The OnLive mobile app was just released minutes ago. You can download it now in the Android Marketplace.

I just downloaded it to my phone and I am using the service over wifi.

I'm playing DiRT 3 and it looks like each game has its own custom controls. For example, in DiRT 3, there's an accelerator knob and an analog stick. It's very responsive and I can't believe I'm doing this right now. The graphics look great on the small screen.

I will update this post as I play more games. Very interesting stuff.

UPDATE:

Here's the entire list of games that support custom touch controls:

  • 4 Elements
  • Ancient Spirits
  • ARES Exctinction Operation
  • Around the world in 80 days
  • Bastion
  • Cake Mania 3: Lights Camera Action!
  • Darksiders
  • Defense Grid
  • Dirt 3
  • Flock
  • Future Wars (not yet released)
  • Kingdom for Keflings (not yet released)
  • Lara Croft
  • Lego Batman
  • Lego HP 1-4
  • Lego HP 5-7
  • Mini Ninjas
  • Osmos
  • Puzzle Chronicles 2
  • Puzzle Quest
  • Royal Envoy
  • Space Chem
  • Split Second
  • Steel Storm
  • The Ball
  • The Maw
  • Virtua Tennis 2009
  • Warhammer 40K: Chaos Rising

Seems like a kind of bad idea to me. Don't most of these tablets have a bad battery life while watching videos and since it will be using wifi constantly that will drain the batter further.

With built-in controls like the Xperia Play.

Or get something far better, such as the Vita or 3DS.

What if I don't want to get that? What if I want to play games on what I have? If I have to buy new hardware to be able to play my games, that kind of defeats the purpose of OnLive, doesn't it?

finally, it's on a format that i can accept being blurry and not care about how terrible input lag is since the controls are already destroyed by being touchscreen.

i think onlive may have finally found its niche.

"If I have to buy new hardware..."

Well now, many of us would have to since it doesn't support below Android 2.3. Then we'd have to buy controllers since touch-screen controls will be able to work as well for games such as Darksiders. That itself seems pretty pointless to play something on a tiny-ass screen, phone or tablet.

Then you likely aren't able to run it. The market hides apps that your phone won't run.

OnLive is impressing me more as the days go on... Yet to pay anything, but the demos have become much more responsive (Saints Row 3 works very well), and they're really pushing it. Could see myself renting a title one day.

I guess this is cool for those interested in it. I am not. I have plenty of good games on my phone already, plus between Amazon's free app of the day and sales like what the market has now (picked up Asphalt 6 for 10 cent yesterday). I get all kinds for free and dirt cheap.

Realistically you'd only be using this over wifi, and you're stuck with touch screen controls. So it's not exactly that great.

yep. Onlive is Software as a Service (S.A.S.) many things are S.A.S now these days Enterprise software, to Movies/Music and to Games now. I'm currently still on a ADSL 2 network with 2.7 Mb on average speed for downloads, but i use a 4G Wireless for gaming, streaming and everything else and I get around 5 - 6 MB which is pretty good for this kind of thing. Transformer is the Hyrid Tablet/Laptop from Asus. The tablet itself is like 9 hours and the docking station/keyboard adds another 6 hours. IIRC.

The Transformer Prime is even better for streaming video. The Tegra 3 consumes less than half the energy when playing video and will give you a solid 12 hours of video playback.

So far, Lego Batman is the most playable game on my phone. The gameplay machanics are simple enough for it to translate well onto a touch screen.

The universal controller uses Wifi?

Does that mean the controller itself is connecting to OnLive and not your device?

That's genius.

I'm all for it. As a technophille and gamer the more avenues and/options of ways of gaming are available the better. gaming on a PC, console, handeld, mobile device, tablet, S.A.S., motion, 3D, voice, touch controls.... I really believe we are at the cusp of the golden age of gaming.

SW has a lot of things to contend with. Not saying people have to like what tech comes out, but denial or cognitive dissonance doesn't really resolve anything. Motion controls, 3D, mobile games, touch controls, Casuals... SW can often be 'Amish' with the rest of the video games world.

maybe it's available only for the U.S. http://toucharcade.com/2011/12/07/the-onlive-ios-client-is-finally-arriving/ 2.5MB heh? That's pretty good better then my paltry home connection 2.7Mb.
