Well, love 'em or hate 'em, Metacritic's here to stay. And now they're about to REALLY add fuel to the fire of your favorite games.
Metacritic is now going to have a badge for games that score 90 or higher on the site for games with at least 15 reviews or up. The "Must-Play" gaming badge.
So if one version of a game scores an 89 and another one a 90... guess who gets the badge? So all of a sudden, a lot of games are going to be seen as less than worthy with people looking straight past the score, and looking towards the badge as validation now. Which is hilarious being that they already looked past written reviews and went straight to the score. I guess this is the next stage of insanity for the gaming industry. I guess we kind of asked for this. LOL!
I’m fine with this. I like review scores myself however I don’t treat them as the end all, be all and freak out over them like some people do. I feel the same about these.
People put so much emphasis on a number it's quite ridiculous. I forgot which person on this forum legit said he only buys games that are 9 or higher and avoids everything else...lol. I much prefer a review that just lays out the pros and the cons of the game and you form if the game is for you. I enjoy ACG on YouTube.
Lol. You’ve gotta be twelve to get upset by Metacritic or put any value to that badge.
Which means System Wars will get so much more entertaining now.
Gaming message boards are going to be bloody battlegrounds, and I'll have to buy more popcorn.
Also the fun of studios closing down for not getting the badge.
All of a sudden, I can imagine a lot more outlets getting courted hard for better review scores. So the review sites will be the ones making out like bandits.
Yeah. Even worse than this is the way the game publishers take these stupid scores seriously.("If your game doesn't get 85+ on metacritic there will be no bonus for you.")
@dorog1995: Publishers take it seriously because of money and there are lots of people who don’t trust their own opinions, or even have one, who will only buy games that are 85+ on metacritic. It’s a sad state of affairs.
Especially considering the poor quality of the reviews and reviewers that make up the score.
Just when you thought Metashitic couldn't get any worse this happens.
Metashitic is the most useless "gaming" site there is, they literally only throw reviews from people who've played these games (done the hard work) to get an average score. And now they create a "badge" like its prestigious or something.
Nothing prestigious have ever came from a toilet lol.
Polygon just removed scores from their reviews so it seems the trend of number scores is going to die.
Yeah the ladies at Whats Good Games podcast spoke about that last episode. Steimer who used to review for IGN was adamant about how much she hates scores for games.

I mean, scores just fuel fanboy wars and nothing esle.

Just look at the TR thread over the 6 they got.
No doubt. Ive gotten a little late in the game for them to matter to me personally. But I understand the fun of it in SW.
I don't really care so much about scores. I just use them as a general indicator for the quality of the game. If I am actually interested in the game, I will do my research to see if it is right for me. Just look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider.... GS gave it a 6, but it is does not deter me from wanting to play it.

I can see a small site sending a draft to a publisher.

"A bunch on gibberish no one will read and the score of 1/10.
We know we are a small site, but this could drop yout MC score and your game doesn't get a badge.

Yeah you're only saying that because your platform of choice is unlikely to get a 90+ title. Have some faith in MS yo, FH4 looks dope and might get one of those badges.

My god xbox games scoring like shit have lemmings crying, funny enough i don't see you complain about Forza scores..I guess those are a lie as well. lol

There's just one flaw, and that's the badge from Metashitic is worthless as the general gaming community (casuals) don't even know that site and don't care, so its a waste of money anyway.
Also Metashitic doesn't use every review and weighs some more than others.
And even if your game scores 90+ and gets the badge, that badge will be made up from scores like 6's & 7's too, remember how UC4 is in the 90's and yet has a 4/10 score in there.

I don't reckon as people love numbers and boxing things up - it's just how we're wired. I remember when Edge removed scores from reviews, however that was just a means to gain approval from the gaming intelligentsia. All very high brow.
I feel like Metacritic is on a downward slope. They were significant for a while and now it's just as much about Opencritic.
@poptart Yes scores are useful for people. So they will stay.
@Ant_17 Polygon is a political activist site... I would be hesitant to call them reviews anyway since they have ulterior motives. The 'reviews' are likely an afterthought.

Tell me what are Forza's scores? I wouldn't know because I don't rely on that shit site to tell me what a good or bad game is, unlike yourself who doesn't own a PS4 so you need Metashitic to tell you what's a good game so you can argue over it on here.

Don't act like you know me, I've been against that turd of a site since I found out about it. I don't need a 90+ game to enjoy my hobby, I enjoy my Forza's regardless of how good/bad they are scored on that site.
@i_p_daily: Lol yeah we don't know you troll, you're so mysterious and shocking. Forza good, Xbox good, playstation bad. Please read that in a caveman voice as its how I read all your post.
Rating games with numbers isn't going anywhere, and metacritic should only be used as a jumping off point.
If you want a game get it, if you don't then don't. Relying on another person's singular opinion is like having someone chew your food for you. (if you don't know them personally)
At least with a site like metacritic they do all the work by averaging out the good, bad, paid off, and bias sites out there.... in the end, if ever it were a thing, the scores you see on a site like that, most generally sum up the mass appeal or scope of a game. Much more so then any one site or review at least.
I honestly only use metacritic to own herms because the PS4 has more 9.0 games on the site. In reality? I could care less I play what I want to and outside of this shithole it doesn't mean much. I will say games that generally have mid 8s and above tend to be pretty good or even great especially if it's in a genre I care about. One reason I've always visited IGN and gamespot is because they tend give a review score that reflects the average on MOST games.

The badge is pointless & worthless.
Is 90 even that it has a 40 in there, because 1 bad score will not pull down you average when you have 100 other scores.
That is the point of average you combine all the scores and make 1 good or bad is how all games are rated,a game like uncharted 4 has a ton of 100 and 90's score which is why one 40 score doesn't bring the average down from 90,now if you look on xbox games the case is difference Halo 5 for example it has many 90's but not much 100 scores,so any bad score will hit harder that average, specially if you have many 80's as well.
All games are rated the same way, look at it this way Tomb Raider now has a higher score on xbox than it does on PS4,because well xbox sited are rating the game higher so they are affecting the average, and i don't see you complain about that, most sites will give 1 score for all version,in the cases of xbox only publications they are hiking the score with their blow up scores.
Again downplaying metacritic is a joke all games are calculated then same way,the xbox one exclusives are just getting bad scores because what they are releasing isn't good, you blame meta, but in reality blame all sites since they are the ones who rate the games and meta just join their score for an average, example Stated of Decay 2 didn't get a high score on gamestop, and neither did on most sites while Spiderman did get good scores on most sites that is the real difference.

Seriously a low score (even if it wasn't deserving) won't stop you from having fun with the game, so you should just let it go. We don't need to see someone create another one of these idiotic things
I bet that some people on here signed lol
I for one think that sites like Metashitic are fuel for the fanboys to boast/slam a game depending on their agenda and nothing more. I remember a certain person on here trying to tell people that certain games were bad because of their user scores on Metashitic, dumbest thing i've ever read.
I don't need to tell you ass you were on the Forza Hoirizon 3 hype thread you know it scored a 9,you tell dynamite cop that 1 bad score even if it wasn't deserving won't stop him from enjoying the game, then you attack metacritic as always but you say absolutely NOTHING about gamespot score.
Because FH3 scored a 9 so there was no tears, only joy not once you attacked gamespot for the 9 score or discredit it at all,you just ate it metacritic is a site that aggregate scores, the scores them self come from outside sources,so in order for Sea of thief to get a bad score on meta, sites such as this one most rate the game low first,so if you want attack sites attack individual ones instead of meta.
See.
And yes i do own a PS4 stop you tears dude and change the broken record.

Such a liar which is why you say shit when gamespot scored FH3 9,you just downplay meta which aggregate score bring down that favorable 9,since FH3 had 86 on meta and here it had 9.. You are a joke..lol
Thats cool and all for systems with more dedicated padding (most of those "Must Play" games are actually on PC, but have a 87-89), but doesn't really impact their total high scoring library list though. The site won't revolve around a badge next to a title, games without 15 reviews won't officially be excluded like at GR. A user would have to arbitrarily do that.
