Media Create Japan Sales: Finally, PS4 Claims Japan

Looks like all of Sony's recent efforts - enlisting third party support for the PS4, announcing major new games for it for the Japanese audience, the price drop - have started to pay off. The PS4 is now officially the top system in Japan, and it has been for the last three weeks. I really like this, because it tells me the console market is not dead in Japan. In turn, that is good for me, because I love Japanese console games.

The 3DS remains king on the software front, of course, but it looks like the PS4 is really coming into its own.

Incorrect. Mario Kart 8 sold over a million. Splatoon is already at 850,000, and Phantom Pain is at 650,000.

On the ps4 you are correct,but not on the WiiU. I don't think anything anytime soon will sell over a million copies on the ps4.We may not see the first million seller in Japan for that console for another few years unless phantom pain manages to break a million eventually or a game that releases in a year or two does it.

lolwat? Next year alone, there are four potential million sellers on PS4: Dragon Quest XI, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III, and Persona 5.

We have to wait and see about those. If I recall only one or two games managed to break 1 million on the ps3.One or more ps4 game will eventually manage to do it, but not sure if it will be next year or two years from now.I can see all those games selling well in Japan anyway, but I'm not 100% sure if any of them will break a million yet.

As of June this year (I think the tracking period that ends on June 2) Mario Kart 8 had surpasses a million copies in sales in Japan. Your information is outdated by a few months.

Every Dragon Quest game, every Kingdom Hearts game, and every Final Fantasy game has sold more than a million in Japan. The PS3 stat you quote is largely because those franchises either jumped ship from PS3 last generation, or had no PS3 installment period last generation. But again, if you really, actually believe that those games are not going to sell a million, I don't know what to say to you. Maybe Persona 5 will not, it's a bit more niche, but the other three games absolutely will, and hell, with persona 5 beating those three games on all anticipated games lists and polls in Japan, it will too.

@charizard1605: Traditionally,Media Create or famitsu would make a list for million sellers at the year end,only those who reach the list would consider as major title.

I read about that this year,there were like 4 to 5 3DS games with nothing on console.I thought this is the first year no console game sell more than a million in Japan,it was a shock.

The list was for the games that sold 1 million copies in the first six months of 2015, that's all. MK8 took 12 months to reach 1 million, but those 12 months were spread out across two separate years, so it would not show up in any such lists.

Nintendo be balling baby. Such awesome numbers. Does Japan not like GTA5? Would think it would sell better.

I have to say the sales the PS4 got when the price cut went into effect in Japan were rather disspointing but I think they managed to make up for that with much smaller sale drops in the following weeks then I expected.

Its a "new price edition". When the Ps3 version came out it sold like 700k units. Those are strong sales for a console game in Japan.

GTA5 has already collectively sold over a million in Japan. That's a budget price re-release of the game.

The only games I'm betting on selling a million out of some of the games you listed so far in Japan once it releases is final fantasy(about 80% sure with this) and maybe dragon quest(About 50% sure with this one). Persona is questionable and I'm not sure aboit Kingdom hearts because the last console kingdom hearts released like a decade ago if I recall and I'm not sure if the franchise will grab enough interest anymoreto break the 1 million mark, but people may be excited enough to buy that game a lot once it releases which may help it break a million.

Why isn't the Wiiu selling better at $100 less though??

Dragon Quest outsells Final Fantasy. A Dragon Quest release day is actually usually a public holiday in Japan. No way are you actually arguing that it won't sell a million, and more importantly, that Final Fantasy has more of a chance to do so. Final Fantasy sold a million even on a machine like the PS3, so again, your argument is moot. Kingdom Hearts can have random remasters sell half a million copies, so a brand new game will definitely sell a million. And Persona, the game that is beating all of these games on Japanese most anticipated lists, is assuredly going to cross a million copies too. Random percentage numbers don't change that, man.

Yup and thats why PS4 is current gen 8 console leader with over 700+ games to play atm.

Meanwhile the Wiu had 6 new games total released for the console in June this year. 1 a month isn't very good TOTAL.

I havent bought a game for my WiiU since MK.

Well PS4 has more current AAA games than X1 too.

Any way you slice it the PS4 is doing well.

I can admit the 3DS is doing well, not sure why it's so tough to admit the same for PS4.

If its doing so bad, than the WiiU shouldn't even be mentioned again this gen,.

This is weekly sales. 3DS should still have a HUGE lead in terms of lifetime sales.

ADD: Yep, HUGE HUGE lead. PS4 still has only 1.8 mil lifetime sale in Japan, which is actually lower than Wii U's 2.6 mil. 3DS on the other hand has been at 8.8 mil since 2012.

The 3ds is over 19.3 million right now according to media create.

That is HIGHLY unlikely with the 3DS having totals sales around 50 million. PS4 is probably around 28 million worldwide.
