Okay so this article/writer is a bit snarky to say the least but I found it funny anyway and worthy of some SW fun.:P

The Story.

Microsoft thinks Sony is a dirty liar, questions PSN numbers screenshot

Recently, Sony proudly boasted that the PlayStation Network had surpassed 20 million members, putting its numbers ahead of Xbox Live by a cool 3 million. Well, it's been a while since we had the two companies tugging each others' hair and giving out dead legs in the schoolyard, so naturally a Microsoft spokesman came out to question the numbers and accuse Sony of filthy, rotten lies.

"When we talk about our numbers we feel they're active users who are actively engaged in all the forms of entertainment we offer on Xbox 360," explains MS UK's Stephen McGill. "I think if you look at the comments made on the forums, or the comments made by analysts at Screen Digest then there's questions over, well what does Sony's numbers really mean? Are they duplicates? I think there's a lot of questions there.

"All I'm really worried about is, I know I'm the largest online video on demand service in the UK, we are worldwide, we've got a great online service the others can't come close to. They're not right now. When you think of our heritage as a company Microsoft has proven we are probably the only company in the world that can offer great online experiences for millions and millions and millions of people. And that's what we do every day with Xbox LIVE.

"Sony do what Sony want to do and if they think that's right for their business to say those kind of numbers then they can do and will do whatever they want to do. Do I believe them? No."

In other news, Microsoft knows Sony's dad, and is going to tell him that the publisher has been scrumping apples. We have extended the child metaphor in a biting satire of the infantile behavior of multimillion dollar companies, a babyishness which we do, admittedly, perpetuate by publicizing it.

Well that's expected... They're just countering Sony's latest PR spin. There's probably little truth in neither Sony's nor Microsofts statement

because we dont know which is false or not, so its best to assume they are both false and dismiss both. These corporates are no better than politicians, they are all liars. all they do is hype themselves, and unfortunately people believe the hype.

Maybe if MS didn't charge for their online service their numbers would go up. Until then they can just be happy with 2nd place.

If sony is lieing I apolgize for this statement. I actually can't beleave MS gaming division would let a PR say somthing like that. Common sense would tell you that more users were gonna be on PSN I mean its free and esy too hook up. MS should be happy it has millions of gold subscribers because that shows people really enjoy it(or don't have a choice). But in the end PSN is free so a lot of people are gonna have a bunch of ID's(not me personally) but you understand, like somone mentioned above both of them are companies they don't care about us so the will lie and lie untill we stop listening.

How do you know? Truth is we dont. People make multiple accounts on the 360 as well to get some free XBL. And I am not sure but aren't Silver accounts counted as well. I mean there is an arguement as against both sides numbers.

^ Yes. Truthfully we just don't know, as the numbers are internal, and only released every so often. Saying 360 has more members online makes little sense, as all accounts are online be it Live Gold or PSN.

well, PSN is for both PS3 and PSP so technically you have two consoles accessing the service. I know lemmings act like that is some sort of rebuttal to the number, but I don't think it matters at all. It just means Sony was smart to have one service for both PSP and PS3. And I'm pretty sure that you can access XBL through PC as well as 360 so their numbers may be more than just 360 members as well.

Second, PSN is completely free and you have to sign up for an account if you ever want anything off the store like demos, trailers, add-ons, etc. Free sign up plus free demos, downloads,trailers, sometimes add-ons, friends, trophy lists, etc? Seems only reasonable that a high percentage of users would create accounts. There is absolutely no reason for any PS3/PSP user NOT to. There is nothing to lost and everything to gain.

It's from Sony's recent consolidation of "Playstation Underground" account to "Playstation Network" accounts on Playstation.com, as well as PS3 PSN IDs. It's not all from the PS3. It's from Playstation.com as well.

Well, PSN is free so I guess it's obvious that the number of member is higher. If MS only counts the gold members that is.

I'm a gold subscriber to XBL and I haven't been on since last Fall when Gears 2 came out. I played hoarde mode with my friend one day and that's all I've done for the last few months. So no MS, your numbers are not active players.

PS2 = 140M+

PSP = 45M+

PS3 = 21M+

Why is it so hard for them to believe there is over 20M PSN accounts? :|

Sony doesn't give specifics as to how those numbers spread out between the systems and if some of those accounts are duplicated on single consoles.

On the other hand, MS hasn't provided those stats either.

Personally, I have 4+ accounts on both systems.

People use PSN to download games and various other things so it's not really like microsoft should feel the need to lie about this. They're being silly.

Okay so this article/writer is a bit snarky to say the least but I found it funny anyway and worthy of some SW fun.:P

Thoughts ?

(and MS doesnt lie?)

"When we talk about our numbers we feel they're active users who are actively engaged in all the forms of entertainment (if your an Amercian) we offer on Xbox 360," explains MS UK's Stephen McGill. "I think if you look at the comments made on the forums, or the comments made by analysts at Screen Digest then there's questions over, well what does Sony's numbers really mean? Are they duplicates? I think there's a lot of questions there.

"All I'm really worried about is, I know I'm the largest online video on demand service in the UK,(What?) we are worldwide, we've got a great online service the others can't come close to.

MS touts its number as 17 million yet just over half are gold members.

No, this is incorrect and doesn't even make sense. If there are 28 million Xbox 360s sold, then how would there only be 8 million Gold members? They issued a press release in January that stated they have 17 million Gold members plus, logically speaking, this number makes a lot more sense than your estimate.

They issued a press release in January that stated they have 17 million Gold members plus, logically speaking, this number makes a lot more sense than your estimate.Lance_Kalzas
I'm not questioning your credibility, but I never recall MS saying they have 17 million GOLD subscribers. Take in account not all 360's are hooked up online, I'd say 17 million accounts for gold and silver subscribers. As far as I know, Microsoft has never confirmed just how many gold subscribers they have, and if they have, I'd like to see a link.

Well MS is dirty rotten to release a faulty console knowingly out to the public. Sony is supplying a free online service that allows for as many free accounts as wanted on each system. So those PSN account numbers aren't a lie.

MS lies about their numbers too. They should give us numbers for both gold and silver users, but instead, they bundle those two numbers together to get their numbers.

I think Microsoft has a point here. It makes sense that there would be 17 million active Xbox Live users in proportion to the total amount of 360s that have been sold worldwide, factoring in the probability that the owner has an internet connection (and broadband), and assuming they even have any interest in setting up and using the service(and you definitely don't need gold to enjoy the service). These factors alone would make MS' estimate pretty reasonable. For Sony to Have over 20 million users would mean that pretty much everyone with a PS3 has it connected to the internet, not considering the users who make multiple accounts.

Is it just me or does MS seem a little more "moody" than usual?

Because when a company make such a statement as Sony did, in which it may look like they are beating their competitors, its rival company's stocks, in this case MS's, can be affected. Microsoft counters saying it is a lie and that they are actually leading, so the damage is reduced to a minimum.
