Okay, im gonna beat down the myth that MGS is not a system seller.
First, lets look at sales and the game's postion in sales:
MGS1 6.6 mill 7th highest selling game on the ps1
MGS2 7 mill 6th highest selling game on the ps2. The 5 games that beat it were 3 GTAs and the 2 GTs. Everyone knows what juggernauts they are and being second to them is quite a feet.
MGS3 3.7 mill 9th highest selling game on the ps2.
Take in mind that anything that sells over 500,000 copies is considered a hit.
Okay, so every MGS game has been in the top ten of best selling on its respective console. Now lets look at scores, Im not including any of the re-releases:
Gamespot 8.5 Gamerankings 92.7%
Gamespot 9.6 Gamerankings 94.9%
Gamespot 8.7 Gamrerankings 91.6%
Now, lets talk about the sales and scores combined. As you can see, the sales kind of reflect the scores. MGS2 had the highest, with MGS3 the lowest.
MGS1: This was a revolutionary game. Never before had voice acting, story, graphics, gameplay, and a musical score come to blend so perfectly in a videogame. Most people call it one of the best games of all time. IGN called it the best PS1 game. It is on the top 100 games of all time on numerous sites. Even System Wars polled it as the best game of the ps1/n64 era(It would be awesome if someone gave me the link) It was critisized for its short length though.
MGS2: Another revolutionary game. It was THE first game of the generation to feature such brilliant graphics. It refined the gameplay of MGS1 and introduced numerous things. Critics hailed it as a reason to get the ps2.
MGS3: Even though it was a great game it was by no means revolutionary. It introduced new things but pretty much all the new features except CQC were critisized. The graphics were great but by no means ahead of the rest of the pack.
Okay now, lets talk hype.
MGS1 was hyped a lot. Everyone was going crazy for it.
MGS2 was hyped like crazy, it was always the showcase of the floor. It was first next gen game to show such amazing graphics.
MGS3 had barely no hype at all. It was late in the ps2s gen and wasnt doing much new. It wasnt revolutionary.
MGS4 is recieving crazy hype. Every single gameshow its on, it steals the floor. Magazines keep touting it. You know how much free publicity this game gets just because of the "will this be ported to 360" debate. MGS4 has BY FAR recieved the most hype out of all MGS games.
You might have noticed a pattern above, more hype more sales(duh). So MGS4 will sell.
Honestly, how many times have you heard, Im buying a ps3 for mgs4, ill buy a ps3 around the time mgs4 comes out, only reason I want a ps3 is for MGS4. Ive heard it hundreds of times.
Not only that, but MGS4 has been somewhat casualized to appeal to a broader market.
Also remember MGS2 moved over 2 mill copies when ps2 sales were still below 10 milland by the end moved 7 mill(thats a lot)
And now the System Seller debate. MGS2 moved ps2s. It gave it a boost in the beginning to get it started. Gears of War moved 360s, didnt it sell like 2 mill 360s?
MGS4 will do the same that GEOW and MGS2 did for the 360 and ps2.
