What are the chances of the next Xbox console having Blueray functionality?

Depends on how big games will be next gen. We wont get a graphical leap similar to PS2-to-PS3, so maybe it wouldn't be ABSOLUTELY necessary? I still think they should go ahead and add it. It'll be cheap by then, and provide some convenience.
Plus the scratch resistant coating makes keeping games in mint condition easy as hell. And with buying used Blu-ray games/movies you never have to worry about any defects. I would like it for my XBOX 720 (or whatever the heck it'll be called).
*Bluray. Also 50/50. Microsoft probably wouldn't do it, they still haven't given us free online or even access to the internet on the 360 yet.NiKvaFree Live Gold is primarily up to the Xbox consumer to decide. MS will change it when people stop paying $60 a year (which would be fuk*ing amazing).
About as good as your spelling.
It's Blu-rayAnywho. I think it's possible.

I would say probable. I don't think pure DD is ready yet, and I really don't think next gen games are going to fit so easily on a DVD unless compression techniques really advance.

Unfortunately, most American consumers have neither principles nor restraint. Otherwise U.S. households wouldn't have nearly $15 trillion in debt, and I'm not talking about government debt either.

I bet if everyone did stop paying for live that they would get rid or reduce the prices. Unfortunately, that won't happen :([QUOTE="NiKva"]*Bluray. Also 50/50. The American consumer. Oh we'll buy it all right. We'll buy anything with a price tag :P. Special $25 a log birch wood from Minnesota that burns the same as other wood? Sure, I'll buy 1,000 of them because they look pretty. SMH...

Full DD won't ever happen.
Zero. It could have blu-ray though.

That was funny but it probably won't. I've heard that blu-ray was something exclusive by Sony. Then again, I only read half of things anyway, news are too big and life is too short.
They would just probably go hd-dvdp4s2p0
That'll be going backwards, & will actually be more expensive to adopt than it is for Blu-Ray. No way will that happen.

Sony doesn't exactly own Blu-Ray, nor did they made it.
it wont because they are still bum hurt over hd dvd. They put in digital media saying " bluray quailty" whitch is bs.

Not if they only intend to do if for disc space. They dont sell HDDVDs anymore, but putting in a drive would still be cheaper since its a dead tech now. Either that or a variation of the HDDVD, like VMD. The disc format doesnt have to be a standard to be used.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versatile_Multilayer_Disc
Still bum hurt? You do know that MS merely supported HDDVD, and didnt own or invest in it right? Also, they made money from both formats?it wont because they are still bum hurt over hd dvd. They put in digital media saying " bluray quailty" whitch is bs.

Dang, out of all the things I've been chewed out for, this has to be the worst. I've been forever shamed. Now I don't even want the next Xbox to have Blu-ray functionality. It would just remind of the gross humiliation I experienced on an internet forum. Heil Grammar Nazis.
I consider it likely. After all, the reasons against its inclusion on the 360 no longer apply:
It's no longer expensive
It's transfer speeds exceed DVD
It exists :P
Fanboys seem to think Sony and MS act like... fanboys do. They couldn't care less. If MS believes they need a larger physical media next gen, then BluRay is a cost effective answer that also benefits the end user with additional media functionality. Sounds like a winner.
It would be better that they use a new disc format for the nextbox, that way it can be a real competition in the console market. Why would microsoft even care for the competition with sony? Their real competition is with Apple. I would imagine Apple's console now. INTRODUCING, THE iCONSOLE
no idea what the chances are.
they could get by with DVD again. although they'd have to make HDDs standard(their biggest mistake this gen) on every Xbox and provide a large amount of storage capacity. the real downside is that the Xbox wouldn't really look like a console anymore since plug-and-play would be violated by the full, mandatory installs. that just makes it a poor alternative to a PC.
as for movie playback, Netflix is sufficient for someone like me and it seems like it's ousting physical media anyways.

Sure, Sony wasn't the only company behind the invention of blu-ray, but it was a major part. Sony is the one who revealed the first blu-ray prototypes, The first bluray player, and the first bluray movies.

Sony was just part of the BDA. The "Blu-ray Disc founder group" was started on May 20, 2002 by MIT and nine leading electronic companies: Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Thomson, LG (Lucky GoldStar) Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp, and Samsung.Sony did NOT invent blu-ray so...its possible[QUOTE="T-Aldous"][QUOTE="FashionFreak"]

so what?
I highly doubt their rivalry is great enough that Sony would keep MS from using Blu-Ray (if they even can) either way I'm sure members of the BDA (namely Samsung/Hitatchi) would hate to forfeit the chance to manufacture and sell millions of BD drives to MS. I'd assume they'd be more profitable than the DVD drives they've been providing since the Orig. Xbox too.

Most Blu-ray movies use H.264, which has nothing to do with MS.
But a few movies use VC-1, a codec that MS shares a 15 company patent with. To my knowledge, it's not exclusive in any way.

did that stop Nintendo from using a form of Blu-Ray for the upcoming Wii-U?
and does MS's Xbox sector deter Sony from buying OS licenses from MS?
no.
Sony owns a stake in dvd as well and it didnt keep MS from using it. MS would be stupid not to use Blu ray. Its a selling point and could steer consumers away from wii u[QUOTE="FashionFreak"]

Yes. Its just like Samsung makes the screens for ipad even though Samsung competes against ipad with their Galaxy tablets. Most blu-ray movies use a MS codec, from what I recall.[QUOTE="dotWithShoes"][QUOTE="T-Aldous"]Sony did NOT invent blu-ray so...its possibleTikeio

um actually no Most Bluray movies use VC-1....they just started using h.264 about a 2 or 2.5 years ago.Maybe they'll start push for the HVD format... idk.. but I don't see what's stopping MS from using the BD format considering Nintendo is somewhat using it...
and as far as Sony is concerned, I do believe the 2 developing authorities in the BD format was Sony and Philips. You also have to consider the original 9 members of the BDA; in which Sony is one of them:http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press_Archive/200205/02-0520E/
I don't think royalties will be imposed since Sony is doing other ventures such as computers.
i would not be necessary or anything but i think it will have a bd drive in it.
Riverwolf007
Considering assets are becoming more complicated and texture file sizes and all that will inevitably increase with higher poly counts on meshes and all that would be stupid for them not to shift to blu ray considering drives are much faster than in 06 :P
