Microsoft May Bring "All Their Big Games" To PS5, Analyst Says

2025 could be the year Microsoft goes "all-in" on its multiplatform strategy, a video game analyst has said.

By on January 3, 2025 at 6:33AM PST

According to a veteran video game industry analyst, 2025 could be the year that Microsoft goes "all-in" on bringing its Xbox games to other platforms, including PlayStation 5. Microsoft, of course, has already begun to launch some games on rival platforms, but Serkan Toto of Kantan Games believes Microsoft will lean further into that this year.

Toto told GI.biz that Microsoft may opt to do this for a variety of reasons, including helping to pay for its massive buyout of Activision Blizzard and the "huge lead" of PlayStation in the market.

"2025 might be the year where they go all-in," Toto said. "The $69 billion Activision Blizzard deal, rising costs across the board, the power of forever-titles, the huge lead of Sony, and other factors will likely leave Microsoft no choice but to bring all their big games to PS5 early, including blockbusters such as Gears of War: E-Day or Perfect Dark."

In early 2024, Microsoft surprised some people by announcing some of its first-party games would launch on other platforms, including Sea of Thieves, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush, and Pentiment. Even before this, though, Microsoft was already one of the biggest publishers on PlayStation and Switch thanks to the juggernaut Minecraft series. Call of Duty is now a Microsoft franchise, too, and Microsoft continues to release the game on PlayStation platforms.

One of the next big Xbox games to come to PlayStation is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which launches for PS5 in Spring 2025. Beyond this, there are ongoing rumors of a Halo: Combat Evolved remaster project that could launch on PS5.

In May, it was reported that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood are mandating increasing margins at all divisions, including Xbox. At the time, it was reported that Microsoft might look to release even more of its first-party games on PlayStation to help increase revenue. There is said to be an internal plan within Microsoft called "Latitude" that is focused on formulating plans to bring more first-party Xbox games to rival systems.

I'm pretty sure everyone here in SW knows this by now. I personally want to see Halo CE Remake come to PS5 so that everyone can experience Halo when it launched during the golden age of gaming the 6th gen. While we're at it MS, bring Gears of War: E-Day to PS5 as well.

Either way, I'll be playing everyone's games on my omega gaming PC. PC gamers always win😎

@R4gn4r0k: I don't think Rare Replay will ever come to PC and that's a shame as I own Series S just to play it. At least we have Sea of Thieves on PC😁

Microsoft decided to make security a top priority and is tying employee reviews to their work on security.

"When faced with a tradeoff, the answer is clear and simple: security above all else."

What if the tradeoff is increasing margins? Poor employees. They're being asked to cut corners and increase quality at the same time. And both are tied to their salary. No extra time and effort on security? Bad review, no raise or bonus increase. Not doing as much as possible for a margin increase? Company gets less profits and there is less money for raises and bonuses.

@SecretPolice: yeah I heard a rumor where Phil Spencer said that they tried running Everwild on a 5080 and it just couldn't handle it, so they promptly cancelled the PC version.

Everwild is now a PS5 pro exclusive 🧐

This isn't a controversial take.

Xbox has significant headwinds in the near term that can only be mitigated through their content offerings. They can't just sit around and wait for their mobile store or cloud gaming or even GamePass to do their heavy lifting. These things have taken and will continue to take years to materialize into significant drivers.

I find it funny when these threads are posted and people start saying this is bad for Xbox.

I'd argue that, as far as the current market (and economy) is concerned, this is bad for Sony.

If MS continues to increase their content output at the rate they have scheduled for this year, and they keep securing 3rd party game for GP, and lets say that every single game came to PS5 day one-6mos later.

The argument then becomes spend $70 on every game or get every game on GP.

That is the part that is bad for Sony, especially if they keep expanding PC game pass and come out with the hybrid console next gen.

Sony's model works in an Xbox vs PS world, but will fall apart the moment Xbox commits to putting all of their games on PS because their releases will force PS gamers to have to choose between Sony's first party releases and the large amount of Xbox releases.

What happens to PS5 exclusive sales when they also have to compete with Xbox first party titles?

I'd worry about that if I were Sony. They are already dealing with thin margins, which will get thinner having to compete with MORE games. People on have so much money to spend on new games. This is MS CEO's "spend Sony out of business" comes into play.

There's a lot to love and enjoy in this era we live in, but one thing I don't like is how easy we've made it for corporations to promote their own bullshit lol.

I mean, how easy is it these days to say "_____ says 'We may do ______ and this means we might _____' "?

Boom! Millions of clicks.

Journalists don't follow up, don't interview, don't verify....they don't chase down rumors to find the truth (if any exists)...there's zero accountability.

So the c-suites just watch their stock ticker, maybe say something on Twitter or to a might-as-well-be-on-the-payroll "journalist", and watch the stocks go up.

Yeah, I stopped reading right there.

I don't blame Eddie, mind you, for the absolute shit "journalism" (we all have to eat, after all) but I do blame the system that promotes the clickbait "articles" he spews forth.

It's absolutely different, simple economics.

All of these 3rd party games come to xbox and PS anyway. Sony already places their games around these 3rd party releases, and vice versa.

MS has no incentive to do so, but even if they did..........its still more AAA games that gamers have the option to buy that they didnt before.

5-6 AAA games released per year vs 10-12 is a huge difference, and there's a very small portion of gamers that can afford to buy every game.

Sony makes a huge chuck of money on their AAA releases, those sales WILL decline MS releases a AAA game within the same time as these games. Small examle, if Forza releases near GT8, some people will shift. Intergalactic releases near other MS AAA titles. Most people will have to choose.

Always funny when people pretend that GamePass is free 😆 For Day 1, you have to pay $19.99 a month. That's a lot just to rent a game. Sure, that's nice for those one and done experiences like Indiana Jones, but there is no way Xbox will have enough output consistently to have people constantly subscribed. The math is not going to work out from a profitability standpoint. And that's already been proven, because if it was, Xbox wouldn't be putting their games on other systems.

On top of that, Sony already has a health subscriber base with PS Plus Catalog. The only difference is that they don't offer Day 1, as because we just mentioned, there's a profitability issue. And last, we have yet to see any proof that most people prefer streaming/renting over owning the game. Your average consumer buys only a few games a year, and I doubt they have a huge issue with buying them.

Streaming works for movies because they are typically 1.5 to 2 hour experiences. Gaming is different, its a time sink, and most people prefer to outright own the game then constantly pay rental fees.

I knew I'd get one of you to give me this response.

Here's the the thing though. WE (gamers like me and you) agree with what you posted. Id rather own my games, whether its physical or digital.

The generation after us? The tiktok generation? They dont care about owning games, and they outnumber us. They dont even want to buy a traditional gaming device. Why? I personally think social media has destroyed the attention span of the generation after us, couple that with the rise in forever games like CoD, Fortnite, Minecraft, etc.

What you posted applies to us, but we are slowing either aging out of buying games, or aging out of gaming.

I give this example a lot, but my 2 boys love Fortnite and expect to be able to play it everywhere. They get confused that games cost $70 when they are used to spending so little.

Same with the kids I work with. Somehow, to them and their parents $15-20 a month > $70 games because it allows them to play 400+ games including new releases.

Again, I agree with you buying > renting, but the generation after us arent used to owning games in the first place? How do you explain to them that "renting" is bad when its all they know?

We debate these things on forums, but we have to realize that we are a VERY small community in industry. Most kids (and it shows in the numbers) dont see microtransactions as an issue because (in the words of my boys ) "but the game was free, why cant we buy more skins?"

They've made it ready clear they don't intend to have exclusives in the future, so we already knew this. It's more important for Gamepass to thrive and as long as game activity doesn't suffer due to these changes then it works out best in the end for all parties this way.

I personally don't plan on buying any additional Xbox branded consoles unless they go hybrid and allow launchers in their next console, but I would certainly buy ,any of their games if I can get them on Playstation. I don't see the problem with it.

@navyguy21: Too many folks on here live in a bubble and rely on their echo chamber to reinforce their perspectives. Console gaming in the traditional sense is being sustained by old farts and is offering less of an insensitive than they did before. I read from several folks on here who are still waiting for "true next Gen games"😂. Talk about being lost.

@navyguy21: I have no idea how to respond to the crap that has spewed from you with those posts.

Xbox being gone is only a plus for Sony. It's just gonna mean more people buying playstations, sony gets a cut for all MS games sold. At that point MS is just a 3rd party publisher, dude they essentially just replace activision (Activision became them). It's not like MS is outputting 80 percent of all games made.

All I see is GamePass Subscriber stagnation, I don't think MS releasing games on another platform is going to help with that my guy. Any semblance of critical thought should tell you this. LOL like did you really think people would be like "OMG Halo on Playstation! Better buy GAMEPASS to play on my phone?.....and not on my playstation.....OH MAN God of War Egypt is coming out tomorrow! Better not buy it because of all the MS studios games on Gamepas???" Like who thinks like that?

Anyway give me Master Chief Collection on PS5 please

the goal is to sell software and services to as many paying customers as possible..

in a gaming world where the console war is over, more games will be multiplatform.. heck, PlayStation won the console war and even all their games are "timed exclusives" at this point..

the next-generation of gaming is going to be interesting as people come to grips with this reality..

@navyguy21: I think Sony makes 30% off of third party releases, so don't they want them to sell?

Would you sacrifice 100% for 30?

If so, then im sure Sony would be fine with it.

You're saying when Sony sells their own game they don't have to pay for development and 100% is pure profit?

I think you know what I'm saying.

Sony gets 100% of revenue vs 30% royalty on game 3rd party sales.

Your response is disingenuous and scattered so I wont bother addressing the points you attempted to make.

Spend $70 vs GamePass has been an argument this whole generation and GamePass hasn't come out on top.

Heck, the latest COD was on GP day one and they had their November *ever* in NA for an uncontested Xbox.

(uncontested meaning there's no next gen hardware to compete against it)

---

Your second point makes even less sense.

PlayStation exclusives already compete against the industries heavy hitters and many of Xbox's major IPs like Minecraft, COD, Diablo, Overwatch etc. More Xbox games being on PlayStation is a net positive for PlayStation since they make money from the sales of the content on their platform either through a licensing fee and directly selling the content on the PlayStation Store.

Software sales is a tailwind for them, period. It makes them more revenue and profit.

Note: Operating Income (OI) / profit was up 184%.

Their profit margins are also expected to be at a three-year high this current fiscal year.

https://www.sony.com/en/SonyInfo/IR/library/presen/er/pdf/24q2_sonypre.pdf

tl;dr - Xbox games will make PlayStation more revenue, profit and can help improve margins.

I'm not sure continuing in the console hardware space is the right move for MS. Pumping out games to everyone would probably be the better business move given the unpopularity of their consoles.

However losing competition is a loss for all consumers.

It sounds like they make money on their own games and also make money on the games of third parties publishing on their platform too.

It is pretty obvious that he is talking about revenue sharing because of platform royalties.

Playstation is an xbox.

Xbox studios is one of,if not the biggest publishers on playstation.

Xbox studios keep playstations turned on.

Cows filling ms coffers.

And cows think they are winning 😂🤣😂🤣
