Q: What is the post-mortem on Xbox 360 manufacturing? How has it turned out for you?

A: Like any other post mortem, there are some things you would have done differently that you learned and that you incorporate back into your processes. Overall, it was really smoothe compared to the complexity of the product we were building.

Q: The ramp of the Xbox 360 compared to the original Xbox. Was it similar or different?

A: Having lived through both of those, I remember both very well. Both were very complex products. State of the art technology. They were relatively similar in the ramp complexity and ramp speed. Exciting stuff. You and I had a conversation about this around November, 2005.

Q: I'm sure you've seen some of these complaints that we've written about from the guy who went through seven machines. There are a lot of people posting on the blog saying they still have problems. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that the quality of the Xbox 360 isn't there. How can you paint the bigger picture for me there?

A: We're very proud of the box. We think the vast majority of people are having just a great experience. You look at the number of games they are buying, the number of accessories they are buying, the Live attach. They love the box. They continue to buy the box. That said, we take any customer issue very seriously. We continue to look into these things very deeply. You have seen we have made some changes to our customer service policy.

Q: Do you still say that is a normal return rate for the console?

A: We continue to say the vast majority of the people are really happy with it.

Q: I've heard varying accounts of what is considered a normal return rate. Some people say that 2 percent is normal. Sometimes 3 percent to 5 percent is considered normal. Back to that question, can you address whether you are within those rates or within a normal rate.

A: We don't disclose the actual number.

Q: Normal compared to the Xbox?

A: We don't comment on that.

Q: What explains this anecodotal evidence that it's out of whack, compared to the Wii or the PlayStation 3 or other consoles.

A: I would go back and say the vast majority of people love their experience. We continue to go back and address all of these issues on a case by case basis. There is a vocal minority out there. We go off and try to address their issues as quickly and as pain free as possible.

Q: There were some folks, who are not totally guessing, who said that when you had three million consoles in the market, you have a bone pile of bad ones. That seems to suggest a pretty high defect rate as far as the yield goes. Can you address that?

A: We don't talk about our production.

grade-A dodging, IMO. Denial FTL.

Ask Ford why their trucks break down so much and they will give you the same kind of answer. I bought an extended warranty at launch because every system is known for crapping out after a year or two. This was before all the horror stories started pouring in. They extended my extended warranty until 2009 and I'm quite pleased with that. Now they appear to be changing the hardware so it cools better. I admit I am on my second XBOX360 and it fell apart right after I downloaded the Gears update but they got it back to me within a week...so its not like they aren't trying at all...

"Vast majority" of the people aren't having failures, ... so, that's a 49% failure rate, check.

It the quality was better than the original xbox, the rep would have said it. That they have improved a lot since last console but their rep choose to not comment. Silence can mean guilt sometimes.

Imo, 360 is a p.o.s. compared to the original xbox. What happens when your warranty runs out on your 360? kinda scary, isn't it?

So you keep paying for accessories, paying for live yearly, paying for warranty. omg... final prices is more than any other console.

It's obvious that the 360 is horrendously defective. MS has been dodging questions about defect rates since the thing launched, which is very dishonest business practice if you ask me. I imagine that the guy being interviewed either was sweating bullets, or grinning evily whenever he answered "We do not discuss that with miscreant peasants like you."

You'll find hardly anyone complaining that their PS3 or Wii upped and died on them. But with Xbox 360 it seems like one out of every 5 users is complaining about it. Really, is Xbox 360's big library worth it if you won't be able to play any of it after a year?

more proof that it was a rushed product.

what? you want to know what are the other proofs? the console has only sold a bit more than 10 million units within more than a year and half, and has only a handful of great games... the PS2 sold a lot more and had over 20 great games with the same time gap...

No MS is handling this brilliantly from a business point of view. They are keeping it out of the mainstream media so the vast majority have no idea about it. And most of the complainers on the internet dont even have a 360.

It had to be rushed or they wouldnt have been able to compete. The Wii is this gens PS and the 360 is this gens N64. Sales wise anyways. 360 will have a much better 3rd party library.

While possible it still remains a guess at best. And it would be better if you didn't try to play it off as fact.

In the US, Microsoft has admitted it's had a higher number of problems than it expected. Ellie Gibson, editor of the website gamesindustry.biz, told us the gaming companies shouldn't make consumers pay excessive charges.

The BBC are not a bunch of rumour starters. MS gave them a statement on the show and said they got more failures than they expected. I aint buying anymore games for my 360. I dont want a big selection of games that I cant play in 2 years time.

My 360's running okay. It's my first and I got it around the time Gears of War was released. I'm experiencing a few problems though. For some stupid reason, it's sometimes unable to read my copy of Table Tennis and it has never been able to play Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (by the time I tried GRAW, my warranty already expired so I can't return it). It freezes on me at a higher rate than any console I've ever played (freezes about once or twice a day).

Sadly, even if I did have a one year warranty (which I don't), warranties require the receipt as well (which I lost).

I will admit that I hate how he dodges the questions but to be fair, what else can he really say? I mean I think its smart that he says no comment because he might say something wrong and then things will prolly blow up even more in there face. Its business and even though there are alot of defected xbox 360's out there, in time im sure microsoft will fix those problems. Only thing that I know why alot of customers would be angry as hell is because for all the damn money MS makes, they should have fixed this problem long time ago with some new chips, but as greedy as most of these company's are, like I said, its all business in the end to them, were the ones who get screwed and milked while they try an make us forget about these things by adding tons of good games to there library, kind of like sony did with there ps2, the difference is, sony added a dvd player in there that made the ps2 a must buy since dvd players back then costed pretty much and was a big part of sony's success with the ps2. So this makes it harder on MS since there is really nuttin else on there console that can attract ppl to buy it like the ps2 had at its time. The xbox 360 has tons of great games, but they better bring in those new chips or they wont be seeing many xbox 360's fly off the shelf, even with an amazing library.

Just goes to show that the rep doesn't want to commit to any answer that might be revealed as false if the truth came out. This just seems like more proof to me that the 360 is made up of shoddy hardware.

Why don't you just call them and give them the production date. With MS all you need is the Production date it's on the console. You can only blame yourself if you don't try.

What they're doing is pissing this so called "vocal minority" off even more and generally hurting their brand in the long term by continuallly acting like arrogant **** I don't give a crap if they're doing a good job protecting themselves. Why should anyone? It's hurting the consumers. So unless you have stock in Microsoft I do not understand why you would make such a comment, basically trying to turn this around on Sony somehow. "Microsoft are better at lying than Sony. Pwned!!!!" Pathetic.

The Xbox360 is a lot like Vista. Rushed, buggy, and unreliable. I admit I don't have one and probuably never will because of how they're reacting to this problem, but this should have been fixed MONTHS ago. There is no excuse as to why all three 360's, the Core, the Premium, and the Elite especially are still having these problems when people knew about it before. This is really going to back fire on them one day and it's hurting the customer. But the Elite is said to have the same problems as the other two. Why? They had a chance right there to fix the problem and they still didn't and no one knows for sure if those new chips are really coming or not since MS wont say. What will 360 owners do if this problem continues for the next 2 years? Will they actually give up on sending back consoles and getting new ones? Or will they just keep on supporting this company?

I'd be interested to see the market's reaction if this news aboutthe xbox reliability problems got out beyond the hardcore community. It'd probably do serious damage to the xbox. Everyone would say 'no, I don't want a faulty console!' What Sony should do is run some surveys, see if the xbox really has serious reliability problems and publicize them.

It's as if people forgot the 360 was made by Microsoft, when have they ever been reliable? I've had so many problems with Microsoft products, there's no way I'd dump $500 on their faulty console too.

Telling people how reliable it is helps to. People love gossip and like to spread the word about how BAD something is.

For some stupid reason, it's sometimes unable to read my copy of Table Tennis and it has never been able to play Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (by the time I tried GRAW, my warranty already expired so I can't return it). It freezes on me at a higher rate than any console I've ever played (freezes about once or twice a day).Technoweirdo

Use the warranty or ebay it off to some other $ucker.

Um you should have a one year warrenty and GeoW came out like 7 months ago. You still got a couple of months buddy better get itreplaced for one with the new cooling.

Sadly, even if I did have a one year warranty (which I don't), warranties require the receipt as well (which I lost).

You are going to lose your entire investment. Start thinking of other uses for your 360 like as a paper-weight.

[QUOTE="osirisomeomi"]I'd be interested to see the market's reaction if this news aboutthe xbox reliability problems got out beyond the hardcore community. It'd probably do serious damage to the xbox. Everyone would say 'no, I don't want a faulty console!' What Sony should do is run some surveys, see if the xbox really has serious reliability problems and publicize them.Kekira

Telling people how reliable it is helps to. People love gossip and like to spread the word about how BAD something is.

Yeah, they should make a commercial like the Windows vs Mac. I was afraid of it when MS announced that would enter the console market years ago.MS is great at making UI but their OS does crashes from time to time. And it looks like it carries over to the 360 too. Luckily my xbox is still ok without the warranty too.

My 360 keeps overheating even though it has plenty of space. It'll just stop working for days at a time. I believe the failure rate is higher than they say.

JiveT

They also extended my warranty till 09. However I do beleive the problem is obviously bigger than they want to admit. My 360 will be here tomorrow from repair and I think I'll ask the ups guy if he/she has been returning a lot of 360's. Not sure if they will tell me but it's worth a shot. If anyone knows how many are breaking it's ups....
