This doesn't mean much. There are dozens of applications for that kind of technology that have *nothing* to do with gaming.

It was only matter of time before M$ tried to do that. All in all the end of serious gaming has begun.

This doesn't mean much. There are dozens of applications for that kind of technology that have *nothing* to do with gaming. PBSnipes

From the article that Kotaku links to:

"3DV Systems develops "virtual reality" imaging technology for digital cameras that it sells, called ZCams (formerly Z-Sense). Its main targets are the gaming market ("enjoy a genuinely immersive experience," the company says on its Web site).

Now that graphics have become so advanced, it explains, the key to making a real difference lies in how you can control the game. The ZCam lets players control the game using body gestures alone, rather as PlayStation's EyeToy does, or Microsoft's Vision or Nintendo's Wii. 3DV Systems argues that its system is better than these, adding that you don't have to wear anything.

Microsoft apparently plans to use 3DV Systems' technology in its own gaming technology, probably in the Xbox 360."

Touche. Still, I'd argue it has more potential being used for presentations and the like than gaming.

that sounds like a good thing to me. as long as its not implemented in every single game.

No, instead of pressing the regular button for an action in the game, you get to make a motion movement, because its superior to what can be done in the press of a button normally.

Conform! Gaming with motion sensing technology makes everything better!

If they release it for the 360 it will be a bone headed move because it will have to be a peripheral and peripheral's always fail. It would be much smarter to release it as the standard for the new Xbox, but that would mean we would all be damned to a future of stupid body gesture gaming.

Bad news either way.

Yes, because motion sensing = casual.

If the wii is to be any lesson, it seems to propogate a lack of serious effort on the part of developers.

erm were you being sarcastic? its hard to tell :( I'd much prefer an efficient button press over some arbitrary hand motion to play NG2 or other hardcore games. that said I wouldn't mind family games and other friendly casual games embracing motion control technology.lol.

After looking at the product description, this is sounding less interesting and more gimmicky to me. It's basically the same thing as an Eye-Toy, only more advanced, so there's not many practical uses for it that I can see.

Microsoft would be stupid not to do this, and this does not mean an end to "traditional" gaming. All it means is that MS is expanding. If motion sensing was to be put in place on the next Xbox console, MS will prob incorporate a mix of traditional control styles with motion sensing. I mean, motion-sensing controls can be beneficial (if properly implimented) in FPS, sports and racing games. I'd like the option, though

 I don't remember throwing a fit. But then I don't tend to remember anything I said on System Wars a week after the fact.

To answer your question: yes, I think this is gimmicky, unlike the Wiimote. As I said, it's just an Eye-Toy on steroids, and the Eye-Toy was never used in a non-gimmicky way as far as I know. Maybe I just don't understand the tech properly, but it seems like it's not really meant to be a control method for a real game; it looks more like something a "game" would be built for.

I find it ironic than in console realm motion sensing = casual gaming. While in PC gaming motion sensing= ultra hardcore gaming

The only reason the Wiimote succeeded was because it was standard with the console (and even though it succeeded it killed the console imo), if this comes out for the 360 it will be a junky peripheral like eye toy or the powerglove. MS needs to start focussing on more and better first party game releases and stop wasting their time with this motion BS.

MS definitely needs to pull more attention towards making games (not saying their current games are bad, but the more the merrier). However, we do not know whether or not (for certain) if this tech will be used for the 360 or the "next" xbox console, and we don't know how much emphasis will be placed on this technology

What "killed" the console (I assume you're referring to the shovelware) was its substandard graphical capabilities, not the controller. Yes, the motion-sensing was casual-friendly and thus naturally attracted a lot of crap gimmick games (repeat: gimmick GAMES, not control method), but there's no reason why it shouldn't have been a perfectly valid platform with the Wiimote.

Well consoles are going to have to evolve somehow. Processing power can only go so far. The next true step is motion controls or virtual reality.

If MS wants it to fly they're going to have to make it standard with the next Xbox like Nintendo did with the Wiimote and that will kill the next Xbox. I'm done with console gaming if the big three are all featuring gesture based controls next gen.

Gesture based gaming ftl. *pukes*

I'd rather sit on my ass and enjoy playing a game then have to move around like an idiot the entire time. The Wii is bad enough but even with that you can play without too much motion.

[QUOTE="goblaa"][QUOTE="TheNextOrder"]Its a freakin eyetoy. Keep this crap away from the best console of this generation. Please.TheNextOrder

If you know so much about it, then explain how it works...oh, wait you don't.

It's a lot more than an eye toy. You can literaly crawl into a game and explore the world.

I'd rather sit on my ass and enjoy playing a game then have to move around like an idiot the entire time. The Wii is bad enough but even with that you can play without too much motion.

From watching the vid, I don't think you'd have to stand up at all. The focus is mostly on hand motions.
