PS4 is in first place when combining PS4 and Pro sales (31,278). Good week for Sony! Granted, it's a little hollow if you can figure out why Switch sales dropped, but there's no arguing the great software sales.

@Zero_epyon: though we dont do that, since the mixing of the Ds and 3Ds skews never counted as totals. They always counted as separate but cause of that was the case, then the 3ds always dominated japan, even during a period when ps4 was number 1.

I see no reason to not combine SKUs. Every other region does it. They only separate it here because they want to track the individual SKUs. Don't deny PS4 this win. It could be the last win it ever has in Japan. :(

uh, the DS and the 3DS are completely different consoles... the Pro and the PS4 are the same (the same as in "have the same games library" available)

edit: Or do you mean the 2DS instead of the DS? If so then yeah, they should be counted combined cause they're the "same" console but with different Hardware. What counts is having the same game library

@techhog89: no ones denying it. its just a fact they dont combine em. when the ps4 was number one for a second, followed by the 3ds. they didnt combine 3ds skus, which if they did at the time the ps4 never would have been a top selling hardware for those weeks/months in japan. PS4 can get that same treatment, the DS brand and the 3ds brand have gotten.

@Vatusus: not what im talking about, guy. im talking about generations, not the hardwares being similar. When the Ds was popular in japan back then and nintendo had different SKU's, that being the DS, DS lite and the DSI, they never combined the numbers. even during periods where the psp beat the DS brand, they never combined the SKU's, had they done that it would of been a different story, where the Ds easily outsold the PSP at the time back then when the PSP beat the Ds.

GT Sport is off to a flying start. That's really impressive!

The numbers were always combined before. Then they seperated them down at the bottom. The PS4 and Pro sales were combined too , and then seperated at the bottom. These recent sales that SHEEP post don't have them combined , then seperated at the bottom. Either Media Create changed , or Sheep are intentionally using these seperated only numbers because they want to show the Switch in its best light.

@Rahnyc4: It doesn't really matter. :P They are both PS4 platforms. One is more powerful, so I think it makes sense to consider it the sales of the PS4 family of platforms as a group. It's nice to see the system doing well, especially considering the state of console gaming in Japan.

If you're talking about the NeoGAF threads, the guy who made the threads there combined the SKUs himself. I can start doing that if people want me to, but I'm just lazy. If you look at the source I'm copying from, you'll see that I'm literally copying and pasting what's there. Also, I made sure to note that PS4 won this week. You have no reason to be upset.

This is Japan we're talking about! The console market over there is shrinking. This isn't good for Japan, even after 3 days! If Super Mario Odyssey manages to sell above 150,000 units in one day, prepare to eat your words.

This talk about MS not caring about Japan is BS. Put it this way, 150k x $70 (average new price) = $10,500,000 less of course, production costs, money to the gameshops, etc. That's not chump change.

Lex Luger should have done the same with all of those steroids, maybe he would have walked normally. Gran Turismo Sport didn't sell well compared to past iterations in Japan. Shows that a popular console game isn't enough to push PS4 sales to a shrinking market.

Yes, there's a problem, console market is shrinking in Japan and no one is pointing it out.

It's not a large market for Microsoft. Xbox One has sold 81k units total in Japan. Every Sony and Nintendo console and handheld sold more than that in their opening week. Every single one except Virtual Boy. What's the point? They're not making any money, I can tell you that, and I doubt that it's helping them with Japanese support. It just seems like a waste.

They should probably knock off other markets while there at it.

@lrdfancypants: 360 was a massive flop there as well. It did a lot better, but a million over 8 years isn't anything to cheer about. There's also nothing they can do to fix the situation. They'll never be as popular as Nintendo or Sony there, and the dedicated console market in Japan is very weak. They'd basically need to buy exclusive rights to Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Monster Hunter to stand a chance, and that would ultimately cost them more money than it makes them... And Nintendo would still dominate them due to portability, Pokemon, Mario, Animal Crossing and Splatoon. Sorry, but I just don't see a scenario where Microsoft can be successful in Japan. It's better for them to cut their losses since they probably haven't made a penny from Japan since the OG Xbox. If you combine the sales of all Xbox hardware, Japan counts for less than 1% of sales. That's not going to cover marketing or distribution costs, and there's never going to be a way to turn it around.

I really hope that you've never said that Nintendo should go third-party, or else the irony and hypocrisy will reach new levels.

This is not counting Digital sales, online focused games sell a lot through digital sales in Japan compared to physical copies, Destiny 2 still +80k, everybody's golf sold +40k and so.
