I just got that game a little while ago, underrated. That game is so much more than ANY RTS to date.

Medieval 2 Total War is crazy big, yeah.

Lucky format size is really alleviated on PC with HDDs.

Right now, I don't know if it's needed, but it most likely will be in the future. Right now though, it's just a luxury.

ahh you said it yourself.. "dvd9=good enough for this gen".. the ps3 is for this gen and the next. when 720 comes out with an hd format for their games youll see what im talking about. your only thinking of "now" while sony and ps3 gamers are thinking of the present and the future.

honestly, I highly doubt MGS4 is compressed AND over 25 gb. either that's really really REALLY crappy compression tech they got goin on, or it's not compressed. why compress if you don't have too? But why force the new format if you don't need it either? compression only gets better, 9 GB is more than enough space.

Thats just proof that Blu Ray will be needed for CONSOLES, not for PC gaming. If an RTS game is 7.6 GB's, just wait till UT3 comes out, that game will probably be bigger due to all the freaking textures and the enormous amount of maps plus the whole slew of individual characters. I think in UT2k4 there were like 30 characters and more then 60 maps plus a bunch of vehicles, weapons and combat types as well as online play.

With the increase in internet connection speed and much larger hard disc storage capacity, disc media will soon become a thing of the past and digital distribution will become much more prevalent.

because 2 reasons 1)im pretty sure it was said in an interview...i dont have it, but if you'd like to search go for it. 2) theres no way in hell that Resistance is 17 gigs compressed. If you know the compression technology available today, then you'd know is can be compressed a lot better. That kind of game does not take 17 gigs uncompressed. It can be done on DVD. of course uncompressed has it "advantages" but nothing completely major.

you dont get my point and ur right i dont know compression tech but do you? Have you worked with compression tech on blu-ray because if you havnt done it before then dont know what ur talking about. you have no leg to stand on unless they really did say it in an interview which i dont remember.

I do get your point.. and yes i do have a leg to stand on. Your logic is that if I haven't worked with the tech then I don't know it? Research anyone? compression technology is amazing. Which is one reason why OBLIVION took 4.7 gigs on a DVD. Need I say more for that massive, detailed, all voice acted game? I know what im talking about. Find me where it says Resistance is compressed as best it can and falls at 17 gb. It ISNT compressed. Ask anyone else that isn't a die hard "BLURAY FTW PS3 ROXOR" fanboy.

Hell even Mass Effect fits on the DVD9. It may be pushing the boundaries, probably just fitting in, but it works amazing, and it fits. If that fits, theres more room for these huge world open ended games, which EVERY game will NOT be. Who's to say compression won't get better?

The newly released S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a whopping 10 gigs, unbelievable. But as someone pointed out earlier, digital distribution is the future, and I would suspect that games will be so massive one day, you will download sections/missions of a game on demand when you need them, all the while replacing content already completed in a game(Broadband obviously needs to catch up in the US). Harddrives are so inexpensive these days, it's a shame the 360 has only a 20 gig drive, They could easily put a 100 gig in there today. The one thing that the premium PS3 did right was putting in a 60 gig.

I am a hardcore audiophile and even I know that 7.1 high def audio wont take up a ton of space, although that also depends on how the audio is produced and the bit rate that music is being played at. I can make an audio file that is 3 minutes long with a bit rate that would make the file about 17 MB's when it could be compressed down to like 4 MB's or so. If we are talking about massive orchestral music and the length of the sound track, then yes it could take up a lot of space.

Anyone who has programed a game knows that in game audio (Exept for sound track and FMV) is single chanel audio that is bounced around from one speaker to the next dependent on the direction your character is facing. True Hi-Def audio runs at a smooth 192 bit rate constant. With current compression tech you can fit over 200hours of Hi-Def audio on 1 DVD.
