Lol, so any of you want to still say this game and all those others are coming this year to Switch?
No. NO! Keep them away from Metroid Prime (they wanted to anyway, hence why they developed Donkey Kong Country Returns and Tropical Freeze, the latter having triggered MP fans like crazy, lol) for a bit longer. Give it to another dev. Someone like ID would be awesome after Doom 2016. Hell, Samus Returns did great with the Lords of Shadow devs.
@jcrame10: how do you know this?
The way I see it, they released this update to tell the fans that the development quality of this game is not up to the best standards so they had to start from scratch .. if that's not a good indication that they care about the quality of their games, I don't know what is!
OK, kind of with mixed feelings. Sad that it will take much more time but very happy about Retro's involvement.
It made me laugh watching the video and then thinking of Bathesda.
I rather they take their time and we get a fucking good game out of it than a product not up to standards. This is actually good news that the original developer is taking over and I don’t see why people are shocked? No way in Hell it was coming out this year if ever in 2020. Maybe 2021 was a possibility before this news but now not till later. So the game is delayed... Guess I am just going to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in the meantime, so no big deal here and I still got Bayonetta 3 to look forward to.
@Life-is-a-Game: common sense telling me after reading the article is that the developer originally making the game was incompetent so Retro is being pulled off whatever they were doing and assigned MP4 development duties by Nintendo.
Likely whatever titles they were working on were not working. Retro Studios had a lot of turmoil with bad management over the past couple of years which is why they have not released anything but 1 port in the past 5 years. I think Nintendo took their previous in development titles and trashed them. The one thing this news does give me hope for is Metroid Prime Trilogy port for Switch is something to be looking forward to if possible.
After porting Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze, Nintendo probably had them work with Metroid Prime Trilogy and port that to Switch. They probably did a good job on porting it that they moved the project over because the rumored Bandai Namco Singapore title was not looking to progressing the way Nintendo wanted.
The bad news is that we won't see Metroid Prime 4 until 2021 at the earliest. Even then, it probably will only be a showcase title and will not play the game until late 2021. It also means we more than likely will not see anything else Retro Studios has been working on for the past 5 years save for the potential port of Metroid Prime Trilogy.
@davillain-: is there any evidence of a prime trilogy port for switch...never heard anything like that before.
I am curious to see what Nintendo is doing for this year as they as usual miss out on the big third party games (anthem, resident evil 2, kingdom hearts 3) and have no exclusives announced except for yoshi. Looks like switch is going the route of the Wii U and Wii already
Well it definitely sucks that we'll have to wait much longer than expected but honestly if the game was sub par then I don't mind at all that they restart it and give it to Retro.
As sad as this news is, I can respect that Nintendo is coming out to say the previous development was not meeting to their standards and that they will not release the game until it does. It goes to show Nintendo actually gives a shit about their properties and they'd rather not half-ass the insane hype surrounding it.
This is actually EXACTLY what they did with Breath of the Wild. Do you guys remember when Nintendo delayed BotW and their reasons was because they were determined to make it as perfect as possible? We might be getting the same treatment with Metroid Prime 4.
MP4 is definitely my most hyped game this gen, but I feel content to know that by time it comes out it will be worth it because the developer's are making sure it is.
... The one thing this news does give me hope for is Metroid Prime Trilogy port for Switch is something to be looking forward to if possible....
I would love a port to switch with Joycon gyro controls for aiming without the Wii sensor bar. Been hoping for this ever since I saw the pointer reveal on the right joycon.

MP4 and Bayo 3 were never announced as targeting 2019. Very few people were sure that they would make it. So no, this changes noting and I bet my account that Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion 3, Daemon Ex Machina, and Fire Emblem Three Houses will all release this year. If even one misses, I'll delete my account.
Something something Sony and Microsoft announce games too early. *eye roll*
The main difference between Sony and Nintendo is Nintendo gives updates well in advance and makes an apology when they believe the production will extend the original release window.
Sony on the other hand...Year by year, with each E3 passing by....Where is The Last Guardian? *Crickets*
Somehow, somewhere, someone is going to spin this into a negative story.
OP already did that. He's taking this as proof that most of Nintendo's announced games will be delayed, even Pokemon which hasn't had a game delayed in well over a decade.
Actually, I just realized something. If Retro is taking over, that likely means whatever they were working on before this is most likely nearly finished (or cancelled). In that case, that means that we should finally hear about what they've been working on soon!
Well the good news is that we’ll probably be getting a better game. The bad news is that we’re going to be waiting longer for said game. Anyway I fully expect a Metroid Prime trilogy for the Switch this year to help ease the wait plus there’s still going to be a lot of games that’ll keep me satisfied with my Switch.

C'mon, man. take the L. Besides, The Last Guardian actually came out. Did Nintendo ever officially announce they cancelled Project H.A.M.M.E.R. to their customers?
this is either a hype generating tactic ("oooh they are not messing around...this has to be good") or whoever was working on it made a craptacular disaster. i mean they released other M and that was awful sooo.....wow. it must have been around 2 years into development so thats a big point to just chuck it in at.
i'm also concerned that Kensuke Tanabe is involved. most of other Ms problems are on him, not the developer. I hope he delivers, i really do. as for retro: on the one hand a lot of people who worked on prime have since left. on the other hand the donkey kong games they made were well received (i have yet to play them....i must fix that) so they clearly still know how to make a game. so a it'll be interesting to see how that goes.
still it's good that nintendo are not putting out things they are not happy with. the prime series is well respected and with good reason (they are all brilliant.).
the only thing is this may no longer be a switch title but a title for its successor instead (perhaps a lunch title). it's 2019 now: 3 years development (which is pretty normal for big games): 2021. the switch will pretty much be 5 years old. it's hard to say mind without knowing nintendos plans but the switch could be on its home run by then. it would make one hell of a send off but it may not be the best thing for the game.
anywho im rambling. disappointing that they have had to start again but i would prefer a great game to a punctual one. I was hoping for it this year (never formally declared as a 2019 title of course) but i can wait. no shortage of games to play in the meantime.
I wonder what the switches big title will be this year then? Bayonetta 3? Animal corssing (ooooh id love an animal crossing on the switch)?

The bold part. I said if all possible for a Metroid Prime Trilogy port, which would help ease the bad news for the meantime. I doubt it be that hard to port it for Switch. There's still Bayonetta 3 to look forward to and as bad news as this may sound but I don't think Metroid Prime 4 was gonna be ready for prime time this year, I never expected the game to be release this year anyways, so this hardly bother me anyways.
Let's not forget Metroid Prime went through development hell, but turned out great. Hopefully MP4 will too.

At least Nintendo had the balls to say it. That, along with Retro being back in charge, are the only positives to this news. Sony & MS, not so much, especially MS cancelling Scalebound.

An IP that never launched back in the Wii days that absolutely no one hyped. Did you just step out of a time capsule? Yes The Last Guardian FINALLY came out, after just about everyone gave up on it launching and the belief it was vaporware, and then the game was met with mixed reviews rather than being that glowing swan song everyone thought it was going to be. The simple fact is: Sony handled their PR poorly. They will quietly brush things under the rug and act like they don't exist, just like they did with The Last Guardian.
I remember when they finally said they were releasing The Last Guardian, people were just frazzled and were like, "oh, so it is coming out after all?"
You absolutely cannot compare Sony's bad PR to Nintendo giving an update well in advance that the development will take longer than expected.

Animal Crossing and Pokemon Gen 8, both confirmed for 2019.

Ah the three stages of goal post moving: Deny, dismiss and revision. Yes, The Last Guardian came out to an awful, awful Metascore of 82. Which is PERFECTLY fine for a Nintendo game, but not a Sony one, gotcha. So you're saying that's it's okay for you to use the time capsule, but no one else can?
This post boils down to. "I'll excuse it for Nintendo, but not Sony". Using an example of a game that actually released. This is some top notch spinning, champ. I'm impressed.
So the development is restarted from the beginning and Retro studios isn't working on a new I.P........
That is the worst possible outcome to me lol. Oh well.

You are the goal post mover here. You are the one in denial that Sony has had poor PR on what should have been one of their biggest game releases.
The major difference between a game like The Last Guardian and a game like H.A.M.M.E.R. is The Last Guardian was HYPED. No one gave a shit about H.A.M.M.E.R. You don't hear anyone these days going "Boy, if only H.A.M.M.E.R. came out back in the day." What you're doing is reaching for straws by targeting a cancelled project no one gave a shit about in the first place.
Metroid Prime and The Last Guardian are perfectly comparable considering both of them are highly revered and demanded among their respective fan bases.
It turns out that Sony handled their PR with TLG absolutely poorly. Their handling with the game was so poor when the game inevitably came out, people had more nerves to pick with the game than actually praise it.
@davillain-: wouldn’t MP3 be hard to port because of the controls? Same reason people say Mario galaxy and Skyward Sword will never get ported
Shame really, I’d love to play SS with normal controls. That Switch pro controller is nice.
MP3 doesn't use any major motion controls. Aiming can be done with the right stick or gyro controls, and everything else can be a button. Switch has all of the motion controls Wii does except IR pointing anyway, and it's waaaaaaaaaay more accurate.
@techhog89: I think @DaVillain- just told me twice Bayonetta 3 is coming this year so he’s not worried much about MP4
Well... that's on him lol. There's been noting to really indicate that. Not that Bayo 3 is a system seller anyway.
Not worried about Switch this year, especially after learning that Yoshi has been finished for over a month

C'mon, dude. You're doing everything in your power to absolve Nintendo and avoiding admitting that they announced the game too early. Publishers jump the gun and crap goes wrong sometimes. Is that too much to admit? You have completely remolded history in order to excuse Nintendo and demonize everyone else.
Great , now we wont see this game till 2021 if they're starting from scratch >_>
Well can we at least get a remaster of Metroid Prime 1-3 while we wait..
im sure they dont need Retro for this, just get any dev to increase the resolution.

I don't think it's that they announced the game too soon, it's that the game needs more time than originally anticipated. As a fan of Nintendo, I don't praise everything they do. I don't give a shit about Yoshi or Kirby games. I don't give a shit about cardboard or Amiibo's. I wouldn't touch their online service with a ten foot pole. As a sensible fan, I can tell you Nintendo absolutely does NOT do everything supreme; I will give them credit when it's due. As for personally being a huge Metroid fan (it's my favorite Nintendo franchise), I can't help but respect Nintendo gave me an update on the game's development. I would much rather have that amazing Metroid game than one that's sub-par, and if Nintendo needs more time to make that perfect game, I am more than happy to let them take more time.
I'd rather Nintendo keep me updated than pushing themselves in the shadows for nearly a decade and stripping away my hopes the game would come out at all. I don't think Sony is particularly bad with their releases much of the time, but The Last Guardian was a **** up with their PR.
