Microsoft takes $6.2 Billion charge. In one quarter. Basically they paid $6.2 Billion for a company, and now the assets they aquired are totally worthless. Money well spent?

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-takes-6-2-billion-013849121.html

Hopefully Google or Apple come out with a console soon because at this point I don't see Microsoft or Sony having the resources to compete anymore. I foresee many multibillion wrtie downs especially in Microsoft's future which will make it difficult to focus on non-core businesses. Windows phone is a gauranteed multibillion write down for 2013. They might have to scrap any XBOX plans after these financial disasters, either that or raise the Live fees to $100 to compensate.

Sony is the only of the big 3 close to death.

MS and Nintendo are much wealthier companies.

Actually Nintendo stock has taken a huge hit during the last year or two. They really aren't in much better shape than Sony anymore, although I would guess they probably have less debt they still have always been a much "smaller" company than Sony. Nintendo is always just 1 or 2 bad console launches away from going under, they were already there in the mid 2000's but the Wii was their big comeback - which buys them another 5-10 years of survival.

Obviously Microsoft still has an extremely strong balance sheet, kind of like what Sony had in the 2000's. However I really believe Microsoft will be going downt he same path in 5-10 years. Can anyone REALLY see us still using Windows software 5 or 10 years from now? I certainly hope not. Right now MS is desparately scrambling to get a foothold in mobile and tablet operating systems, and I honestly don't see much success for them. I'm telling you get ready for multibillion write-offs every year for Microsoft. Their decline will look exactly like Sony after MP3's took away the Walkman cash cow... now tablets and mobile will be taking away 90% of windows customers. If Google or Apple get that foothold into the enterprise business, then it's game over for Microsoft.

Nintendo has been making profit continuously, and will continue to do so.

M$ is very rich and this deal has nothing to do with the industry.

Nintendo has a higher market cap (worth more) than Sony and have no debt. Sony debt is massive.

Microsoft attempts to take on Google in Ads related to search and fails....This isn't surprising, and rather silly on Microsoft's part.

Even in the world of Mobile Google makes a killing off of Ads, beating out Apple's iAd program(but of course Apple actually SELLS more apps to it's credit).

Besides, I'm almost positive Microsoft has Cash Reserves in hand to stave off losses.

MS is worth about 260 Billion, i think they will be fine. Also, taking a charge doesnt mean a loss, as a company as large as MS can easily write that off at this stage of the game.

Just to add insult to injury, portions of link below:

The charge will likely wipe out any profit for the company's fiscal fourth quarter. Wall Street was expecting Microsoft to report fiscal fourth-quarter net profit of about $5.25 billion, or 62 cents a share, on July 19.

In addition to the write-down, Microsoft said its expectations for future growth and profitability at its online services unit - which includes the Bing search engine and MSN Internet portal - are "lower than previous estimates."

Microsoft's online services division is the biggest drag on its earnings, currently losing about $500 million a quarter as the company invests heavily in Bing in an attempt to catch market leader Google. The unit has lost more than $5 billion in the last three years alone. Even though its market share has been rising, Bing has not reached critical mass required to make the product profitable.

Well they do get WP8, sort of. Obviously they miss out on the hardware upgrades but they should be able to get the majority of the software updates. And it''s the same with the iPhone. When iOS 6 comes out, people who own the iPhone 4S aren't gonna get all the features from iOS 6 simply because the hardware won't support.

The only MS sort of screwed up is saying that they won't get WP8 when they will, just not the entire update.

That's true. The difference is, Microsoft never mentioned that Win phone 7 users would need to upgrade. They kept quiet about it. Many people are not too happy, mostly the late adopters of Win phone 7.

Windows 7 phones are actually doing pretty decent( I work for At@T) There no where near android or I-phone but there already starting to surpass Blackberry . In a few years they will probably be a major player.

In 5 or 10 years I see Windows going dramatically going downhill. It's already going away at the consumer level, the ONLY reason to use it is for gaming. Enterprise is the other half of their business, but that business is not assured indefintely. Not with the overall erosion of the PC market. Microsoft will have to reinvent themselves or they will look like RIMM when enterprises abandoned the Blackberry for the IPHONE (something that just 2 years ago people arged would never happen).

Sarcasm? if not, you have no idea how the world works. I'm a professional software engineer and we use XP at work. We pay huge, I mean huge, amounts of money for MS licenses.

Hence: "If Google or Apple get that foothold into the enterprise business, then it's game over for Microsoft."

Windows 7 phones are actually doing pretty decent( I work for At@T) There no where near android or I-phone but there already starting to surpass Blackberry . In a few years they will probably be a major player.

That's because the blackberry was a fad that teenagers moved on from. It better be doing better than it:p

6.2 Billion in one Quarter? Is it gonna be 8 Billion next quarter? Wow.

dream431ca

Post is misleading. MS didnt post a 6.2 Billion loss

No, they posted a write off, which is pretty much the same thing.

Maybe you should spend more time learning about business and less blindly bashing/hating MS. A LOSS and a WRITE OFF are NOT the same thing, not even "pretty much", not if you really really wanted them to be. Grow up...

Sony is the only of the big 3 close to death.

MS and Nintendo are much wealthier companies.

Lol none of these companies are doomed, only fanboys think that. It is ironic however that 360 fantards say Sony is going to leave the industry, but when in reality it's MS who has closed down more of their own game studios than anyone else because their sutdios were not making any money and no one was buying their games.

Truth is that outside of the Xbox brand, Xbox Live,Kinect, Halo and Gears, and Windows, everything MS tries turns to sh!t. Zune was flopped off the market hard, GFWL flopped off the market hard, many of their exclusives like Kameo and PDZ and Banjo you will NEVER see sequels too because they flooped off the market hard.

All businesses only care about profit, but some care more about their fanbases than others. MS does not give a damn about their consumers, the moment the Xbox brand starts to lose money MS will back out of the game industry. It's only about the money for them and that's it.

ShadowMoses900
Not true. There is a TON of MS developed software in technologies behind the scenes in just about every industry. So you are wrong on that too. Just because you dont know about it doesnt mean it doesnt exist. Lets try research first....

That and the co-founders refused to adapt and decided that sticking with the old ways was a better idea.

you really can't compare nintendo to microsoft and sony, videogame wise yes, but as a whole company no. Nintendo only does one thing, microsoft and sony have their hands in lots and lots of different pieces of pies.

Nintendo has been making profit continuously, and will continue to do so.

M$ is very rich and this deal has nothing to do with the industry.

No it's the value of the shares. Net worth is the company's value. And Sony has much higher.

Wrong dude. Market cap is the value of shares multiplied by the amount of shares. Taking the value of shares alone can be misleading and dangerous in investing. For example: Stock price: $50 Outstanding shares: 50 million Market cap: $50 x 50,000,000 = $2.5 billion To prove our opening sentence, look at this second example: Stock price: $10 Outstanding shares: 300 million Market cap: $10 x 300,000,000 = $3 billion This is how you should look at these two companies for evaluation purposes. Their per-share prices tell you nothing by themselves. http://stocks.about.com/od/evaluatingstocks/a/stocksmarketcap.htm
