Okay, im gonna beat down the myth that MGS is not a system seller.

First, lets look at sales and the game's postion in sales:

MGS1 6.6 mill 7th highest selling game on the ps1

MGS2 7 mill 6th highest selling game on the ps2. The 5 games that beat it were 3 GTAs and the 2 GTs. Everyone knows what juggernauts they are and being second to them is quite a feet.

MGS3 3.7 mill 9th highest selling game on the ps2.

Take in mind that anything that sells over 500,000 copies is considered a hit.

Okay, so every MGS game has been in the top ten of best selling on its respective console. Now lets look at scores, Im not including any of the re-releases:

Gamespot 8.5 Gamerankings 92.7%

Gamespot 9.6 Gamerankings 94.9%

Gamespot 8.7 Gamrerankings 91.6%

Now, lets talk about the sales and scores combined. As you can see, the sales kind of reflect the scores. MGS2 had the highest, with MGS3 the lowest.

MGS1: This was a revolutionary game. Never before had voice acting, story, graphics, gameplay, and a musical score come to blend so perfectly in a videogame. Most people call it one of the best games of all time. IGN called it the best PS1 game. It is on the top 100 games of all time on numerous sites. Even System Wars polled it as the best game of the ps1/n64 era(It would be awesome if someone gave me the link) It was critisized for its short length though.

MGS2: Another revolutionary game. It was THE first game of the generation to feature such brilliant graphics. It refined the gameplay of MGS1 and introduced numerous things. Critics hailed it as a reason to get the ps2.

MGS3: Even though it was a great game it was by no means revolutionary. It introduced new things but pretty much all the new features except CQC were critisized. The graphics were great but by no means ahead of the rest of the pack.

Okay now, lets talk hype.

MGS1 was hyped a lot. Everyone was going crazy for it.

MGS2 was hyped like crazy, it was always the showcase of the floor. It was first next gen game to show such amazing graphics.

MGS3 had barely no hype at all. It was late in the ps2s gen and wasnt doing much new. It wasnt revolutionary.

MGS4 is recieving crazy hype. Every single gameshow its on, it steals the floor. Magazines keep touting it. You know how much free publicity this game gets just because of the "will this be ported to 360" debate. MGS4 has BY FAR recieved the most hype out of all MGS games.

You might have noticed a pattern above, more hype more sales(duh). So MGS4 will sell.

Honestly, how many times have you heard, Im buying a ps3 for mgs4, ill buy a ps3 around the time mgs4 comes out, only reason I want a ps3 is for MGS4. Ive heard it hundreds of times.

Not only that, but MGS4 has been somewhat casualized to appeal to a broader market.

Also remember MGS2 moved over 2 mill copies when ps2 sales were still below 10 milland by the end moved 7 mill(thats a lot)

And now the System Seller debate. MGS2 moved ps2s. It gave it a boost in the beginning to get it started. Gears of War moved 360s, didnt it sell like 2 mill 360s?

MGS4 will do the same that GEOW and MGS2 did for the 360 and ps2.

Not bad. I'm sure there are other factors to consider, but I like your arguments.

One thing though is that you didn't provide details on how many consoles were sold when MGS1, 2, and 3 were released. Sounds to me like the games sold well, but I'd like to know how many consoles were already in homes before and after each game was released.

I tried to get those figures but couldnt find any. It would be helpful if anyone can provide me with them and ill edit them into the main post.

Only thing I found out is that MGS2 sold over 2 mill while the ps2 fanbase was still less than 10mill. Very broad I know, but thats all I got:(

Halo 3 has sold over 5 million copies worldwide, and it hasn't even been out for half a year...

Do you really think that MGS4 will be a system-seller for a $600 console? Very few people in America have ever heard of Metal Gear, and yet Cows still call it a system seller.

Let me remind you that a game can only be a system seller when there is overwhelming media attention towards it. Metal Gear Solid games are notorious for being low on advertising. MGS4 won't change anything.

MGS4 is already getting featured in ps3 ads and it still isnt due for atleast 4-6 months. I think this game will be advertised like crazy.

Yeah, in PS3 ads. Until there are commercials on Cable television for Metal Gear Solid 4, then we can talk.

System seller is too broad of a word. There are games that sell systems..but there are gamwes that sell systems to a more wider audience over a period of time. MGS4 will certainly not be the latter..meaning it will boost PS3 sales by 200-300% on it's first month. That's it.

Well, for one, it's coming out in 4-6 months :P. Only games like Halo can advertise like that. Yes, I agree, Halo is probably the most popular game out this gen, but that isn't to say that MGS4 won't be a system seller. The fact that Sony is even placing MGS4 in their commercials is a bold statement and proof that they have high hopes for it. I think also foreshadows a huge MGS4 marketing campaign in the future. I'm almost 100% sure that a lot more people will know about MGS by the time it's released.

PS3 is not $600...

Every person I run into that has a PS3, I ask them what they think about MGS4, and even if they haven't playe the previous ones, they say they are excited for its release. I am serious.

MGS3/Substance sold 50% less combined than what MGS2 sold by itself not include Substance. That is all you need to know as far as where the sales are going for the series.

Id say around 4 mill in the first 2 months and then it will gradually sell for a total of around 7-8 mill.

That's a lot of words TC. I know it's a system seller for one simple reason: anytime anything, and I mean ANYTHING, comes along saying it's going multi-plat, it's a major story. Xbox owners want this game and they don't want to have to buy a PS3 to get it. The simple truth is a great many 360 owners will become PS3 owners when MGS comes out.

Mgs4 wont do what gears of war did, sorry.deavincalhoun

You're right, it'll do more. And MGS4 is but one of the many IPs coming for SOny in 08.

Factor in Japan and MGS4 will sell more than any game to come out this gen. That's right...anygame including Wii games. Japan, the USA, and Europe will all own this game. Halo didn't do that and neither did Galaxy but MGS4 will.

Quote me on it.

Gran Turismo sales are ridiculous and the only adverstising they get are weird commercials that don't even show gameplay...

MGS3 was the second MGS installment for the PS2, thats why it didn't have the same impact. Kojima was smart enough not to make a second one for the original PS. When MGS2 was getting ready to be released, it was one of the most anticipated games, if not the most, in a year that was absolutely stocked with amazing ones.

MGS4 has similarly been anticipated this gen, if not more so.

Besides, a lot of players were so completely turned off by MGS2 that they didn't even bother with MGS3, despite the reviews from critics and the fans. Hell, read some posts on here, and you'll see that a lot of players didn't play 3 simply because of 2.

This game will be one of the greatest of this year, probably of this gen. Is it a guaranteed GOTY? No, of course not, but it has just a good of a chance as any other game in 08.

The PS2 had 20 million consoles out when MGS2 was released.

It was also released in November of 2001(a holladay season). and was Advertized out the arse in America for over a year after it's release

Then on top of that, the Game was dislike by many casual games (who didn't know what MGS was and bought it due to hype) do to it's store telling style ie long cutsene.

The proof is in the fact that MGS2 was so critsized buy so many non-hardcore gamers and the sequal didn't do near what MGS2 did.

Not every PS3 owner will buy a copy of MGS4 :o.

Now I like MGS and is oneof the few reasons I bought a PS3 but I realize that it wont move no more then 500.000 console on the first month of release. Hell, I think GTA4 will sale more PS3s then MGS4(even though it's multi-plat).

MGS4 will sell reasonably good, but it won't outsell Halo 3... saying that is pure craziness.

Metal Gear games have never sold very well. Hardly anybody knows about Metal Gear...

Metal Gear Solid 4 will sell very well, probably have better than Gears of War sales. It might even eclipse Halo 3 when this gen is over. :P GTAIV is going to bring the game market to new heights this year!!

You can't use that as an excuse. Hell Halo 2 was the 2nd installment on the XBOX and it outsold Halo by 3 million copies. Halo 3 is the 3rd installment of the series and it will out sell Halo 2 and could very well outsell Halo and Halo 2 combined.

As far as it being the greatest game of the year, generation, etc, you should have said IMO.

Mgs4 wont do what gears of war did, sorry.deavincalhoun

Gears of War wasn't a system seller. MGS is though, just like Halo is.

I didn't know the PS3 was $600, I must get a discount for living on mars. So wait even without hype the game sold well, itf it gets even a little what will happen @_@

Fine, if you want to play it that way, the PS3 is $500-600, but it doesn't change anything. You know nothing about the history of the Metal Gear series. The Metal Gear games have never sold well, and MGS4 won't change much. It isn't going to be a system seller.

Good for you. Unlike you however, I care more about the quality of a game than how many copies of itself or the PS3 it will sell. From what I've seen MGS4 seems to be ripping off Double Agent while adding weird gameplay mechanics like humping the ground. Not too exciting. And the usual ridiculous nonsense story, like giant cyborg lizards taking a coordinated dump and sounding like cows. WTF.

They ripped off Splinter Cell, the inferior clone of Metal Gear, because whiny Splinter Cell fanboys like you thought the gameplay in MGS was too difficult.

Ironically, it seems Kojima Productions is making twice the game a pathetic Splinter Cell game will ever be.

Oh, and I'd rather take giant cyborg lizards than some bald idiot with three glowing lights above his head that manages to slip past guards because he's in the shadows. Now that is "WTF" worthy.

You must be kidding all 3 games have sold 4 million +. If MGS2 selling over 8 million isn't selling well then what is? I don't what to say, you do't even have a real argument.

MGS2 sold over 8 million? Go look at the current sales, my friend. I recall it selling about 6.2 million.

MGS3 sold roughly 3 million.

MGS sold about 5 million.

Compared to Halo 3 and Halo 2, you might want to rethink what a "system seller" really is.

You don't know anything about current gaming at all it seems. The PS3 is $399 and also it seems you don't know much about metal gear sales history either. The info isn't even that far away from you.

Fine, my bad. But who the hell would buy the dumbed down PS3? It can't even play PS2 or PS1 games.

And that news of MGS2 is nothing compared to what Halo 3 or Halo 2 sold within the first few weeks.

Why do lemmings be so silly sometimes. Is halo on the PS3? Nope. Is MGS on the PS3? Yep.. MGS has always done well without ever needing extreme media hype(this is where most consumers learn about a game), halo on the other hand.. yea.... I bought a ps2 because I saw MGS, it still is one of the best games for the system and a PS3 would be well worth the money to play this great franchise again.

P.S if you use halo has an example of a system seller then NOTHING is a system seller but halo....... You have to remember no game in history gets has hyped as this. If sony hype MGS to the be the best thing since slice bread, lock off a street and have a giant metal gear walking around then you might have a point if he didn't sell well, that it's not a system seller.

Yeah, in PS3 ads. Until there are commercials on Cable television for Metal Gear Solid 4, then we can talk. princeofshapeir

Uh, they have been on cable television.
