Yeah, its from a Playstation Magazine, so it could be biased, but anyways, its seems definitely great.

Playstation magazine lulz. That's like asking a cat to rate catching mice, or asking a fat person to score hamburgers out of ten.Nick_D7
Who's better to rate catching mice than cats?
Who's better to rate hambugers than a fat kid who loves hamburgers?
Think about it?

Not the cat and not the fat kid.
When there's an emotional connection, alot of the time it kills objectivity.
Reviewers should be as neutral as possible.
For instance, I would never trust a Metal Gear Solid fan to rate a MGS game. They are an interested party, as is PlayStation magazine.

I disagree. MGS4 was made for MGS fans. That's why a fourth installment in the series even exists--because there are so many people who love MGS. I would not trust a FPS-loving reviewer with no experience in the MGS world to tell me how good or bad MGS4 seems... I'd much rather ask an MGS fan for an opinion regarding the game...

Would you take advice about stock car from a guy who just drives vehicles, or the guy who obsess with stock cars?

For you personally that might be the case, but for the average consumer, the reviewer should be neutral. Interested parties will almost always give a biased opinion. And honestly, the neutral review is probably closer to the truth. With fans, emotions always get in the way.
That goes the same for people that show an open hatred towards MGS. They'd be the wrong people to review the game.
In a strange way, MGS fanboys could potentially be too harsh on the game depending on the fanboy. With some fanboys, if they're even the slightest bit dissapointed, they'll bash the game in an unobjective fashion.
I stand by my statements: Fans are horrible for an objective opinion. If somebody wanted an opinion on a Madonna album, I would tell them to go elsewhere, because I'm bound to rate the thing too high being a fan.

Depends on what I'm asking.
If I'm asking a general question about stock cars, I would go with the obsessed guy.
If I'm asking about the coolness of stock cars, why would I ask the obsessed guy when I all ready what he's going to say?

okay... If I want any advice, I want it from the guy "who knows what he is talking about", but that's just me.

I disagree on that. Hardcore MGS junkies are the last people i'll ask. I have a hard time trusting a review about a MGS game from someone named like, "Kojima iz God" or who says stuff like, "MGS4 > My life" like 2 years prior to release. Thats an opinion catered to the hardcore MGS junkie. I'd rather ask someone who has never played a MGS game what they think since I feel like they won't have all the hype and fanboyism built in. If the game is great, they won't hesitate to say so, but the same thing happens with flaws.
Fanboys are too extreme. Its either, "11/10 regardless of reality" or "they changed Snake's socks to white instead of black, 1/10... totally destroys the experience."

You would ask somebody who thinks stock cars are cool if they are cool? What kind of sense does that make?
Also, your above post doesn't apply here, because MGS4 fans don't know more what they are talking about per se, they just have more of an emotional attachment.
For a review, all the reviewer has to have to have is a knowledge of is what makes a quality game and apply those criteria to the finished product. A MGS fan is not any more qualified to do that than anybody else, and their rose-colored way of looking at the series might distort the picture.
Also, what in the world is wrong with a neutral reviewer?

he said fans, not hardcore MGS junkies. he didn't say fanboys.
and if the reviewer should not have played previous MGS games, is it okay for him to dock off points because he didn't understand what was happening or didn't get the inside jokes?

No, I would ask what makes stock cars cool? The key is asking the right questions. I know that's something most people can't do, but that's another story... I find nothing wrong with impartial reviews, it just that, they really are not impartial.

Mordred19
Regardless, a neutral reviewer is by nature more likely to be objectively than a fan.
As for your second question, sometimes: yes. Docking for not getting inside jokes would be very suspect, because an inside joke would not usually detract from anything gameplay or story related.
But docking points for not understanding the story would be valid in some cases. With books, it is bad series writing when an installment can't stand on its own two legs or when the story can't be understood without the aid of the others.
The story should be coherent and understandable regardless of its position in the series.

Fair points, but I don't think any of these anologies are applicable.
MGS fans are not neccesarily experts on the game. I know several people who are in love with MGS who couldn't even tell you the first thing about the story, and several people that think its a mixed bag and can articulate the story very well.
Fans have more of an emotional attachment, not neccesarily expertise. And with a game, I don't think expertise is needed.
Also, what's the benefit of going to a PlayStation magazine for a review on a PlayStation game? Do PlayStation games play any differently than 360 games? Not really. Why would they be more qualified to review a PlayStation game? Just because they like the console? No way.

Not to be rude, but you're a level 21. By now you should to always link a link you post, no exceptions. I'm assuming you don't know how in HTMl, so that's why I posted the above.

Not to be rude, but this post contributed nothing to the thread, and you're a level 34. By now you should ALWAYS add something to the thread.
But anyway, glad to see it's getting good reviews.
Cool a 10/10 for a big Playstation exclusive game from a exclusive Playstation magazine.
Haee
YaY, like when all the 360 fanboys post good reviews from OXM in system wars then brag about it and flame anyone who tries to discredit it, but that's ok, and this is not:D

Nope this isnt a case of 360 fanboys posting a review from OXM and then bragging about it in System Wars, this is a case of the cows growing nuts over a game that got a good review from PSM.
I couldnt care less if OXM gave Halo a perfect ten or if PC gamer gave Crysis the highest score and I certainly wouldnt stop for PSM either.
reviews don't matter.
It's Metal Gear Solid 4.
That is all you should need to know.

That fits the case well. I doubt that MGS4 will change people's opinion about the series if the other games didnt but its all cool anyway, its a game made for the fans.
