Before playing Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, I wasn't really into gaming and didn't think of it as something for mature audiences. However, when I realized that the game was about mature subject matter, such as nuclear warfare, worldwide information control, genetic engineering, and other similarly serious topics, my view of gaming made a complete one hundred and eighty degree turn, especially when the story in which these topics were covered was conveyed by cinematically styled cutscenes. Playing an MGS game was a double dose of pleasure, because I got to play a video game with very fun gameplay as well as watch a quality directed and written film.
However, it seems that this signature aspect of the series will be dampened in the upcoming installment of the franchise, Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain. In light of the criticism Guns of the Patriots received for having cutscenes as long as one hour long, Hideo Kojima, director of the series, has decided to lessen the role they will play in unraveling the story of MGS. Here is what he is quoted as saying in an article:
If you think of Metal Gear Solids 1-4 as movies, [The Phantom Pain] is going to be like a TV series with episodes. (Each episode breaks down into a non-linear missions with that eventually) come together to complete the story we have designed.Hideo Kojima
How do you guys feel about this? I am personally disappointed. The cinematically styled cutscenes are a very important and unique aspect to Metal Gear Solid, in my opinion, and I enjoy watching them. I'm pretty sure this game will still be awesome, but it won't feel the same to me. :(
