Modern graphics are a far cry from being "good enough"

I've heard lots of people say "Graphics today are good enough" and loads of people have very low expectations for next generation consoles AND people say we've come to the age of diminishing returns... Have we reached a pinnacle in graphics?

Graphics could be better but they are fine. I want more powerful consoles not for graphics, but other things. What I want is a console that will allow an increase in things you can do, and an increase in performance. That's it. Sadly, no matter how powerful a console is, 60 fps will never be the standard as most devs will use the extra power for graphics and not framerate.

i don't understand the reasoning behind wanting super ultra realistic photograph graphics, imo games are fine and look very very good, i want next gen consoles to work on in increasing, enemy A.I, Longer Games, More enemies on screen, i could care less if the trees all have indivdually made leaves on them

With the increased budget to add AI and Enemies on screen, plenty of devs will still spend that on just putting prettier graphics up, blame the devs, not the hardware.

If by modern graphics, you mean what a top of the line PC can do, they yes I agree with you.

Diminishing returns on graphics simply means graphics don't scale linearly with hardware power. This doesn't mean we shouldn't keep pushing graphics or hardware, it just means that you aren't going to see huge gains in graphics through raw power alone.

I think its around the time consoles moved to the next gen (5 year cycles and all), but its not like with older consoles. Today's console games, despite their age are still capable of pulling off great visuals that can match the medium setting on a PC (such as The Witcher 2 and Crysis 2) at a good 30fps. Then you also have the constant firmware and system updates as well as patches that keep the consoles fresh and dated.

I think we still have 1 or 2 more years of life out of current consoles before they really get dated.

Last gen seems to be the last gen where my favorite genre was actually feasible. In my mind, there was no need for even this gen.

You guys know what is better than a game with great gameplay? A game with great gameplay and crysis graphics. And excellent physics, and fantastic AI. When the technology behind the game, opens new gameplay mechanics, e.g., destruction in the battlefield games, physics puzzles in Half-Life 2. The great physics of half-life wouldn't be possible on outdated (for the time) hardware, and just imagine what battlefield 4 and it's destruction will look like, when bf3 looks like that.

I feel like cars have looked better than most other things when run on the same tech, so I'd rather see something more common used to show off graphical power.

Otherwise, I don't think anyone thinks graphics can't improve greatly from what they are, but rather the cost of doing so would likely just make it an extraordinarily rare occurence, so as to make upgrading seem not worth it anyway.

Extra power allows for more than just improved graphics. Better draw distances, more advanced A.I., improved physics. It's all tied to the power, but we are still going to be hitting a cost bottle neck at some point.

The only way to push passed that bottlneck is to increase the price of games, but everytime you do so, you potentially sell less games.

Graphics at the moment are fine but what I would like to see is an improvement in physics. Once they have been improved, the graphics can then go on and improve because by that time the tech will be slightly more advanced. As for you statement about next gen, a new generation doesn't always mean vastly superior graphics, most of the time it's to do with innovation and such as the Wii U.

I think it's because there's practically no incentive to make high-budget PC exclusives.

Have we reached the graphical peak? No. Do we need to? No.

The Best looking console games today are still impressing, and they still look great.

I would love for next gen consoles to come out and have the traditional generational leap in graphics, but we really don't need that. Hell, if all the next gen consoles had were current gen graphics with 1080p I'd be happy.

We'll just have to see how powerful the next gen consoles are.

This isnt anything new, people do the same mistakes overagain, because they have the same way of thinking as before.

I think graphics can always be improved but It just isn't as important as it used to be. It's noot like ps1 n64 games where you couldn't tell the differnce between a tree and a bush.
