Congratulations!

Famitsu, the biggest and most influential gaming maganize in Japan has crowned Ghost of Tsushima Critics Game of the Year 2020, voted by 132 Japanese game creators and personalities!

What's even more amazing about it is that Ghost of Tsushima is a foreign game, and getting such critical accolade is such a huge honor! Quite an honor beating Animal Crossing which is a phenomenon in Japan, one of best selling game ever there. Switch is a casual and kid friendly system makes sense games like it and Mario sold well.

Congratulations, the people who voted includes very well known names in the industry from:-

  • Atlus Katsura Hashino
  • Capcom Yasunori Ichinose
  • Koei Tecmo Games Shibusawa Kou
  • Square Enix Yoshinori Kitase
  • Square Enix Naoki Yoshida
  • Sega Moriji Aoki
  • Nippon Ichi Software Sayaka Oda
  • PlatinumGames Hideki Kamiya
  • HAL Laboratory Shinya Kumazaki
  • Grasshopper Manufacture Goichi Suda

And so many more that makes up the 132 votes. Congratulations again to Ghost of Tsushima and Sucker Punch for the accolades, can't wait for their next projects!

*Ghost of Tsushima is only available on PS4/PS5.

At least this will put to rest the Western gamer nonsense that Famitsu or the Japanese are ethnocentric.

*Update: Tweet from famitsu.

Oh top 5 below btw. Yes Sakuna made it! Loved the game, surprise hit of the year alongside 13 Sentinel: Aegis Rim. Highly recommends both.

  1. Ghost of Tsushima
  2. Animal Crossing
  3. Final Fantasy 7 Remake
  4. Sakuna: Of Rice and RRuin
  5. Fall Guy

This is what happens when true gaming insiders get together and vote, like the oscars where actual people on the ground level are voting. People in the industry this is the GOTY that mattered imo you got people from square people from there who cares what ign or gamespot or TGA says these guys are in the industry making games saying this ones the best I think we can take this a little higher here.

@sakaixx: As anyone on this forum talked about Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin? Perhaps it was not hyped because it was multi-platform and that it is a new Japanese-developed IP.

There is already enough discussion on this forum on Cyberpunk 2077, and I would like to see gamers here talk about other games.

I know these awards are all phony when Streets of Rage 4 isn't even nominated anywhere.

Shouldn't you be congratulating Ubisoft, without them you wouldn't have AC Japan lol.

Also who would of thought that a game set in Japan won an award in Japan, i mean that's just crazy LOL.

@i_p_daily: oh Japan is only relevant whenever 3rd party and non nintendo games pops up in the charts. Its pretty dead over there only super casual games for kids Nintendo games recycling the top 10 charts. Sakuna the surprise hit only makes the top 10 one week there before dropping off to oblivion.

Awesome. In other news, a team of excavators in Japan have found a black box with a X on it and are wondering what the hell it is. The item was apparently found in a landfill.

I was blown away when I played it on launch and Ghost of Tsushima is easily my favorite PS4 game of 2020 and I really enjoy the gameplay more so than TLOU2 to say the least. Congrats to Ghost of Tsushima as Japan's GOTY but the fact the game takes place in Feudal Japan era, the choice was obvious to be GOTY.

What an honor! It‘s obviously a bit tricky to make a game about another country’s culture. Must be pretty cool to get the endorsement from the top creative talents of said country. Well done Sucker Punch!

Well-deserved. I remember Japanese creators like Nagoshi, the producer of Sega's Yakuza series, praised Ghost of Tsushima a lot.

Also, kudos to Animal Crossing for being the second place, someone close to me really enjoying the dumb game.

@mrbojangles25: It looks like the kind of exclusive that could be ported to PC. Open world, action adventure, new IP, Sony Studio, first entry. Just like HZD. Don't get your hopes up though.

You're in for a treat! I don't want to spoil anything but there's a special moment in that game. You'll know it when it happens. Best thing I've seen in a game in a while.

One minute cows don't care about Japan, next a Sony game wins an award in Japan and Japan becomes relevant again to cows.

The flip flopping is off the charts 🤣🤣🤣

Reminds me of The Last Samurai. An American-made production about Feudal Japan that was very well-received in Japan, but not quite as well-received in the West.

The success of Tsushima in Japan also coincides with the record-breaking success of the Demon Slayer manga/anime franchise in Japan. There's been a major revival of Japanese interest in pre-modern Japanese settings, so Tsushima came along at just the right time. But then again, it could just be part of a wider global revival, with Feudal Japan games like Nioh, Sekiro and Tsushima just as successful in the West.

Well, in the west, it seems that the parody of samurai culture in the virtual world is more popular than the setting in Feudal Japan. You know we enjoy things like the Lightsaber battles in The Mandalorian and even the sword battle between Cloud and Sephiroth in FF7R that are essentially influenced by Japanese sword fighting in an extreme way. But yeah, I hope there will be more games set in actual Feudal Japan than those superficial ones.

I agree. Despite the popularity of Feudal/warring states era Japan, there is not many games based on it especially recently. Been clamoring for open world samurai games for years and somehow only Sucker Punch dared to take the challenge.

I'm pretty Demon Slayer is supposed to take place in the Meiji or Taisho Era (I do get your point though).

Don't forget ninjas. Many today barely even associate ninjas with feudal Japan anymore. And the same could be said for the katana (a.k.a. samurai sword) to an extent. When something becomes so mainstream, the original context often gets forgotten in the process. But every once in a while, you get some pop culture works that revive mainstream interest in the feudal Japan setting, whether it's anime like Naruto or Demon Slayer, or games like Sekiro and Tsushima.

Speaking of Japanese sword fighting, you could say that's more-or-less the basis for hack & slash combat systems in modern action games. The roots of modern hack & slash combat systems can be traced back to Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which in turn was heavily inspired by Japanese sword fighting.

I know. But the Meiji and Taisho eras were like a transition period between feudal Japan and modern Japan. So Meiji/Taisho era manga/anime like Kenshin and Demon Slayer might not technically be set in feudal Japan, yet they still partially have some of the look and feel of feudal Japan.
