I guess so. But that's still quite alot of sales lost.
People could get angry and just buy a PS3 or Wii instead of waiting for shipments of Xbox 360s.

                 Nothing new and I predict the 14 million is well within reach by sometime mid year 07 while the other consoles are still trying get a second wind !

So they expect to probably have 14-15 Million by the end of 2007 while PS3 will probably be over 10 Million by the end of 2007, only 4-5 Million shy of 360 in 07 and probably Catch up and surpass in 2008. 360 is selling bad.
Bottom line here is this. 2 things here. Either Microsoft really didn't sell 10 million by the end of '06 (very likely, remember all that talk about first console to 10 million wins the war) or Microsoft's sales have just slowed down to a snails pace. (it's possible. But this is just slow, even for the Xbox 360)

The shipped numbers are only reported quarterly. It's more likely than both of your scenarios that, rather than try to tally up the amount that has been sent to retailers between the beginning Decemeber and now, they would use their old number from the previous quarter. When this quarter ends you will have updated shipped numbers. Anyone that knows business knows that this is how it works.

It's fairly obvious that this is due to one or both of two possible factors:
1)Â MS is releasing a new 360 model and is trying to clear the shelves of the old ones first.
2)Â MS over-shipped last holiday season to try and force-meet their 10M goal, and now the retailers aren't ordering any more while the extra stock sells off.

they probably stopped making old xbox and are making zephr and once the announce zephr nobody is going to buy old xbox any way they might reach 20 mill by end of year because of halo and what not
Welcome to DEC 2006 cows when it was announced... I guess their was too much ownage yesterday over motorstorm that you had to unearth old news to divert attention.
remember were talking SHIPPED not sold. they expect to have shipped 12-15 million by june. the reason they like to say sold but forget to say to consumers is because they usually have to sell them to the distributors (ebgames, gamestop, bestbuy, etc.) and then the distributors sell them. so sometimes we get confused because technically the consoles are sold but maybe only half to three quarters of that number are to actual consumers.

wii-cheaper and better market. because it appeals to just about anyone at any age. ps3- the most expensive, no games yet, and only loyal cows (fb) will buy it. 360-in between, got a year advantage which is good for game developing, has lots of good games out and yet to come. when all 3 systems get better titles there sales will go up. its a slow time of the year so systems wont sell all that well for the most part. the reason the ps2 outsold the 360 is because it was like what a fraction of the cost and had a amazingly awesome game library considering it was basically at the end of its life.
It could be a factor of a few things: They may have realized demand has slowed for the 360 and increased for the PS3/Wii, and they're probably clearing the way for the Zephyr version of the 360.
