REDMOND, Wash. - Sept. 22, 2008 - Microsoft Corp. celebrates its second anniversary of the Games for Windows initiative this month with the news that the year's biggest blockbuster, "Grand Theft Auto IV" (Rockstar Games), will debut on the PC this November exclusively as a Games for Windows-branded title, joining a growing list of more than 85 top PC games from today's hottest publishers. Liberty City comes to life through a revitalized Games for Windows - LIVE experience, including expanded online matches, cutting-edge DirectX 10 graphics, and new LIVE features such as a redesigned game interface, out-of-game client and marketplace.

They made it free because it was flopping. MS has already shown the direction they want to go with online; so I'm not interested. I'll stick with the services that want to keep online gaming free.

Flops confirmed. They should give it up already, GFWL has a bad rep among PC gamers as does pretty much everything else Xbox related. I can already guarantee that GTA4 Online will NOT have a strong community nor will it offer a deeply customized multiplayer experience. And GFWL does not offer a unified friends list since only fraction of games support it.

I cant agree more

I don't mind Windows Live as long as it's free (and it is). I play Gears of War, Shadowrun, and Lost Planet Extreme Colonies on Windows Live. It's far from the future of PC however. Too many independent developers will not support it due to it not being an open online component. It's not too bad though. I borderline like it as long as it's free. :)

They snubbed PC gaming, and now come back in order to push windows as a pc gaming brand name, essentially trying to indirectly sell off more copies of vista.

Well, I'm encouraged and willing to play along with GFWL.

Steam is great, but I certainly feel no obligation to it, if (IF) something else can come along to favorably match up with it's features, fine by me. The redesigned interface with an out-of-game client + marketplace at least sound like a solid start towards improvement.

Now just as long as GFWL and it's upcoming supporting titles, don't pull any DRM shenanigans --- like you know who.

Give gamers reasons to want to bring their games online with legit versions for some great features, don't force it on them, and don't take away freedoms (e.g. via limited-installs) from honest customers that have been enjoyed for a long time.

They made it free because no PC gamer is dumb enough to pay for that. PC gaming has always been free (excluding MMO's) and no PC gamer (including myself) was willing to pay. Hence, they made it free.

Wasn't the GTA 4 sales purely hype driven and most people got bored of the game due to repetition? Microsoft is boasting about this coming to PC?

It will be free.. And if you have ever played the original DoW multiplayer, you would see this as a blessing instead of them using the PoS Gamespy system again.. Man that system was AWFULLLL..

Misconception, devs can use dedicated servers if they want to. Heck, even Halo 2 has them.

its fun to unlock the achievements just like its fun to play games. as long as is its not obsessive it does add a bit to the experience. for me personally its not about bragging right i just enjoy unlocking them.

so its like xbox 360 with a new thing like steam but with ur gamertag... i don't like the look of that. i have steam already that is alright.

it sounds like a flop for haivng to buy things just like xbox 360 themes. i want a pc experience, download mods for games.

gfwl has always been free, the only thing that wasnt was the ability to play cross-platform (xbox to pc), and a few other random features but you could always play online from the moment it was released for free.

Does everyone know there is a new interface coming out soon? The current one isn't that good. Lots of developers will be using WIndows Live soon.
