So if 1 billion goes to repairs their is still a billion more.I guess MS should just quit this industry for good and i bet it'll happen sooner rather than later if this continues.

Soy probably expected to lose billions on their first year. But Microsoft was planing on gaining from the 360 in 08.....doesn't look like thats going to happen anymore though.

I'm not to worried about them though. They'll pull through.

Microsoft is taking one hit after another. It appears as though they just might be getting shaky legs, but I don't think they are ready to pull the plug yet.

If another substantial issue arises, then they may visit the elimination of hardware design from their strategy.

Whilst money hasn't really ever been an issue for Microsoft, someone higher up on the ladder HAS to be looking at all this loss of money with a disgruntled tone. somewhere in the range of 3 BILLION dollars LOST in one month. That isn't over the course of a year, that is in one month. That is harsh. This will be sure to turn some heads in Microsoft Corp. That isn't to say failure is eminent, but it sure as hell doesn't help the matter. And I love how lems are already damage controlling for Microsoft, and trying to turn this around to be about Sony. This is about Microsoft.

Yes indeed from a financial standpoint the 360 is flopping more than the original xbox which had 5 billion dollar losses in 4 years whereas 360 already has 3 billion in loses in just 1.5 years.

A few hardware problems for the 360 but overall it's a great console. Once the 65nm chipset is in the 360 it's going to be so much better. Second over 7 million people on XBL and I bet over half are gold subscribers. This holiday season is going to be great for MS.

Jack Trenton says they've sold 6 million PS3's. I don't know where Nexgenwars gets 3.7 million from? Maybe they're anti Sony too?

You say it's got problems but it's a great console? It has a 1 in 3 failure rate. Sony makes the PS3 flawless and you rip it to shreds? Makes little sense.

Very well stated. This is raising eyebrows. The legs are shaking just a tad. They certainly aren't going to pull the plug out yet. But if there is another substantial setback, I think they would begin funneling money and marketing into Plan B: Games for Windows.

If you think it's ok for M$ to be loosing billions of dollars on their gaming division because they are making up for it in their OS division you are sadly mistaken. Any good CEO will tell you that each division is treated like it's own corporation. They are responsible for earning income by trimming staff, reducing production costs or whatever else is necessary. Just because the rest of the company is doing well that doesn't mean that M$ will not cut the division to shreds if it thinks it will be more profitable without it.

Correction: "this holiday season has to be great for MS". the XBOX division is like Microsoft's gold diggin' wife. 50million here for exclusive content that doesn't really even matter to a lot of people, almost 2 billion in losses over the course of a year, untold countless other millions/billions on "exclusive content" from other third parties. I have a feeling the 360 division is going to have its leash shortened by Microsoft. This isn't to say I want to see Microsoft fail, but I naturally do want to see Sony succeed, and overshadow MS once again. But i'm sure the 360 will remain a contender in this gen. Wether or not the next MS console comes out is in the air. I think the fallbacks of the 360 are starting to show themselves. No build in HD drive, Hard drive STILL not standard, and faulty hardware. All of these things are taking a rather large toll on sales.

Where as the competition has seen success due to HD drive, standard hard drive, and utter reliability. Really, Microsoft is leaning a bit too heavily on Halo 3, and XBL. IMO of course.

Nintendo has made a profit on every video game system they have made including the Gamecube. If you recall the Gamecube was last place last gen. It's about effective management and decision making just like it always has been.

The Wii is a prime example. Last place last gen and everyone counted for them to be dead last this gen also. Here they are half a million from first and going stronger then ever.

This is just sad what does vista has to do with this.

Because sony isnt actually making as big a loss from the ps3 as the accounts say. Why?Well because the sale of blue ray movies to ps3 owners dont go in the ps3 sales. And besides the situation is just not that worse BY ANY STRETCH of the imagination for sony. They have made a profit for over a decade now in the gaming industry and some losses after huge successes happen with many firms and projects.

But microsoft has not made anything in 6 years.DAMN 6 YEARS.And i bet they wont be making a profit for the next 5 years at the very least because they now have to first wipe away the 8 billion dollar loses considering it doesnt get anymore:lol: before making profits which i doubt will ever happen.

This may have been due to the release of Vista. Which by the way, is tanking. The revenue figures will be much lower, I'll speculate, come next quarter.

MS is in tough times. Their Xbox is sinking, and Vista is just more steerage. I'm sure they are beginning to get worried.

Between Microsoft and Sony, Microsoft is surely the lesser of two evils.

Sony's marketing, PR and console strategy have all been abysmal. Lying to peoples faces about so much, and delivering so little (until very recently) leaves me perplexed as to why people pledge allegience to such a malevolent business.

Both of which will not sell more consoles.

Does anyone here really think Halo 3 is going to bring in more customers? Anyone drooling over Halo 3 already has an Xbox.

I disagree 100% with you on that. Microsoft has Windows, which can play games. We really don't need MS dominating hardware too. Complete control to MS would be pretty bad.

I disagree 100% with you on that. Microsoft has Windows, which can play games. We really don't need MS dominating hardware too. Complete control to MS would be pretty bad.

In the console market, M$ has shown itself to have much, much more integrity than Sony. I fail to understand how people think otherwise.

[QUOTE="MTBare"]Consoles are an investment.. Not an instant money making process.MTBare

I'm not sure if you were going with me or against me. And yes I know, investments make you money.. They just take time to do so.

I don't see how you can claim that Consoles are an investment because they arn't. Nintendo has never made a console that lost money (they did make the virtual boy but it was scrapped very quickly), Sony has never made a console that lost money, Microsoft has never made a console that has made money.

I don't care how you spin it loosing large sums of money in a division for 6 years straight is not good business.

And MS pulled in nearly 15 billion in net profit for the year, which is a 15% increase from last year. Yes MS is hurting, LOL!!! :lol:eastside49er

It's not so much about MS hurting as a whole, it's about the game division tanking. Anyone who thinks that MS will continue to support a multi-billion dollar bleeder indefinitely is entirely disconnected from reality. MS is in the business of making money and if the game division doesn't produce a profit this gen (which it doesn't look like it will) MS will pull the plug on the Xbox.

A few hardware problems for the 360 but overall it's a great console. Once the 65nm chipset is in the 360 it's going to be so much better. Second over 7 million people on XBL and I bet over half are gold subscribers. This holiday season is going to be great for MS.

They are losing so much because of the on-going repairs and warranties that they have to honor on the Xbox 360. What does this mean for the end-consumer? Absolutely nothing. Microsoft has poured in too much time and money to just throw their hands up and give up on the Xbox 360

It's really funny that the fanboys are ripping into Microsoft for operating at a loss in their games division because of repairs, the same people who were accusing Microsoft of intentionally bricking Xbox 360s, or intentionally making them unreliable, in order to milk more sales and, thus, profit. So they intentionally did it in order to operate at a loss? I know, nobody REALLY believed that they were doing it on purpose.

Obviously, these hardware failures of the Xbox 360 are hurting the game division. In the short-term, Microsoft will be hurting. However, they may be able to turn the corner and finally distance themselves from all this starting in the autumn with the release of the falcon chipset and with Mass Effect and Halo 3 on shelves.

2008 will be a clean slate for those guys.
