Every company except sony has a main franchise that appeal to everyone sony does not have that, microsoft and nintendo could build a whole fanbase of there best franchises, sony can not do that because metal gear solid and final fantasy does not appeal to a broad audience like halo, and mario.

It used to be crash bandicoot, then it was *sort of* Jak and Daxter... but not even they really represent Sony.

Hmm heres a thought. Maybe its like Phil Harrison said.. Sony doesnt build their console off just one franchise. Maybe Sony doesnt want "Just one" stand out franchise

Well Sony (referring to PS2) did offer a wider selection of games like MGS, FF, GoW, GT, and a few more.  It never had a main franchise

Why would Sony use those franchises when they're third-party? Anyways, back in '96/'97 it kind of was Crash, but he couldn't compete with personalities as strong as Mario or Sonic. Then they toyed around with that lameass "polygon man" idea.

Exactly, thats the downfall of just one franchise, you can only rehash them so many times....

In my opinion Sony tried to make Crash Bandicoot its mascot back when it was new in the industry and the two main competitors both had their own established mascots (Sonic and Mario). Sony either failed at attempting to generate a mascot for its consoles, or stopped trying after realizing that it had gained an image of having 'something for everyone'. I think Sony now fully tries to avoid creating any characters to be taken as mascots for its consoles so it can preserve the 'something for everyone' image.

Definitely Snake. Although he's been on other platforms, he's most respected and well-known on a Playstation franchise and has been going on it since the PS1, not just late in the PS2's life (like Kratos).

kratos is probably the closest thing sony have that can be considered a co. mascot... but how many more god of war games can they make? unless the do something drastic like what ms did with halo (making an rts game) or nintendo with mario (branching in out into everything) then after gow 3 (if there is one) then is there really a future for kratos... guess we just have to wait an see

Well, it has to be 1st party and so the closest would probably be Kratos. Snake is a 3rd party character, he's appeared on numerous platforms, so that immediately discredits him.

in terms of marketing it'd make sense as someone like Kratos, as many gamers know of him..

 

But i think the dude from shadow of colosuss is more mascot like or solid snake if sony owned Kojima's team
