They could have made some sweet games with that money. Does Sony ever pay for exclusivity? Or do they just hope the company stays exclusive?

You could imagine this "content" is new city area's, missons, etc. AKA, they charge $20 for a city, and say, $10 for 10 missions, they'll make some cash.

*PS- The PC Version (if it's coming) will have all that free in Mods. :)

360 premium users better say bye bye to all their memory because they will more than likely be more than 1 gig each (i'm primarily talking about citys).

They should just make new ip games..and build their own library of exclusive games.. or used that money to fixed the 360 that is defective..GTAIV is a great game but spending 50 millions on DLC is stupid..microsoft is using money to bribe devlopers..to make games mulitplatform now..they should concentrate on bringin new ips.but they have no faith in it..

Why does this apply only to Microsoft? Just because people think devs that worked primarily on the PS2 would stay faithful to the PS3?

true they will probably charge like $10 - $20 which aint bad for whats basically an expansion.

I have rarely seen companies give expansion packs away for free

Sony has paid for exclusive contracts in the past. Rockstar is probably the best known one. When they were working on GTA III, it was scheduled for release on both the PS2 and Xbox at aroundthe same time. Then they signed a deal with Sony, and the Xbox version got shelved until it was revived as part of the GTA Double Pack much, much later. It's unlikely that the hardware manufacturer pays for every exclusive, though. Some devs have exclusives because the game they want to make is only suitable for certain hardware, some want to focus on a certain market that a particular console has a largepercentageof, and some just don't have enough money for multiple licensing fees.

Last time I checked Premium brought the hard drive. Core is the one without it. Memory is not hard drive space. Though it is often reffered to that memory is better known as RAM (Random accessed memory) which is found on PC's as ram sticks and on consoles are memory cards. =p.

First off wheres the link? Second off it makes zero sense to throw 50 million to have the 'better version' of a multiplat. This never happened, its just system wars dribble. And Microsoft would be better off throwing 200 million at Square to get Final Fantasy on the 360 then this...

You don't honestly believe that, right?

It's a simple concept anyway, they pay money to make money. I can't beleive all the people whining about the fact it's unlikely to be free, why would it?? Also PC owners are naieve if they think they'll get the same episodic content for free.

I really hope you're being funny, cause M$ has 50Billion in CASH (which happens to be the market cap of Sony), not to mention their buying power when youinclude stock.

The silly thing is that the 360 already was going to get the content. They just spent 50 million dollars so Sony couldn't have it.

It's like two brother's go into an icecream shop and get sundaes. The younger brother has a bunch of money he's save up and could get some other flavors of ice cream, but insteads decides to spend a whole lot money to make sure his brother doesn't get a cherry on top.

phantom dust is a great game and is very underated. it got a good rating, but never really got the word of mouth. i wonder if game would of been better if it came out on ps2. that game is a game that will appeal to ps2 gamers instead of xbox back in the days imo. i am glad i decide to take gamble by buying the game a while back. has great creative gameplay and i loved the story(creative story)

The only thing if this is true is Microsoft only purchased the download content but not really the actual content so Sony can actually hold not only the Microsoft retail version but it can hold the complete download version with room to spare.

This whole thing has been played out years ago with other companies.

Check the motorcycle history between Harley Davidson and Honda. At one time Harley Davidson was a company very much like Microsoft. It actually controlled there market at one time. Until this little Japanese company started building a motorcycle that was very reliable and after just a few years they actually drove Harley Davidson into bankruptcy. Now the HD is not a privately owned company it's actually a part of AMF.

but wait can someone with some math skills help me out a bit if i'm wrong or right.

3mill times $10 dollar = 30mill. that's just estimates.. if they charge $5 bucks for each episodic content and they have 2 coming, they can make their money back. that's assuming more than 3mill buy the game, it's easy to see since GTA is more than a 6mill seller.

The more the company spends the more they have to charge customers to turn a profit.. In this case though, they may just take the loss in order to keep it one step a head of sony.

Some devs have exclusives because the game they want to make is only suitable for certain hardware, some want to focus on a certain market that a particular console has a largepercentageof, and some just don't have enough money for multiple licensing fees.

It seems every Cow has forgotten about last gens exclusiveness with Rock*

I doubt Sony paid RockStar any money for exclusive content at all...Even if they did it wouldnt be 50 million that is just dumb..Microsoft last gen will be able to outbid sony too..but they didnt bother because they couldnt get anywhere with the original xbox..and many devlopers rather be makin a lot of money from the ps2... The PS2 have a big install base over 120 million..everyone would love to be publishing games for the Ps2.so sony didnt have to pay for any exlcuisve games..or contents..

I think Sony spending $40 mil to make Killzone 2 is more of a waste than MS spending $50 for GTA IV episodes. Why? Because first, Killzone 1 wasn't very good, noone bought the game, a small fanbase, noone cared for the game, average scores for the game, and noone cared for the story of the game. But GTA is just a better franchise, this is GTA number IV already, and every previous GTA game is a success. So why would you spend $40 mil on a game hoping it will be good when you can spend $50 mil on a franchise that always proves sales.

And don't get it confused that these are going to be just downloadable content, these are EPISODES. Probably bigger than Oblivion Shivering Isles or even Half Life 2: Episode 2. These are multi-billion companies, so $50 mil is nothing to them, that being said, they're not just throwing that money away, they're investing that money. And spending these amounts of money is necessary in a business like the video gaming business. Sony could have done the same, but they were too busy losing money with the problems they created.

Microsoft Will Not Fall.

notbeans

They may yet. Microsoft is facing increasing competition in every area from opensource software and Google (a company now valued at more than Microsoft) is really beginning to scare them (and me as well in fact).

What you have is a war between the two companies:

Google is waging it with community projects and project acquisitions and Microsoft is attempting to fend it off by leveraging the certainty and stability of desktop software.

Guess what? They are losing, at a time in the future you could find me railing against Google much the same as I do Microsoft today. Google's stock is worth more than 10 times as much as Microsoft's, they are half as valuable while being a quarter as young as a corporation and they have a higher profit margin.

Microsoft is scared and is doing everything it can to prevent a switch to Open Source including attempting to intimidate various governments into adopting OOXML over ODF.

that money could have gone to charity.Haseokicksass

Gimme a damn break you stupid cow. Bill Gates is going to give more of his fortune to charity once he's retired than Sony has in total assets. He will die the greatest philantropist to ever step foot on the planet earth. Your just jealous that Microsoft spent a large sum to make their version of what used to be your game better. Face it, it's over...
