Nintendo has been gobbling up market share based on a gimmick which is good for about 1 or maybe 2 genres, and mainly because of its cheap price. If Microsoft were smart, they would have lowered the price April 29 instead of rising it. Microsoft needs to start releasing games for non-gamers (like WarioWare, Brain Age, The Sims, etc. etc.) with easier controls if it wants to win this generation because Nintendo is catching up fast.

the wii has nothing to do with x360 or ps3.

the wii can sell 10 billion units and still lose the next-gen war.

Sales matter alot, this is why the PS2 was such a huge hit. PS1's brand name carried over the PS2. The Wii is becoming a huge brand name (possibly like iPod?).

Funny how you've claimed the Wii isn't current-gen, yet you say it's in direct competition.

Learn logic before you post.

Case in point, iPod is NOT the best MP3 player out there, but it is the slickest looking and people trust the name. Saying that the iPod will fail makes as much sense as saying that Nintendo will fail.

iPod is to Mp3 market as the Wii is to gaming market? We will have to see, but the comparison is very strong.

What's better than the iPod? iPod is easy to use, looks nice, pretty good battery life, video, best player (iTunes), etc. etc. But yeah brand name matters ALOT. This is why the PSP and PS3 haven't tanked to oblivion (yet).

It is NOT a current-gen console. The PS2 is also competing with the 360 (and winning).

The Wii isn't gobbling up market share.  It's creating a larger market, so your assumption that the market has stayed static and Nintendo is "stealing" available market share is fallacious.

Look at the types of games that both consoles are releasing.  They are not what I would call in "direct competition".

I love and use iPod. But other out there (Zune, iRiver) have a lot more functionality and capacity.

Once GTA4 and Halo 3 hit the Xbox 360, Wii won't even be on the radar. Two of the top IP's in NA, the largest gaming market, will be on the Xbox 360 this holiday, let's see what happens.

If Sony drops the 20GB PS3 to $400, then MS will not be able to survive without dropping their price. There would be no excuse for offering a DVD-based console for the same price as a Blu-Ray one with comparable features.

As I said, Microsoft needs to get to that "non-gamer" base Nintendo is targeting, if it truly wants to win the console wars. It needs more games like Guitar Hero, DDR, The Sims, WarioWare, Brain Age, Nintendogs, and more media features to attract a non-gamer base.

I don't know if this true. You can say that Halo sold a bunch of XBOXes, but how many more XBOXes "sold" when Halo 2 came out? Show me some stats. My hunch is that 80% or more of the people out there who want Halo 3 have already bought a 360. (just like a bunch of people bought a PS3 in anticipation for future games).

A game only "sells" systems in huge quantities when it is near the launch or if the system is relatively inexpensive.

You're forgetting price.  It can't achieve that goal with their price, and since Nintendo will always be cheaper and take this impetus given to it by the press for all it's worth, I can't possibly see them doing that.

In my OP I criticized Microsoft would RAISING the price of the 360 when they should be lowering it. Would they lose more money? Yes, but they need to gather up market share against Nintendo ASAP or Nintendo will win.

I don't think it's a good tactic regardless.  Non-gamers aren't going to gobble games up once they buy it.  Going for these non-gamers may move hardware, but not software, which is what MS needs to make profit.  Trying to attract non-gamers will just promote more losses from hardware sales.

It's not being phased out. It's being shipped less because currently, more people want the 60GB one. But over time I think that the 20GB will be much more appealing to more price-minded shoppers. If Sony drops the 20GB model to $450 it will be flying off the shelf. Or, they may discontinue the 20GB model and drop the 60GB one to $500. The features you get with the 60GB PS3 compared to what you get with the Premium 360 would more than justify the extra $100 you'd spend.

True, but with everyone bashing the PS3 due to the high price, to lower the price to which it can compare with the elite, people will pay the extra money due to all the extra features.

Bill Gates at one point mentioned that he thought Nintendo was their main competitor, but they have done little to battle Nintendo. By RAISING the price of the Xbox 360 to $480, they're basically trying to attack Sony. May of 2002, the PS2 had its first price drop, May of 2007 the Xbox 360 will have a price RISE. They're trying to attack Sony but what they don't understand is that Sony (Computer Entertainment) has ommited suicide, and they are no longer a threat.

I personalyl dont think the Wii is huge compitition cause of the age group its designed for. Im 24, i dont give a rats a s s about mario/luigi or thier inbred cousin Wario. I dont care about metriod or Zelda, or any of those. I want mass killing, huge epic battles. Now im not saying that the Wii doesnt have any title, but they are lacking in the adult games. 360/PS3 ahev a game for all ages, genres that you would need. The wii has the kew new motion thing, as i see the PS3 has, but the wii has some good ideas for the tenis games/football, where you have to swing, however, im a lazy bastard, and dont want to swing my arms around all night playing a damn game. Each system has speific titles for the console, Halos for Xbox, Crash and a few others for PS3, and mario abnd friends for Nintendo. allsystems have thier strong points over the next, and in turn all have a weakness as well. The people that yell that one sucks, is just narrow minded and not realizing that theres a group of people for each console, hence why they are still around. I would buy the Wii for my Kids, and a xbox & ps3 for me.

price rise?  an xbox 360 is 300 dollars, just as it has been since launch.Â
