Microsoft cancels 33% of the exclusive new IP's that was shown E3 2012

Xbox maker cans development on Pirates of the Caribbean director's game Matter.

Microsoft has canceled Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski's game Matter, the company confirmed to Joystiq today. It was to be developed in partnership with the film director and Blind Wink Games and release on Xbox Live Arcade this year.

"Microsoft Studios is no longer pursuing this title," Microsoft said. "We have no further details to share at this time."

Verbinski signed an exclusive deal with Microsoft in 2011 to deliver "original interactive entertainment content" to Microsoft platforms across the world.

This late in the game, Microsoft doesn't need to invest in exclusives.  Third party will flock that that 40 million user base and support the system.

Microsoft is  securing key exclusive developers for Xbox 720.  When 720 is finally revealed, A long list of 10-20+ first year exclusives will be announced.

Now all Microsoft has to do now is cancel their next Xbox.

Well so far we know its going to be mostly kinect games and MS are going to use the kinect cameras to spy on you and your family in order to target direct advertising,

What MS should do is announce games 5 years in advance and then just show them at each E3 in subsequent years with mocked up footage and no gameplay and let their fanbase squeal with delight each time and cry victory :P

(EDIT and of course pretend the release is imminent w/o giving any firm release date)

I'm really curious what MS is going to do next gen. Halo has been outshined by CoD and it on par with Battlefield, making it not the system seller that it once was. MS will obviously invest tons of money into a huge title next gen to make up for Gears of War kind of fizzling out but what developers do they really have under them that could accomplish such a game? I doubt any third parties will dedicate an entire series to the Nextbox considering all of the sales they could get if they were multiplatforms.

I guess we will all have to see once MS unveils their next console and future games. This was a Kinect game so I doubt anything of value was actually lost.
