Media Create Japan Sales October 17-23: 3DS Outsells Everything Else Combined

The latest Media Create numbers are in, and they make it clear that, as far as Japan is concerned, the 3DS is here to stay. Despite having only three (very low ranking) game titles in the software charts, the 3DS stillsomehow managed to be the top selling software for another week, outselling all other hardware put together.

Basically, 3DS sales are rising like hell. It is the only system this week that experienced any (massive) hardware sales growth. This is in spite of a complete absence of any games.

Courtesy of NeoGAF and Chris1964, here is a graph that tracks sales for the DS and 3DS over similar tracking periods in their first full years on the market (3DS sales start from Week 8 because that was when it was released- conversely, DS sales from its launch period- November through December 2004- are missing because this graph is tracking the first full year on the market for both (2005 for the DS, 2011 for the 3DS)

Very impressive. Still, realistically, it will be an uphill battle in North America and Europe (ie. teh smartphone/PC gamin' lands).

At 260,000 units in September's NPD, over a five-week period, the 3DS was only selling about 52,000 units a week in NA.

It seems that, despite being a much larger market, Nintendo was actually selling less units per week in America than in Japan.

That's going to have to change dramatically if the 3DS is to become a DS-style success: Nintendo sold nearly twice as many DS units in both America (55.69) and Europe (59.3) as they did in Japan (32.87).

And yet, nothing in the top 10 software titles ...

Supposedly The World Ends with You 2 is in the works too. Looks like I'll have no shortage of games to play on this system and thats before you factor in the unannounced and unreleased GBA games for Ambassadors. Might even end up spending more on the 3DS than the DS and thats saying a lot given the size of my DS collection.

Good sales for the 3DS though I still regret buying one.

PS3 beats Wii60 once again.
