Microsoft have a chance to sink the PS3.

First of all, let me say that don't own a console at all.

Stepping back from it all, it seems that Microsoft should be due for a console refresh in the next couple of years. I know both MS and sony have said that this gen will last to 2012 or whenever - but with both consoles struggling to pull of high/medium settings at 720p and new hardware from nividia/amd/intel/ibm on the table Microsoft are in a position to refresh and make the PS3 insignificant before it has really taken off. Last time i looked MS can burn billions and not blink - Sony cannot.

Im no CEO or anything like that but;

If i was calling the shots at MS, I would fast track a refreshed console for late 2010 - 2011 using a similar, or the same, architecture but more powerful components ( so devs dont have learn anything new other than they now have more resources to work with). Also ensure backwards compatibility for 360 games, Slash 360 prices to a break even price. And take a big loss if necessary offset by dominance in the software industry.

Sony can do nothing - but hope people will buy their console based on price (look at the price!) or out of brand loyalty, or begin a console refresh of their own and write off the PS3. Sony, unlike MS, cannot burn billions like it was small change.

It may be hard to spot due to the wall of text, but the obligatory Killzone 2 mention is buried in there.

I also like how you didnt go agaisnt anything i said as well. Unlike M$ whichs plan was to try and convert as many people as they could as fast as they could to get them away from the ps. which doing this they just launched all of their games very soon to get people buying. this plan was clear to the sony from the start you will find that most business experts knew that this was their plan it was as clear as day. Sony then held back and and waited but in doing so they were making all of their high end games and taking care and time ensuring they were all up to the high standard that they need to be. Now when xbox has finished releasing all of its high end game and sony has sat back taking the blows. You will find that they will now start releasing their games out when the xbxo is starting to dry up to 1 not have much competion, 2 to make the xbox look even worse becuase they arnt coming out with anything new for the next set of years. 2. If they can stop all of Sony's studios from releasing games
3. Buy up all of the big third party games

The 3rd point may already be rolling. GTA series. Did MS not pay for exclusivity of downloadable content? It looks like a multiprong attack. Xbox1 was a tester and showed that it is not difficult gain a foot hold in console gaming. MS have realised that it the games more than anything that sells consoles and aggressively seeks to secure these games for its console.

With the results from the xbox1 experiment they quickly released the mark2 ensuring that it would be easy to develop for and reasonably cheap evolving its online capabilities tested on the xbox1 (and jacked from the dreamcast). More importantly, it was first out of the gate. Add to this the money they are willing to throw at devs like r* to multiplat games and provide additional service or content.

Sony have had to play catch up. But the 3rd prong is imminent (2yrs) - a refresh - and before devs have truly mastered exploiting the PS3 potential thus negating its supposed technical superiority. Know that MS will keep its console easy, or at least easier, to develop for than the PS3. Dont be suprised if it is more or less the same as developing for the 360 and that 360 games will work with the successor console.

They aren't going to bring out another XBox 360 right now, but in 2011, they probably will. By that time the Xbox 360 will probably be $99 and have sold over 50 million. Releasing a new xbox in 2011 with 100% B/C would be perfect. Everyone will chuck their old XBox 360 and get the new system. If M$ drops their price again, it's pretty much over I think. If PS3 loses another holiday, there;s no way they will ever catch the Wii and the chance of them catching the XBox 360 will be even slimmer. They still might catch the 360 in Europe, but not in the U.S.

Last time i looked MS can burn billions and not blink - Sony cannot.

Im no CEO or anything like that but;

If i was calling the shots at MS, I would fast track a refreshed console for late 2010 - 2011 using a similar, or the same, architecture but more powerful components ( so devs dont have learn anything new other than they now have more resources to work with). Also ensure backwards compatibility for 360 games, Slash 360 prices to a break even price. And take a big loss if necessary offset by dominance in the software industry.

Sony can do nothing - but hope people will buy their console based on price (look at the price!) or out of brand loyalty, or begin a console refresh of their own and write off the PS3. Sony, unlike MS, cannot burn billions like it was small change.

Chance for the new kid to sink the old champ? Any thoughts?

The games aren't looking like they're gonna slow down anytime soon...so I plan on getting a few more years out of my 360. -.- Them releasing a new console and cutting off support of the 360 and getting devs to make games exclusive to the next xbox for 6 months instead of the 360 would just ruin everything...killab2oo5

If MS tries to launch a new console during a recession they're going to get their asses kicked. Sony isn't dropping the PS3 any time soon, but if Microsoft tries to launch early again then they're going to turn into Sega all over again. People hated Sega for releasing frequent new systems and then dropping support for them shortly after, and that's what killed them in the end. If Microsoft wants to kill whatever consumer trust they may have earned (or purchased) this gen, i can think of no better way to do it than to launch Xbox 720 early.Timstuff
