MGS4 is the best metal gear game ever
Yup, MGSV is still great gameplay-wise, but the story wasnt as good. It cathered too much to Peace Walker fans. Makes it even more sad that Kojima won't do another Metal Gear ;_;
MGS feels wrong without Kojima, the guy that created the Stealth genre all by himself.
Seriously Konami took the biggest L

This. And yes, Harry Gregson Williams did an awesome job with the soundtrack. All the way back to MGS2 he added a lot to the series, that was only reserved to good movies.

It's awful and practically ruined everything good about the entire franchise.
My heart aches when i say this, but MGSV did that.

+1 and I'm out lol. Can't do this topic anymore.

As for the soundtrack, yeah it was pretty nice. I still prefer the OSTs for MGS2, MGSV, and especially MGS3. MGS3s soundtrack is godlike.
Well, just one more thing...
Kojima, the guy that created the Stealth genre all by himself.
There were stealth games before Metal Gear and there was a 3d stealth game before Metal Gear Solid. And while Kojima is one of the most influential guys to work in the genre, it was much of a back and forth. Lots of games in the genre borrowed from each other.
You could credit Kojima for popularizing the genre and adding much to its evolution, but that's about it.
in one of the worst games ever made
MGS5 is easily a much superior game worthy of its acclaim I just find it strange it's so vilified for actually bieng playable, as for MGS4 I think people just wanted to give it a dignified farewell, like a congressman that should go to jail that gets a standing ovation for their service on their last day that lasts several minutes, I feel MGS4's praise comes from the series past success, the game was written as to give it fan service rather than serve as something that stands on its own, MGS4 isn't a game, it's a gigantic cutscenes with bouts of gameplay as an intermission
it's so strange Kojima does have the good sense for presentation in areas like design, and the audio and visuals and elements of the writing (like the big ideas on the story's, settings, etc), hell his games seem to always get praise for being technical marvels of sorts, but then he just really suffers with delivery in other areas like over-writing, telling not showing, and dragging scenes out needlessly to the point it came make a game painful to play
Didn't like Harry Gregson Williams much either, bit generic. The PS1 soundtrack (whoever did that) had an awesome moody soundtrack.

@foxhound_fox: Naw MGS 4 was good. It wasnt the best in the series, but it wasnt bad.
It retconned almost everything built up to that point with...
The gameplay was great in the first two Acts, but those lasted far too little time and the third, fourth and fifth Acts were nothing but tripe, fan service and even greater fan service.
The game was clearly designed by committee and Kojima had little to no input. It would have been significantly more cohesive... and for a Kojima game to be more cohesive than an attempt to make a Kojima-like game is an insult to anyone who makes a Kojima-like game.

Even the gameplay in Acts 1 and 2 weren't all that great either. There was a clear "sneak" and a clear "aid the rebels" path. It left a really great first impression until you realized that you didn't have as many real options as you thought you had.
ON TOPIC: Yes, the soundtrack was awesome and might have been the best soundtrack in the series. Maybe.

Considering I replayed MGS2 and MGS3 probably a good 40-50 times EACH just in the main stories, let alone all the additional content (Skateboarding in MGS2S I probably invested a good 50-60 hours in by itself), the fact I only finished MGS4 once and couldn't be arsed to go through it a second time is very telling about how much I valued the gameplay.
Hell, I have 5 hours in MGSV:GZ and I think I completed the mission 6-7 times.

It's funny, everyone gives MGS5 crap. But the first thing I thought when I got to the ending was: "Yep, he's definitely the guy who made MGS2." lol!
@trollhunter2:
There's some really good stuff,as with all the mgs games, however I bought the soundtrack(imported) and to be honest there's more weak stuff imo.
Every time MGS4 is mentioned the same butthurt known faces come to post about how much they hated it. It's like the game took the life of someone precious lol. It's become a broken record at this point. MGSIV will be engraved in these butthurt minds forever. Not to say they don't have invalid opinions of course every one is welcome to share but at this point it's just tiring lol.
The second most memorable soundtrack in the series, probably the most actually ( MGSV pales in comparison) . I loved the fan service and the zaniness of the cutscenes. However it is indeed a disappointing game compared to its prequel. I still really enjoyed it and would love see a reimagining with the Fox Engine.
The hate is undeserved imo. Kojima strongly focused on storytelling at the time, while maintaining the mgs stealth gameplay we all know and love. He really did set a new bar for story driven games, which is undeniable. Now with MGSV he mostly focused on gameplay, after initial complaints about MGS4 have too many cutscenes.
Now the fanboys complain that its too much unnecessary gameplay and not enough story :/
You just can't satisfy the fanboys
Also solid snake will forever be > Big Boss for me
agreed.
MGS in general is just on a pedestal I'd hold along Castlevania when it comes to god like musical prowess.
Konami used to be such a fucking beast.

He didn't create Stealth genre though.
The series as a whole is known for having great soundtracks. a lot of people consider it the best in the series, but for me MGS3 is the best.
Also, the feature that MGS4 had in the first two acts of having rebels fighting the PMCs should have been included in MGSV it would have been more interesting
I think OP has no idea what the hell he is talking about. SOUNDTRACK? This means only 1 SOUNDTRACK but a whole game was meh music. NOBODY CARES WHAT GAME HAS GOOD SOUNDTRACK, I WANT GOOD OST, NOT SOUNDTRACK JUST FOR 1 SCENE. OMFG!!!!!!!!
For this soundtrack its good but for good OST? Nope since a whole game had bad music

Stop feeding me with your wrong opinions. One of the best "Soundtrack"? One of the best soundtracks is right dude, if you implied a grammatical error :/
Also as if I would post the whole score in the OT, I have something else to do

A WHOLE GAME OST must be good, not just cutscenes. I don't play cut-scenes. I want gameplay with good OST, not just menu theme or cut scenes. I said 1 soundtrack because GAMEPLAY OST must be good, not CREDIT scene

soundtrack is soundtrack. Even if music comes during cutscenes only. Your entire post adds nothing to this discussion, as I'm talking about the soundtrack not gameplay or cutscenes

Please explain how MGS4 is a good game. I am curious to know how you as a MGS fan could justify enjoying it.
You cannot just dismiss negative opinions by hand-waving them away and not offering some sort of explanation as to why you think they are wrong.
It's not even the best MGS soundtrack ever (that one is 3). It's pretty good, but good god does it get overbearing at times. Much like the game itself.
And for those who say MGS4 is the best game in the series- lol. Just lol. I'm not getting into this argument again, because I've done it too many times in the last few years, but I can say this, GotP almost ruined any any all interest I had in the franchise, that story was utter trash.
MGSV is so much better. The story is non existent but that doesn't matter, because the game does t shove it in my face every chance it gets. I really need to get back to it one day.

For me MGS doesn't mean shit without good story. I liked MGS4 story and really enjoyed, it was not perfect and I think solid snake deserves much better finale but it is what it is.
Even if MGS4 is not the best in the series, I accept it as a part of the saga, while imo MGS5 is too bad, it should have been a spin off.
@foxhound_fox: because it's impossible for people to enjoy something that you didn't right?
on the cutscenes side I already did. It's like Kojima made an anime with a ridiculous plot with over the top scenes. It was just crazy fun to watch the fan service
On the gameplay front act 3 was the weakest chapter MGS series has ever had. Some might say the noir themed setting in that chapter and stalking the guy then having an on rails bike gameplay ending with a boss is great for a first time playthrough but the more I replay the game, the more it's flaws became apparent. The rest of the acts especially act 1 and 2 were the best it had to offer on the gameplay side. It was like playing Rambo with a cameo suit. Lots of fun sniping and sneaking around in the jungle area. It was great. Act 4 was pure fan service and it was great to see shadowmoses in modern graphics. I was blown away and it was fun trying to stealth that act with chaff grenades and fight ocelot with giant mechs and that vamp fight was good. Act 5 was somewhat weak in the beginning but the rest of it was some of the best MGS moments I've experienced.
MGS IV is not even close to the best MGS game but it certainly is not a bad game at all. I really enjoyed it. Yes it could have been so much better but what I got out of it was worth it. Proof of how much I loved it is replaying the game so much, act 1 and 2 in particular were the highlight gameplay wise and I wished he focused more on that.
Edit: MGS3 absolutely had the best boss fights of the series. MGS4 was just good in my opinion. A lot of things could have been much better but it's still a satisfying end to the series.
MGS4 sucked. Act 1 and 2 were the only decent parts of that game but I feel like that franchise has never had great gameplay until MGSV. Plus the boss fights were for the most part garbage.
The soundtrack was alright but not as memorable as the others. I think other franchises overall have better OSTs then Metal Gear.
