No Blu-Ray for X360

The comments by Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, poured cold water on recent speculation that Microsoft could support Blu-ray after Toshiba Corp (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research), backer of the rival HD DVD format, gave up when key movie studios and retailers abandoned the technology.

"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," Greenberg told Reuters in an interview.

Microsoft, which has stopped making an HD-DVD add-on for the Xbox 360, would continue to invest in its Xbox Live online service that already lets users rent hundreds of movies, including ones in high-definition.

"We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content," Greenberg said.

The software giant also expected that supply problems for the Xbox 360 meant the machine was outsold in the U.S. market by Sony's PlayStation 3 console in February for the second month in a row.

"We definitely expect we will trail in February as a result of our supply constraints," Greenberg said, adding: "By April, we will be in a very healthy inventory situation."

That would be in time for the April 29 launch of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc's (TTWO.O: Quote, Profile, Research) "Grand Theft Auto 4" game, which is widely expected to be one of the best-selling titles of 2008 and could drive purchases of the Xbox 360 and PS3

Greenberg spoke a day ahead of the planned release of U.S. video game sales data for February by market research firm NPD, whose monthly reports are pored over by game companies eager for bragging rights.

The PS3 struggled last year due to its high price and lack of must-have games, but sales have picked up in recent months thanks to price cuts in late 2008 and a slate of anticipated upcoming games.

"We still think we have a great value, that we have significantly better value than Sony. Every month we've actually been in stock we've outsold them by a 2 to 1 margin," Greenberg said.

I couldn't see it selling well because the movie people who would be interested probably have the HD DVD add on and how would they feel about buying another add on?

And with liscencing they probably wouldn't be able to get it down to a reasonable price. And why release something like this in the middle of the systems life when it's not even a popular format yet. all in all probably not a good business move. If this story is true something tells me the came to this consensus. They should use it in their next system though, unless that Terradisc is for real

In any case, id be a dumb move to not have a External Drive atleast. It jsut makes the PS3 more appealing.

Yeah, I agree that a blu-ray add-on would fail and it would make the PS3 more appealing.

yes there really is, it was all ready proven (looking for the thread and or news article i read) that at the start of janurary nearly all online retailers we're sold out of most of the 360 sku's, this was remedied fast but the shortage was there.

P.S: good to hear about blu ray, im not interested i have an ps3 for what the past 10 months? and i've yet to buy an blu ray movie, the only reason i purchased the hd dvd addon and the hd dvd's was because of the cheapness, all together i paid 250 dollars, 50 for the hd dvd addon, and 200 for like 30 hd dvd's it would have cost me about 400 to buy the same blu ray movies.

And not only that some of the hd dvd movies wont come to blu ray or wont any time soon.

I find it odd they said theres a shortages, yet when I went to Gamestop, gamecrazy, Best Buy, Circuit City and Target while looking for stuff one day, I found they had alot of 360s. black_awpN1

There's no shortages. They don't sell enough consoles for their to be a shortage. Now the Wii.....that has legitimate shortages and still sells the most month in and month out in the NPD.

Most places in the bay area, there are 360s. At least in the gamestops and other electronic retailers. I still can't find the wii and ds though.

It pretty much looks like i. I have never heard of the 360 selling out like the Wii in NA.

Well there's really no need for blu ray with Xbox 360 games right now, so I'm not suprised. And besides if they want to continue to dip into hd movies, they always have xbl video marketplace.

now all i need is for serenity, king kong, and beowulf to go over to blu-ray and ill be satisfied

Don't think of it as an add-on. Think of it as a really fancy USB hub...
