How do you like the multiplat era?

did you prefer the way it was "back in the days" or you like the fact that no matter if you got a ps3 or an xbox 360, you can pretty much enjoy the majority of the games out there on your system?

I see it both as a benefit and a disadvantage at the same time. Sony, thanks to its efforts and investments on 1st party titles has been trying to give its system a clear identity, while Microsoft is more into the timed exclusives thing. Maybe this way it's more profitable for Microsoft, relying mainly on cross-platform games, limiting the costs to fund their 1st party high budget titles.

It's also true that thanks to Microsoft's strategy, many Sony's strongholds like Final Fantasy and Tekken became cross-platform games.

so what about the few real exclusives? Imo, they're now more important than ever, maybe the most important factor whether you'd choose ps3 over 360 and viceversa.

and what about the Pc and the Wii?

I think those are the systems where you can truly rely on exclusive games, whether they're garbage or not, it's where you can still find some clear identity.

I'd like to quote something a pc gamer said, which may help clarify my point:

Honestly people are so used to the idea that PC gaming is in trouble that they never question it, it's just a given, a default position. But the moment I suggest console gaming isn't too healthy these days; they freak out. What? Console gaming in trouble? Ha! The idea is ludicrous to them. They don't need any evidence to declare PC gaming dead, but they will completely disregard all the evidence you present the console market isn't doing too good; because they reject the idea outright.

This is reflected in all their arguments, they are completely uninterested in looking at anything that suggests something is wrong with console gaming, to the point that they make a fool of themselves with some of their arguments.

Take for instance this line we hear all too often "PC developers fleeing to consoles". Anyone with eyes would recognise the cross platform orientation of this generation, they will recognise a significant number of games are going cross platform on both console and PC. But some people are just so unable to look a little closer to home they actually only note the PC games going cross platform, its ridiculous and I don't know why this highly flawed argument is perpetuated on the console end to this day.

When I look at the console market today I see multi billion dollar companies unable to attract exclusive 3rd party development; were as a platform that offers them no financial incentives can. I see supposedly popular platforms having to pay game developers to remain exclusive while PC takes the lead in exclusives. I see consoles being treated like a cross platform dumping ground, as shown by the exclusive to cross platform ratio, an accusation that still gets used against PC despite it being truer about consoles. I see console companies having to pay for exclusive content in cross platform games; while some developers bring PC exclusive benefits in their games without being paid a penny.

People try their very best to drag the image of PC gaming through the muck; and yet time and time again I see this supposedly dying platform stands head and shoulders above the multi billion dollar investments consoles are getting. What are you going to say? What could any of you possibly say to me that is going to diminish how I view my platform when I see the console business model falling apart right in front of me? Every criticism out there doesn't change what is in fact going on. You can talk about piracy and sales and all the doom preaching all you want, you can even pull the preference card and try to pass it off as everyones opinion, PC is still here and it is out performing consoles in developer support.

What more is there to say?

This is one funky multiplat era.

One thing that is good about exclusives is that the developer doesn't have to worry aobut any other specs, they can create and maximize the game for the system they choose. They can really eek out the most juice that way.

Case in Point :

Super Mario Galaxy, CRYSIS, MGS4, Killzone 2, Fable 2, Halo Reach, Wii Sports Resort, GeoW, and Uncharted 2.

It's a very good time for being a PS3 or 360 owner. Multiplats are quite amazing. Though it's not exaclty thanks to MS.

the higher the development cost is the less likely the final product will be a system-only exclusive, unless it's funded by Sony, Ms or Nintendo.

it can't be "back in the days", neither Sony nor Microsoft can shell out an enormity of money to release many high-budget exclusive games.

I think its great. Exclusives don't benefit gamers in anyway. If it were up to me all games who be multiplat, and you would simply pick the system that had the extra features you require, whatever that may be.

Exclusives are better for companies and multiplats for gamers. I prefer multiplats since it means there are more games i can play

Competition is not in itself good. It has to be good competition otherwise the market becomes crap. M$ = bad competition.

I think his point was that it's silly to say that Microsoft's been "globalizing" gaming when a developed country, like Poland, doesn't have Xbox Live. I just think you named the thread wrong ;P

I've always had mixed feeling about all the multiplats.

On one hand, it gives more people the chance to play the games which is great. On the other, I can't help but feel the PS3 and 360 have less personality than the Xbox and PS2 had.

Sony has a huge advantage with their first party. It makes Microsoft look bad having 90% multiplat games.

If the consoles distinguish themselves the content will as well. If they don't, then nintendo will forever walk away with the market.

a major reason Multiplat developement has become more normal is to do with the current economic situation more end users means more sales simple thats caused games to go multiplat people can play it down saying x companied paid off y...but that aint the case they are buisness's they want to make money to keep stockholders happy simpe.

While it's true that Microsoft has done better this gen than last gen, I really wish that people would stop using that "MS buys a lot of 3rd party games" excuse. That statement is so old, it isn't even funny. The only time I heard of them "buying exclusives" was for Tales Of Vesperia & loaning Rockstar $50 million for a timed exclusive of GTA 4 Lost & Damned episodes.

The thing is, it's a lot more costly to develop games for both the 360 & PS3. Why do you think that we've been seeing a lot of games being multiplatform between each other? 3rd party exclusives have been dead from the start of this gen.

While they have gotten away with better sales for this gen, I doubt that they'll get away with it in the next one.

is "globalizing" really the word you're looking for? because that makes the original post make no sense.
