40/40: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker gets perfect Famitsu rating

I was able to play Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the new MGS title for Sony's PSP, at last year's Tokyo Game Show (where the game was playable for the first time). I thought it was pretty good back then, and now the Famitsu, Japan's (and probably the world's) best selling video game magazine reviewed the title and gave it a perfect total score of 40.

That 40/40 score means that four Famitsu editors rated Peace Walker with 10/10, the first time for a PSP title ever. Maker Konami plans to ship the game in the US on June 8 (see cover art above) and in Europe on June. The Japanese version will be released as early as April 29.

The last game getting this score was New Super Mario Bros. back in November 2009. For some reason, the number of perfect scores awarded by Famitsu has accelerated in the past years.

Here is a time line for all of Famitsu's 40/40-games so far:

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, for Nintendo 64)
2. Soul Calibur (1999, for Dreamcast)
3. Vagrant Story (2000, for PlayStation)
4. The Legend of Zelda – The Wind Waker (2003, for GameCube)
5. Nintendogs (2005, for the DS)
6. Final Fantasy XII (2006, for PlayStation 2)
7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008, for the Wii)
8. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008, for PlayStation 3)
9. 428: Fusasareta Shibuya de (2008, for the Wii)
10. Dragon Quest IX (2009, for the DS)
11. Monster Hunter Tri (2009, for the Wii)
12. Bayonetta (2009, for PlayStation 3/XBox 360)
13. New Super Mario Bros. (2009, for Wii)
14. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (2010, for PSP)

Why would you close your own thread? Besides, it being MGS is one of the reasons those scores are not reliable, according to Kotaku.

Fixed, you can't trust any review, they are all just opinions from gamers like you and I. But at least we get a general consensus of how well the game is.

Nintendogs.. Famitsu seem to be dishing out 10s at random these days. While I love Metal Gear Solid for its innovation, I personally believe it to be an incredibly over rated franchise. But saying that, I've yet to play Peace Walker, but if it's anything like Portable Ops, then I certainly will not be buying it.

Apparantly there is a lot of fishy going on, the guy who owns the company who publishes Famitsu appeared in Peace Walker ads. Famitsu as a whole dictates high game sales with perfect scores since their so trusted, so apparantly with sales going down in the last couple years, they started giving out a lot more perfect scores to boost sales.. pretty much debunks Famitsu forever. As much as I love Peace Walker. :P

Click on this link to a promotion site where Enterbrain's CEO (he is not the owner as you say) appears in it as a special guest. This is disturbing as this is nothing more than a conflict-of-interest in Famitsu's part, and unlike previous cases, it is much more visible.

I am surprised that people do not see this as a problem, as what if a GameSpot reviewer like Ricardo Torres or Kevin VanOrd appears in a similar promotion and as a result, GameSpot scored it 10/10? What if GiantBomb's Jeff Gertsmann appears in an Peace Walker ad and his site gave it a 10/10 score? Would gamers be concerned over conflict of interest?

I had to wonder whether I or anyone else should continue to post Famitsu scores because of the magazine's cozy relationships with major Japanese publishers.

One last thing: at least Enterbrain's CEO does not appear in a New Super Mario Wii promotional ad, or else the cows or lemmings will have a field day bashing Nintendo and the Wii!

As much as I love the MGS series, I'm finding it very hard to get hyped for the game because it's on a handheld. The game could be a million times better if it was on the PS3.

That being said, I'll still buy it day one.

Something tells me that this is the game where if it wasn't for mgs3 this is the game where he turns to the darkside possibly leading to nes mgs1 and 2. Look at all those characters...you know they died lmao..and big boss is pissed. Those aren't spoilers I haven't played the game myself but if you haven't seen them in mgs 1,2,4 something happend to them ...just sayin. outer heaven here we come ;p

Really not fair for those that don't like handhelds to not give the PSP versions a chance. I found MGS: Portable Ops to be amazing and also the PSP MGS games have much of the story involved so those hardcore MGS fans that won't play the handheld versions are missing out.

Rofl! :D I seriously consider removing my sig which has been with me for over 4 years to add that quote On Topic: I think it's safe to say that Famitsu especially should not be a trusted review source. Take a look at all the "perfect" games they have given a 10/10 score in just 2009 compared to back in the days. Did they just massively lower there standards in 2008? What's the deal. I only consider OoT a worthy 10/10 and maybe Soul Calibur out of those games anyhow in retrospect. Not to mention that the Kotaku article hits the spot I think, it wouldn't surprise me at all if there is something fishy going on over there, I doubt they are as critical of their magazines as maybe other are. Unlike Gamespot which I think was internal, this could very well have to do with upfront games and money in certain people's pockets. Metal Gear Solid is a confusing action stealth game, and so far I think none of those deserves a perfect score.

Considering that Famitsu has doubled the amount of perfect review scores it has given in it's history in 3 years, I find this, and the connections mentioned in the Kotaku article to completely invalidate this score...

Doesn't mean it won't be a good game, but I'm having trouble taking the magazine seriously now.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 (one month from now) with be the next game to receive 40/40, then Grand Turismo 5 near the end of this year. Is this a good prediction?

Famitsu in the last few years has really cheapen what 40/40 means, and the reviewers' short comments are not convincing enough on why these games deserve their scores. At least respectable Western review outlets do not engage in such conflict-of-interest nonsense which Famitsu is known to engage in and the Enterbrain CEO/promotional site connection is the icing in the cake for me.

Famitsu is garbage. That said, Peace Walker is clearly an AAA game, even if it may not score 90%+ across all reputable western sites.

I believe that they gave it 40/40 for a PSP game. It is not comparitave to a console or PC game because things such as graphics and controls are inferior on PSP than consoles so the 40/40 I believe is given for a PSP game. But still from the beta that I downloaded it needed some fixing (I can't move sideways while behing cover?)

I had Portable Ops and that was great. PSP version is quite good. But in the final version of Peace Walker can u shimmy sideways behind cover or not? Because in the beta it annoyed me that when you wanted to move you had get OUT of cover
