Thought this was awesome, what do you guys think?

Eurogamer writes:

UPDATE #3: Microsoft has provided Eurogamer with a full statement regarding its decision to drop charges for Xbox 360 game patches.

"Microsoft eliminated fees for Title Updates on Xbox 360 Arcade games in April 2013," a spokesperson said, reiterating what Hryb and Whitten announced below. "We're constantly evaluating our policies and implementing feedback.

"While our development policies are confidential, and will remain so, we're pleased to say that this is just one of many ongoing changes and improvements we've made to ensure Xbox is the best place possible for developers and gamers."

UPDATE #2: Microsoft's director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb and Xbox corporate vice president Marc Whitten have both confirmed the dropped update charges on Twitter.

Both stated, "Microsoft eliminated fees for Title Updates on Xbox 360 Arcade games in April 2013."

"You forgot to tell people," Phil Fish responded.

UPDATE: Fez developer Phil Fish is looking into whether Microsoft's new policy is retroactive, so he can finally patch Fez for free. Previously, it would have cost the indie developer "tens of thousands of dollars."

Now remove that publisher requirement that's going to lose your platform even being considered by Indy devs. Removing the fees is nice and all, but it's like saying the bartender won't demand thousands of dollars if you spill your drink, but you can't get into the nightclub in the first place.

This improvement on policy should help out the 360 ride that developer wave while M$ focuses their efforts towards the Xbox One.

I think Sony is forcing them to rethink some of the policies, so im sure the self publishing will come. Also, im pretty sure it will carry over to One, but again, they need to drop the self publishing thing to get games on the platform in the first place or patching is a dead issue

At one time, they were. And Sony still charges devs for bandwidth, so they still learn from each other. Neither company started out perfect, and neither will be moving forward. Dont laugh as if Sony has it all figured out. Sony learned a lot from MS as MS are learning from Sony now with policies and value to the consumer.

These rediculous requirements should have never been an issue in the first place.

Did you read the article to see why they did it? How do you feel about sony charging devs for bandwidth, meaning they still have to pay for putting up free demos, which is why PSN has far less demos than XBL?

I agree the bandwith charge is stupid, but charging for patches? I've always found that rediculous.

We have games released on steam now that within the first 24 hours receive atleast 3 to 5 patches to fix game breaking issues, charging devs to fix a game should have never been a valid business model.

Well, the aim was to prevent the very issue you stated...........devs releasing broken games on the platform. I guess they were trying the whole "nintendo stamp of approval" from back in the day. When that was lifted, it was flooded with crap. I think the fee was poorly implemented though, its not much you can do these days since publishers have such hard targets for releases.

The Microsoft Xbox 360 is so late into its use by Microsoft and consumers that doing something like the topic of this thread is probably not good enough for indie developers. Again, this is so late that Microsoft might not make a difference by doing that.

Years late. Gosh Microsoft is an astoundingly dumb and slow creature when responding to developers.

Depends where you're looking man. On the PC where there's a constant stream of 'indie' games there's honestly too many gems popping up every other week. In console space things are much fewer and further between. Still, Dead State looks rad.

Not specifically Steam, but yes, the PC is a great platform for independent developers.
