Not all of them, but the overall majority of them. By that, I mean, they don't seem to have much "substance" when you play them. They don't feel "alive" because they don't lack any real "story".

I'm not saying that these types of games are not fun or bad, but does anybody else agree more often than not that these genres lack games with substance and they are often dull or unsatisfying as a result (compared to other games).

As long as a game is fun, I don't care about story. Story is nice and necessary in certain genres, but not needed in others.

Fun. Just give me fun and I'm happy. :)

Games that let you do anything you want with no point. Kind of like Garry's Mod for Half-Life 2.

I think whatever game you like, whether story based, sport game, mini game, mix of them, or none of them, go for it.

Oh like GTA or Crackdown, yeah i like the feeling of freedom of those games but without any story or plot to follow they are pointless. Is not like i want extremly linear games but c'mon at least tell me what i suppose to do.

Agreed. It's why I prefer story driven games. I do like some sandbox games, though. Such as TES and GTA.

Well no. Not like GTA or crackdown. Those are free-roamers, they have a point, to an extent. I'm trying to think of a better example, but the only two sandbox games I've played were Garry's Mod and Sandbox mode in Rollercoaster Tycoon 3.

you need to get out more if you think sports games are dull. oh by hte way...who wants to feel alive in a video game????? thats what real life is for.

Like when you play a game lets say Rollercoaster with all the resources, space and stuff where you can do whatever you want until it bores you because there isnt any challenge at all?.

I never said they were dull. But they are the equivalent of eating a cheeseburger instead of a steak. Hey, I'm not knocking sports games at all. I'm that sucker that buys the new FIFA, Madden, and 2K sports games every year. I'm just saying I wish more games would concentrate on "story" and bringing characters to life. Without that, I can only play the genres I mentioned for short bursts otherwise I'll be easily distracted and grow board even in multiplayer. But I can sit through a game like Halo or a game like Gears of War or KOTOR or Oblivion, and lose track of time. The genres that I mentioned don't let me do that.

Personally... I feel the same about almost every other FPS out and heck any shooter. It's all the same, there's no real story that's engrossing, and most of all it's just repetitive in each game. Frankly... every game is worn out, but the best games are those that have life and feel alive. Even the mini games, like you said not all, have soul and substance. Do a majority have em? Well perhaps, but then again.. minigames and sports games really don't rely on stories. Sandbox types like GTA or Crackdown may not have a great one, but do have one that makes you wish to play the game or events that are engrossing.

If it's fun, I'll play it. Warioware, GTA, whatever, if it's fun, I'll play it, soul or no soul. Of course, story is a hugely important part of a game to me, so if it doesn't have that 'soul', it better be fun as hell.
