Ok let me disprove this 1up.com's review. Since I have the game I think I have the rights to say what is true and what is false.
First.... MLB 2k7 set visual standard? With poor frame rates and horrible looking crowd? Personally, I thought NBA 2k7 looked much better in just about every way and that should be better used as visual standards with solid frame rates, detailed players and crowds, and excellent stadium. MLB 2k7 does none of this except detailed player models when it is in still motion. If face of a player is all that matters, I guess what they say is true.
1up.com said average graphics. Well yes MLB 07 does have average graphics, on the par with Virtua Tennis. However, it certainly isn't poor graphic for early PS3 game. character models are around the level of Call of Duty 3 and crowd looks so much better than MLB 2k7, and it make large difference when you are experiencing the game. Also with solid frame rate, I found MLB 07 better looking of the two. Perhaps 360 version of MLB 2k7 is different, but as for PS3 version that I've played, MLB 07 is overally better graphically than MLB 2k7 if you consider everything including the frame rates. Yes the field looks terrible and flat, but so does Virtua Tennis. It does make large difference but I'd rather have solid frame rates and better crowd does outweighs it quite a bit.
I got to give to 1up.com. Flag does look ugly. However, does it matter that something you see 2 seconds in one game (not all game because some stadiums don't show flags) matter that much? Why not talk about the crowd you constantly see in both 2k7 and 07?
Then 1up.com mentions no replay. Huh? This game is full of replay. Just about every big plays (strike outs, or outs in general, and every hit) it shows a replay. Perhaps unlike me, they didn't have the option on...
Then it goes on mentioning animation. Ball magically warping to fielder's gloves? Haven't seen this happening. Only time I saw something like this happening was when umpire is giving the ball to the catcher when ball goes out foul. It is minor animation to fill the gap and it goes get slightly annoying, but I've yet to see anything like what 1up.com have mentioned.
Also they talk about long animation... hmmm I haven't seen any unneeded animation that is so long it ruins the gameplay. Or does this writer think in real life, these baseball players magically go from picking up the ball frame to throw frame and omit any movement in between? It takes time for players to pick up the ball and go through the motion so they can throw the ball.... I have no clue what they are complaining about.
Also they mentioned lack of ball spinning when it hits the field. What are they expecting? The ball to jump all over like football? I have to say the ball moves very realistically, for instance, when batters hit the ball too high (which would give great spin on the ball) then the ball does indeed bounce off the ground or bat like football and takes big angle. However fly ball or ground ball moves like it should, according to the physics. I don't think I saw ground ball bouncing all over the place due to a spin so I have no clue what 1up.com is trying to say here. Or are they talking about how ball looks when it is on the field? In that case, they must have incredible vision because the ball is so small it is hard to see every single detail of the ball on my 40" TV. They just look white, which should be realistic because if ball is spinning, it would be difficult to see red lining on the ball isn't it?
Then they talk about number of hits. Hmm. ground out, foul, fly out, home run, or whatever you can think of, they got it. What kind of baseball games 1up.com is watching? What are they expecting? I played about 30 games in Road to the Show mode so far (very addictive game I'd say) and I've not seen same hit twice. The angle was always different or when they hit the ground was always different, and the distance. Even foul balls doesn't look the same, so what the heck is 1up.com talking about? I have no clue.
Then they complain about button batting control. Finally they have some legitimate complains, although I am perfectly fine with button press batting control. Also they have guessing pitch, and guessing pitch location to give all the control you need that can be had with analog control or sixaxis control, so I see no problem.
Then they talk about runners..., and no they don't have the be that precise. Again I have no clue what they are talking about here. If anything, the base running in this game is more realistic than other baseball games.
Then as for their final comment they said MLB 07 didn't have the "real" baseball feeling. I think it certainly does have "real" baseball feeling especially with improved graphic over PS2 version it adds more to that. MLB 2k7 actually lacks "real" baseball feeling with huge number of home runs they catch by running up the wall like prince of persia.
In other words, 1up.com review fails completely. Well not completely but it fails mostly.
