Before playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, I wasn't really into gaming and didn't think of it as something for mature audiences. However, when I realized that the game was about mature subject matter, such as nuclear warfare, worldwide information control, genetic engineering, and other similarly serious topics, my view of gaming made a complete one hundred and eighty degree turn, especially when the story in which these topics were covered was conveyed by cinematically styled cutscenes. Playing an MGS game was a double dose of pleasure, because I got to play a video game with very fun gameplay as well as watch a quality directed and written film.

However, it seems that this signature aspect of the series will be dampened in the upcoming installment of the franchise, Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain. In light of the criticism Guns of the Patriots received for having cutscenes as long as one hour long, Hideo Kojima, director of the series, has decided to lessen the role they will play in unraveling the story of MGS. Here is what he is quoted as saying in an article:

If you think of Metal Gear Solids 1-4 as movies, [The Phantom Pain] is going to be like a TV series with episodes. (Each episode breaks down into a non-linear missions with that eventually) come together to complete the story we have designed.Hideo Kojima

How do you guys feel about this? I am personally disappointed. The cinematically styled cutscenes are a very important and unique aspect to Metal Gear Solid, in my opinion, and I enjoy watching them. I'm pretty sure this game will still be awesome, but it won't feel the same to me. :(

That's kind of a bummer.. I love MGS4. Hopefully the storytelling is just being better paced or integrated into the gameplay instead of being lessend.

Forget that. Seeing through walls, health regeneration and slow-mo already killed it.

Barely any stealth.

I for one have always enjoyed the cutscenes in Metal Gear, so this is no celebration for me, I guess. I enjoyed every minute of MGS4's filmtrilogy-length cutscenes.

Sounds like the game is getting some serious westernization. It still looks really good but im a little bit worried about it.

From the IGN video it looks they have the combat mechanics locked down, but I want to see more stealth mechanics.  Hopefully there will be more in the near future.

And I never minded the cutscenes since the messages they wanted to tell was interesting enough to keep my attention, what people wanted is just more gameplay. :)

MGS was always an action game. Did you forget fist fighting a cyborg ninja? Did you forget shooting down a jet harrier with rockets? Did you forget the metal gear on metal gear battle? Do you remember fighting the fat bomber on roller skates? Making the action more refined sounds like an obvious answer to me. I don't understand why you people react so negatively to making the game better.

Have you seen any of the trailers for this game? I'm sure the game will have lots of opportunity's to info dump you with cutscenes, but the game will have moments where it can tell it's story through gameplay as well.

Less cutscenes, 'actionised' gameplay, no David Hayter. Seems no series is averse to major change.

I remember the story and action sequences a lot more then the stealth. Ever since MGS3, the series has had a "play it how you want" approach by no longer punishing you for not using stealth.

Kojima said the same exact thing about MGS4 and look what happened lol.

This basically just confirms even more cutscenes.  I'm not even being sarcastic, this is how the man works.

This is like the lead up to MGS4 all over again.  They announce that there will be less cutscenes.  People rage and say "but this is not MGS!".  The game launches with even more cutscenes and they are longer than usual.  People b*tch about too many cutscenes.

Yay.

There is a strong chance Hayter is in it as Solid Snake. The events of MGS5 aren't that far away from the first MG game.

Disappointed. The cutscenes were some of my favourite parts. MGS2 is what got me hooked onto the series. MGS4 got it perfect with a good mix of gameplay and cutscenes(besides Act 3) why change it when MGS4 was critically acclaimed is beyond me.

That's a good thing.  It means they'll have to flesh out the stealth gameplay more.  The MGS games have always had solid gameplay but the stealth aspect isn't as robust as other series (*coughThiefcoughouh*).

Getting caught goes in to a bullet time like mode. Health regeneration allows making mistakes and run n gun gameplay. Seeing through walls was great in TLOU because it provided you a way to note where enemies are due to not being a stealth game. Some enemies were instant kills. I don't think this has a proper place in MGS. I don't think those qualify as 'fleshing out the stealth gameplay' as much as they do 'fleshing out the action gameplay'. And I'm sure some people are thinking 'if you don't like it don't use those modes', however I am sure the entire game has been worked around these changes and not using it will give you a pretty poor and frustrating experience. I fully expect gameplay punishment for not taking advantage of these 'features'. Think MGS4 and the Octocam (but the Octocam actually worked well in the stealth gameplay).

Oh. damn.

Still, I'd say the only game that had a solid balance between cutscenes and gameplay (that I've played) is the third one.  The first wasn't too bad but 2 was just insane with some of its cutscenes.  I'm glad there'll be a slightly larger focus on gameplay.

[QUOTE="bloodlust_101"] Getting caught goes in to a bullet time like mode. Think MGS4 and the Octocam (but the Octocam actually worked well in the stealth gameplay).princeofshapeir

Oh. damn.

Still, I'd say the only game that had a solid balance between cutscenes and gameplay (that I've played) is the third one.  The first wasn't too bad but 2 was just insane with some of its cutscenes.  I'm glad there'll be a slightly larger focus on gameplay.

2 probably had the most fleshed-out gameplay though, especially for its time

Yep.

I think 3 had the best.  It had a good amount of areaas to explore, and options, while 2 was just loaded out the ass with cutscenes.  IIRC, the scenes before the last boss took something like an hour and a half. That's completely insane.  That;s like, a feature length movie.

I think MGS 3 hit the sweet spot. Masterpiece.

Less cutscenes, 'actionised' gameplay, no David Hayter. Seems no series is averse to major change.

Star650

There is a strong chance Hayter is in it as Solid Snake. The events of MGS5 aren't that far away from the first MG game.

Good point, I haven't thought about that. :)

[quote="Hideo Kojima"]If you think of Metal Gear Solids 1-4 as movies, [The Phantom Pain] is going to be like a TV series with episodes. (Each episode breaks down into a non-linear missions with that eventually) come together to complete the story we have designed.BluRayHiDef

How do you guys feel about this? I am personally disappointed. The cinematically styled cutscenes are a very important and unique aspect to Metal Gear Solid, in my opinion, and I enjoy watching them. I'm pretty sure this game will still be awesome, but it won't feel the same to me. :(

Look, some people need a good story to draw them into a game and I won't knock'em for it, But if you think leaching off movies is the best way to deliver a story then why the hell do you play video games ?
