) and MAYBE DS.

I call bullcrap on that.  Wii isn't even proper romanji for kanji pronounciation.  And even if Wii actually meant something, it would need two words to represent "Luck from heaven".  You'd need the word "luck" and the word "heaven" to be able to make that kind of sentence.  Ancient Kanji is a derivitive of the most basic Chinese character.

You obviously didn't even read what I wrote, because you're already mixing stuff up.

I believe nin means person though I'd have to see Nintendo write their name out.  Ten is definitely heaven, and Do means to happen.

Well, I'll leave the rest of the figuring out for you.
