Epic Games has already been reeling from a number of developers complaining about the Unreal Engine 3, and now another one has cropped up. Mistwalker Studios, makers of Blue Dragon, has something to say about the game engine as well.

Ars Technica's Frank Caron was able to chat with Hees Kyung, global product manager for Microsoft, and was able to ask regarding Lost Odyssey. According to Kyung, their team encountered some problems with the Unreal Engine 3:

The issue was that Epic kept updating the versions, so it was hard to catch up. For example, if they released Unreal Engine 3, version 6.1, which has certain requirements and limitations for graphics, you wouldn't have the tools. It was hard to get the tools and instruments necessary to produce the most updated versions of our software.

Kyung also mentioned some language barrier problems with their staff - Mistwalker is a Japanese company. Add that to the updates and anybody will probably have a hard time keeping up.

We've heard what the other devs (Silicon Knights and Digital Extremes) had to say about Unreal Engine 3. We'll have to wait and see what Epic Games plans to do, though the other devs don't seem to have any plans of suing like Silicon Knights. Stay tuned for further developments.

Huxley is basically using UE2.5 with UE3 modifications, its not full UE3.

Unfortunately most devs are having trouble with UE3 for the simple fact its an unfinished engine, most dev teams have taken whatever they've had and extensively modified them. Why dev teams didn't just create there own instead of using an unfinished engine is beyond me, it may save costs but it doesn't give you the versitily of a self made engine.

Heh, it's bad because it's constantly updated? Well, if it's so hard to keep up, just stay with the version you've started with. If that version wasn't good enough, why would you want it in the first place, right?

And lol @ language barrier. Can't understand English and they're professional developers? =\

Because every version is better, meaning you're obviously going to upgrade because it won't cost you any money and should make your final product better. And whats so funny about the language barrier? You do know that Japanese people speak, well, Japanese. Not English. So yes there is a meaningful language barrier. Some of the best developers out there either can't speak english or arnen't very fluent.

Because Bioware is ran byJesus himself. Its the only logical explanation for a developer to be that awesome. You could give those guys a text based RPG's "engine" and they'd still come out with something that looks better than 95% of other games.

Every version is better, but every version is sufficient as-well. You don't complain if someone gives you option, right? I think lemmings would agree to that, heh.

As for the barrier, you went ahead and assumed I'm a native English speaker, I'm not. And I don't have a high-school diploma either. So there goes your "well, Japanese". I'm just saying that when the majority of the market is English (language), the majority of gamers play English games, and the coding is most probably English, you might as-well know English as a game-developer/coder.

First off, remember that not everyone lives in the US. Knowing english is not the most important skill for a japanese video game programmer. The writer and project lead, they should know english. But the programming monkeys in the closet? They might not be as fluent, and it's alright.

Then it comes another problem: It's not reading Stephen King. Software documentation can be quite harsh even for native speakers - it's a very technical document, after all. Add to this a non-native speaker with a fundamentally different language system, and you're in for a lot of confusions, no matter how high his TOEFL score is.

It's easy to criticize whatever engine with which you're developing. The only company with serious issues is Silicon Knights which claims that Epic abandoned them and neglected contractural obligations.

sure you can. development resources are not unlimited. if you are given a budget and a deadline you can only do so much. it you have to spend a lot more time on an Engine than you expected and were promised then you have less resources for other aspect of the game.

Jesus, so one of the complaints is because no one speaks Japanese for Epic? Ah, well why doesn't anyone speak English over there at Mistwalker then? lol, language barrier problems is a reason to bash Epic now? Let's sue them because the Epic devs don't speak Japanese....good one. I suppose someone is going to sue next because they can't speak Spanish.
